I love this. The editing is a bit annoying with all the close ups of them pulling faces, but I do enjoy seeing chefs actually cooking. And their terrified looks at the prospect of Marcus Wareing Grin. This is not the effect he has on me Wink.

Just me then!

I love it too! Although there's always a stock phrase which all the judges use which ends up irritating after a few episodes, like 'but is it Olympian enough?' a couple of years ago. I think 'but is this suitable for heroes?' Is starting to grate already.

typedup · 10/04/2014 08:18

Yes I know. And why don't they do their homework and watch a few old ones - they would then know that Pru doesn't really want to see another foam or suchlike.

I'm just catching up on last weeks. Up to Friday now!

LIZS · 16/04/2014 19:01

Disappointing showing so far this week .

TheWave · 16/04/2014 20:45

I like watching several after another on catch up as they are otherwise so short and I can't concentrate on the food or the personalities.

Anyone else think the judges are quite mean this year so far? I suppose they often have been in the past too.

I'm also wary of the editing and the labelling of the characters: that's the new one we think is too big for his boots, that's the one doing too many techniques etc.

typedup · 19/04/2014 10:32

Can't see anyone beating the main course from this week, not unless he totally cocks up the cooking of it.

OP posts:
LIZS · 19/04/2014 11:21

Not technically although veal isn't to everyone's taste.

Davros · 20/04/2014 00:22

I don't like the formulaic way the judge asks the chefs questions E.G. "Did you want it to be that runny?" "Do you think it fits the brief?" Etc. they nearly always say it's what they intended, sometimes with a little attempt to pre-empt criticisms. I wish the judge would try some other method to discuss the dish without giving too much away

LIZS · 20/04/2014 11:38

agree, much too scripted. The feedback is always "this was great , loved the x BUT.... [pause] ... "

StepfauxWife · 21/04/2014 21:02

This is prob my favourite cooking show but agree about the feedback being scripted. Also the fake drama is a little unnecessary.

But great to see some lovely food being cooked without Greg Potato Head Wallace getting involved.

SingaSong12 · 21/04/2014 22:57

I watch on iplayer so can fast forward through repetition. Don't feel it's fair that the judges on the last day see the initial scores from the other days. If you've got I in your head that this dish is only a 4 or a brilliant 9 wouldn't that influence your judgment?

Davros · 22/04/2014 19:09

I agree they didn't used to see the scores and I think they didn't even know who cooked what. Much better

typedup · 26/04/2014 08:14

Really pleased for Emily this week. She was properly shocked - and good to see a turnaround in the scores from Sat to the judges.

LIZS · 26/04/2014 12:03

You're right Davros . The judges were given a blind tasting and only found out which dishes were part of whose menu at the end, although in fairness sometimes it was clear which dish was supposed to follow which and style often gave it away. I think what is missing this time is any sense of regionality, championing local produce. Dominic attempted this in selecting his fish and seafood form the English Channel but got no credit for it. Furthest the South West chefs came from was Bristol too Hmm

StepfauxWife · 29/04/2014 19:54

Eek scary Marcus this week! Daniel Clifford's protégé looks like Homer Simpson to me.

Raahh · 29/04/2014 21:23

I love this programme. It's real easy watching. And I'm glad this year there is a decent 'theme'- last year's (something about Comic relief i think) was rubbish. Food is food- it's not funny, then all the chefs were moaned at for using too many gimmicksGrinAnd was it last year someone had a model of the titanic? Yep- that's funny....HmmGrin

Anyway- agree the feedback is very scripted- I wait for the 'but....'.

I was delighted for Emily too- I don't think Sat Bains liked her much, his opinion of her food was almost the opposite of the final judging. But he had to put he through to the end- what with the other bloke using half a dish of shop bought stuff.

All the dishes are getting a bit 'samey' though- lots of hp flasks and rabbitGrin

I do not like Marcus. He always looks so smug (and was a very bad loser when his own dishes were judged harshly).

Raahh · 29/04/2014 21:24

hip not hp!

Raia · 29/04/2014 23:24

I love this show too: it makes masterchef look like a right load of old crap Grin

Agree, this year's theme is great although yeah, lots of the chefs are coming up with similar ideas so there's quite a lot of repetition.

I do wish they'd show us all of the judges' scores on a Friday though.

Raahh · 30/04/2014 18:13

I preferred the judges scores on the Friday, and the judges not knowing (allegedly) who cooked what. I'm sure they are familiar enough with the styles of the judges by now to guess who has done what though.

Favourite main course ever on this programme was the Stargazy Pie made by Mark Hix. It might even have been the first series. Not something I would ever eat but it looked amazing, and very banquet-worthy.

Auntimatter · 30/04/2014 18:17

I hate this year's theme: really tasteless. Many people were killed on D-Day and in the following days.

And I'm bored of the VoiceOver and the fact that each chef has a single adjective applied to them.

I have deleted my recordings and cancelled the series record.

Coulsonlives · 03/05/2014 07:54

Spot on Raah

Never convinced on themes. Last years really highlighted who didn't get humour!

typedup · 03/05/2014 10:29

Quite pleased that Aktar won this week just because I thought Mark's dishes were really dull. But being late is really rude and unfair on other people.

OP posts:
Raahh · 03/05/2014 10:29

ooh- intriguingGrin

I'm getting fed up with them all doing 'dig for victory' Grin

And the whole 'telling a story' malarkey. It's a plate of meat and veg, not Charles Dickens!

Dragon

I am bemused as to why we still have a dragon.

Skiingmaniac · 03/05/2014 10:37

Marcus Wareing.....yes please! Wink
