Just started, like a really disturbing MN thread.

OP posts:

Haha! No - I was part of the true events however.

Forago · 02/04/2014 09:45

Hmmmm I found Reece shearsmiths acting to be really wooden and his portrayal quite unconvincing. The drama as a whole was interesting though and did make me look up the case. Agree about the picture oc Ckiare at the end, nice touch to remind you this wasn't just some wooden ITV drama, poor lady, and her family.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 09:54

I don't really know what "wooden" acting means. I thought he was very quiet and still - and that unassuming nature fitted Malcolm. He was a controlling monster. I thought he did a great job - as did Felicity and Simone. His self justification was compelling and very real to me.

GemmaTeller · 02/04/2014 10:16

^ Grin

GemmaTeller · 02/04/2014 10:18

that was aimed at bumpotato

I think the last episode should have been two, it would have been good to see how he him in court and his reasoning of events

2rebecca · 02/04/2014 10:40

I think they didn't develop his personality enough to show what all these women saw in him. We maybe needed to see him when he first met Felicity in whatever hot country it was before he started trying to bump her off to develop a picture of him as a charmer rather than a creep. Simone just seemed to go for wet, needy men as her previous bloke was portrayed as wet and whingy and she got more interested in Malcolm when he decided to play ill and needy as confident career bloke wasn't working..

wellthatsdoneit · 02/04/2014 10:47

I thought the first episode where he was talking to Claire the first time he drugged her gave the most insight into his character - justifying to her (himself) why he was doing what he was doing. It gave me the shivers. The rest of it was too fast and shallow.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 10:56

Well it's a balance isn't it. Of course you could have the years of trust and the "happy times". But that isn't the interesting part of the drama. With the first two wives the story started at the wedding. With Simone, it charted the "wooing" from when he first met her. So the writers would argue they did show that. The scenes with her undergoing IVF would have been heartfelt if you hadn't known it was entirely based on lies. Someone's ex was only portrayed in the scenes where he was uncomfortable with her moving an apparently "sick" man into their house.

GingerRodgers · 02/04/2014 11:05

I saw an interview with Claire's brother and he was 'happy' with the itv production (by happy I mean he thought it was well played and portrayed). Maybe a lot of people here can't relate to the characters because they know the plot line? They have seen the characters in other roles which sometimes doesn't help.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 11:38

Possibly. I think people on here have mistaken their hatred of the character Shearsmith was playing, for Shearsmith being bad at playing him. When actually, it's probably a compliment !

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 11:47

Yeah, Heat and Closer, well known for their reviews Grin

I think a proper documentary would have been better, I had never heard of him before, a really good meaty doc exploring all the horrific events would have been better and far more interesting.

No I'm not mistaking my hatred for the Malcom, I thought he was miscast and hammy. Such a shame as I think it would have been ok otherwise. I have never seen the actor in anything else.

YY I agree about An Appropriate Adult, goodness I am still recovering from that, no THAT was chilling and brilliantly portrayed.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 11:53

Haha! Selecting your choice of magazines to somehow make a point! Well we disagree about the casting.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 11:55

They were your choice Confused

Oh well, it's fine, you thought it was good,I thought it was crap, it's allowed :)

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 12:01

Quite!

wintera · 02/04/2014 12:43

See I disagree about Appropriate adult, I thought it was quite comical when it was on. Plus it bugged me the way they kept repeating 'appropriate adult ' all the way through it. Yeah Ok we get the message, she's his appropriate adult! Grrr...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 13:07

I think that was the whole point though, wasn't it, that he kept repeating it as he knew it would slow down the investigation?

Lottapianos · 02/04/2014 13:08

I didn't sleep properly for 2 nights after watching Appropriate Adult. It was one of those programs that just gets under your skin and chills you to the bone. And i absolutely love Dominic West and think he's dreamy, so to see him play such a monster and to do it so convincingly just added an extra layer of creep.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 13:10

Yes - and Dominic West looked like he was wearing a Halloween version of a Fred West outfit! And a very unsympathetic and quite creepy depiction from Emily Watson of a woman who was clearly just a little bit obsessed with him. Each to his own!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 13:15

Well yes, she was obsessed with him, they portrayed that well.

FW looked like he was wearing a Halloween costume in RL even when he wasn't to be fair.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 13:19

Haha! True!

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 13:22

Shearsmith and West are good friends. I saw them in "As You Like It" in the West End - Both excellent. Not a whiff of murder in sight.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 13:29

Presumably that's Dominic and not Fred? Wink

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 13:33

One or the other. Not sure Fred had an equity card.

Lottapianos · 02/04/2014 13:35

'Yes - and Dominic West looked like he was wearing a Halloween version of a Fred West outfit!'

The thought of a Fred West outfit makes me want to scream! That really would be the scariest thing ever Shock

crashbangboom · 02/04/2014 13:37

Starting watching on catch up today....episode 2/3.

Oddly Making me feel better
