Really Tunip?? I was traumatised by those chapters!

Do you remember which book/where they came, Logg1e? I'm seriously wondering if I missed a bit.

Just the latest one I think, isn't it? Dance with Dragons?

He tortures him until Theon begs him to cut off the afflicted digits.

Oh God, and that other thing that Ramsay makes him do.

I'm going to have nightmares tonight.

Oh, that explains it then - I haven't got to Dance With Dragons yet.
They've shifted the order of a few things round from the books to the tv series and that must be one that happens earlier on screen.
I'm currently on the book with no Tyrion in (sob. weep. wail.) but I'm assuming they'll put his book 5 stuff into this series fairly early on.
I think GRRM rearranged quite a few things when he was writing it anyway. I'm fascinated by what his process of composition was for something so vast - if anyone knows any articles or interviews that throw any light I'd love to read them.

Me too, I am fascinated by the process of taking a plot idea and then giving it lots of twists and turns and body. I do know that he has it all planned out, and he's shared the remaining plot with the TV show. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't complete the book series. His life must be pretty busy and exciting (and distracting). Also, there's some great foreshadowing throughout the books.

I hope that some of the prophecies don't come to pass in any shape or form.

The foreshadowing is AMAZING. It's so rich. When I've finished the 5 books I'm going straight back to the beginning again. There must be loads of stuff you miss the first time round because you're just trying to keep the multiple characters straight in your head.

The tv version does it in its own way too, eg in his first few scenes the camera lingers on Jaime's right hand!
The first time I read it I found Jaime quite dull but he becomes so much more interesting when you know what's going to happen to him.

AIBU to wish I lived in Westeros so I could throw on one of these every morning?

Just, oooh. Pretty.

Amazing the detail that has gone into this programme.

foreshadowing
Prophecies are one element but there's so much more. So many casual comments or turns of phrase that turn out to be loaded with meaning....
TV can do visual foreshadowing too, like the camera lingering on Jaime's right hand in the early scenes.

Cersei's embroidery in Tulip's link is stunning. I also love the way Sansa's gowns are cut - more couture than medieval but so beautiful.

The costume department on GoT is amazing. In fact, the whole production is amazing. My one teeny tiny regret about having been on set is that it spoils the magic of watching it on TV a bit.

On set? On set! Do tell. [exploding with envy emoticon]

Apologies to anyone who's endured this tale before the hundreds of times I might have mentioned it but since you asked worried... My DD is one of the babies that featured in season 3 as Gilly's baby. Hence we were on set for several days.

Oh wow. Amazing. Must have been fascinating. Would LOVE to see it in production (trying to think of most likely route in but does not seem to be much call for middle aged ample mothers). Just got into GOT in last 4 weeks and have been totally hooked with it. Just the size and organisation of it all is incredible.

This is a good website for GoT. You can get character and plot synopses without spoilers from further on in the series than you have watched. (use the "scope" function to do this"). It is based on the books but the TV series has largely stayed true to the plot of the books.

worried, it was fascinating to see get a glimpse of how it's made. One of the scenes we were on set for was a snow scene....filmed in August (on a really shitty wet day). Even I was taken aback by how realistic it looked when I saw the final product on screen.

We also got to spend a day at Castle Black which was really interesting. Technically, I have been on top of the wall since our 'holding' area was above the Castle Black set but obviously there is no actual 700ft wall of ice hiding in the Northern Irish countryside.

OK...so just joined. Hello everyone and couldn't resist the telly addicts forum. So just finished Breaking Bad and wife and I are desperate to find another series for us and everywhere I look and everyone recommends Game of Thrones. So could someone give me a quick summary and if it's true what everyone is saying. Hard to beat Breaking Bad IMHO!

Report
Vivacia · 14/04/2014 11:37

I'll give you a quick summary:

It's a very involved story with many, many characters, locations, religions etc. I advise you to start from the beginning of the tv series, read the books afterwards and if you must choose a favourite character, you'll need about 10.
