DANCE MOMS

Would love to know if anyone is watching Dance moms and what you think of Abby terrorising kids?

Dd and I are addicted to Dance Moms. We save up the episodes during the week and have a binge at the weekends.

Dd loves the dancing. I love the bitching!!

It's obviously all pretty manufactured and unrealistic. I mean how many dancers would learn completely new competitive routines every single week. And so many things (like the pyramid, and random new mothers/ dancers being introduced at regular intervals) are obviously things thrown in by the producers to artificially create conflict.

But Abby makes it. She's a fabulous character to watch, wonderful and monstrous at the same time. Although at the start of 3 I found it almost unwatchable as she became genuinely cruel towards the girls (refusing to call Chloe by her name was particularly pathetic) and all because their mothers had annoyed her!

frogmore6 · 27/03/2014 20:06

In the US being on Broadway is about privilege NOT money and parents do not really care for that at all. I know, I'm American.

Love it. The catchphrase in our house these days is.....
"Goood jooooob girrrrrlss!!!!" Said in a loud screechy voice.

TheProsAndConsOfHitchhiking · 27/03/2014 21:08

The phrase dd and I love to use is 'Everyones replaceable' Grin

heronsfly · 27/03/2014 21:43

I agree about Asia, she seems too old for her years 'save your tears for your pillow' is one of our favorites and singing the theme tune Grin

badasahatter · 27/03/2014 21:56

Abby drives me nuts. I love Chloe. I quite like her mum too. She's trappy, but I quite like that. Melissa drives me nuts and Maddy would appeal to me more if she wasn't favoured so heavily by Abby. The injustice drives me nuts. I agree that Holly is the most balanced mom there and the one mum I'd aspire to be like as a dance mom. Nia has come on so beautifully since she first started. She's like a butterfly coming out of a chrysalis.

Dinosaursareextinct · 28/03/2014 10:21

Did you see Asia on the Korean tv programme, dancing with a little Korean boy? It was very sexual. Her mum seems quite happy for her to do this kind of thing. I do think she is v talented though, and incredibly self confident.

frogmore6 · 28/03/2014 20:07

badasahatter: Every single thing you've said echoes my sentiments EXACTLY!!!

Asia's dance style seems far too adult for me too, DameDiazepam - it's like watching the worst of Miley Cyrus, in an 8 year old!

Abby enrages me sometimes, the way she talks to the dancers and their mothers - she is a bully, imo. She takes out her frustrations with the mums on their children, and tries to drive a wedge between the girls and their mums - it's horrific to watch sometimes. I thought it was very telling indeed that when the Dance magazine came to do a day in the life of Maddy, Abby was totally different in class to the way she is usually - she knows how badly that would play, in the dance press - and yet she is happy to behave like that for the cameras - baffling. I suppose it has boosted her own profile and media career, and if she breaks a child or two in the process, doesn't care. The bit about refusing to call Chloe by her name, that SisterChristina mentioned - that was particularly dreadful.

I assume that the parents pay not only for the dance tuition, but I assume they must have to pay for the travel and the competition entry costs too - though it seems as if Abby supplies the costumes (and some of them cost amazing amounts of money - hundreds of dollars!).

Cathy does seem nicer, on the surface, than Abby, but the way she behaves at competitions - and the way she lets her dance parents behave - is atrocious - and that puts me firmly on ALDC's side in every competition. I do admire Abby for the way she has built a dance troupe of elite child dancers from her own students, and has won their loyalty to the group, whereas Cathy is having to get her dancers from other studios and groups, and is ruthlessly poaching and discarding dancers, just to build a troupe that will beat Abby.

I think the pyramid is dreadful - it could be so damaging for the girls' self confidence and feelings - but apparently it was all the idea of the programme's producers - Abby didn't do anything like that before the programme started filming.

IneedAwittierNickname · 29/03/2014 12:17

Totally addictive tv.
Abbey reminds me of my old ballet teacher, only we never had the pyramid!
In the early episodes.I think maddie was the best dancer, byt now I think Chloe is equal (they have different strengths IMO)
I.don't like Asia, well I don't like her dance style. Far too adult!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/03/2014 12:05

Abby is like a bigger version of that Dance teacher from Fame Grin

consideringadoption84 · 30/03/2014 20:01

I'm totally addicted too. I watch it on the internet so I'm right up to date with where it is in the US (half way through season 4 I think).

It is getting more and more ridiculously sensationalised and biased though.

Dinosaursareextinct · 31/03/2014 11:40

Abby is successful because she is clearly extremely good at what she does - producing vast amounts of choreography as well as teaching the girls to dance it. Very creative. And I love that she is so self-confident and professionally successful, despite apparently having a number of personal "issues". Eg the stuffed dog episode...

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 31/03/2014 12:06

DD (who is an adult now) went to a very competitive dance studio when she was younger (in the states). They did lots of competitions and lots of different routines (and costumes $$$) for lots of different dancing styles (jazz, ballet, tap, music theatre, lyrical, and so on) with solos, small groups, larger groups, and production numbers. She was literally there every afternoon and evening after school for hours practicing. But it was her choice - the more she danced, the happier she was.

We spent a week in Vegas every year at the nationals as well, which was always fun. Grin She has loads of good memories and loved it completely. She was lucky in that the studio she went to had good teachers and an owner that made sure the kids weren't pressured or pushed to do anything inappropriate.

Some of the parents were quite pushy, but the studio tended to put their foot down on some of that type of behaviour, thank goodness. We often saw other studios that displayed some scary behaviour at competitions - very "in your face" by their teacher, dancers, and parents. I can't imagine that type of environment was nice to be in at all.

I do think that, to some extent, while there is some truth in these programmes, it's all edited and pushed to be extreme - if it's not, who would watch, right?

leeloo1 · 01/04/2014 14:01

I've become addicted to this show too. Does anyone else think that Vivi-Anne really hates dancing... from her mum (crab-Apple-Cathy) pushing her to join & compete with ALDC, to her being with CA, to her mum asking if she wants to be the guest dancer with the new boys group ('no'), to her helping 'audition' dancers for her mum's new troupe ('so what do you think Vivi?' 'I'm hungry.') to her sitting with her mum watching the ALDC/CA perform (they're always seated behind Abby et al, must be a small auditorium! Grin) with a completely expressionless face - it just looks to me like she is bored by the whole thing! :)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/04/2014 14:14

Poor little Vivi,I feel do sorry for herSad of all the families she could've ended up with she gets a dance teacher as a mother when she clearly has not interest or ability, poor wee sausageSad

This had passed me by until last week when Mia Diaz came to do a workshop at dds dance school. I watched a couple of episodes online so I would know who she was! Have to say it's not my cup of tea but Mia was absolutely lovely Smile

consideringadoption84 · 05/04/2014 11:21

Is this on in the UK now then? Everything you're all talking about happened a couple of years ago?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/04/2014 12:11

It's on one of the channels that is lots of repeats, I think. But I am not too bothered, as this means there's lots of Dance Moms for me still to watch!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/04/2014 12:47

Who it's Mia Diaz?

I'm so sad it's finished, anyone know when it'll be back on?

HoldOnHoldOnSoldier · 05/04/2014 14:43

I have just googled Mia Diaz. There is a Dance Moms Miami! Shock

heronsfly · 07/04/2014 16:50

Im a few years back too, I have watched a few clips on you tube for the new series and cant believe how grown up they all are, but I agree with Genius, all the more for me to watch Grin
