tiredsadmum did you watch the last series? I'm wondering if you've misjudged what it's supposed to be about. The premise that the Observer are paying for it all is part of the joke.

It's less of a focus on the places they visit and more a satirical, narcissistic, exaggerated version of Coogan and Brydon (although I agree with many up thread that there seem to be some true to life aspects for Coogan at least if you read the stories about him!).

I bloody love it - spat my drink out at the 'gait' comment! Grin

No, I didn't see the 1st series. I saw this advertised as a trip to Italy, reviewing whatever and thought great, so tuned in. Great countryside ruined by the chat, lovely food but no commentary so after the 1st episode I was really cross. So imo it was misadvertised. I didn't mind the idea of UK comedians rather than Italians - I felt that was just a different angle and could have worked very well. I don't remember the Observer being mentioned, but somebody was funding the trip and I didn't think it was OK that the BBC should. What was interesting was that I then (wasted more time) and went off and googled. The newspaper reviewers generally felt that the director was after a holiday in Italy. They all raved about the 1st series but felt that this was not as good. But for someone like me, tuning in cold, it was very disappointing.

It isn't a review programme at all, it's all about Rob and Steve's relationship and "rivalry". I think it's bloody hilarious and don't have a problem with them being in Italy at all

LittleBearPad · 21/04/2014 00:18

You know it's a comedy programme now Tired. It's not a documentary? Did you really think Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan were food experts?

Although some correspondents have similarly complained to the Times Culture section - very funny.

Love this, it's the only enjoyable thing on TV ATM. Really enjoyed ep2 with Brydon charming the socks off the pretty girl on the boat. The 'gait' comment was brilliant!

And the scenery

Actually I don't agree ( with myself as much as anyone) about the review aspect of the show. They show you every place and tell you the names, they show you the food and their reaction to it and you get to hear Byron etc in Roger Moore's voice. Excellent! I don't need a tosser who owns an apron telling me what to think (Rick Stein, I'm looking at you!)
P.s. I never thought I'd ever use the words "Byron etc"!

I love it, funny and beautiful scenery as well!!

Tired. its a comedy show.

tiredandsadmum · 22/04/2014 22:28

Thank you all :) - I now get that it is a comedy show. Just wish the BBC had advertised it as such!

I am now off to watch the 3 episodes of Italy Unpacked with Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli. 1st episode Le Cinque Terre! Fabulous!
