Just started, like a really disturbing MN thread.

OP posts:
wellthatsdoneit · 01/04/2014 13:25

Yes too many unanswered questions and not enough exploration into his character. I wanted to know where he'd been in the year after he left Simone - he looked pretty haggard.

Lottapianos · 01/04/2014 13:33

I thought it was utter cack too. Amazing story but so badly told. The last episode was the worst of the three - awful script and the acting was completely dreadful. Lots of long pauses and staring into the distance Hmm

I love the League of Gentlemen and I love Reece Shearsmith in it but thought he was really not good in this. And totally agree that he just looked weird and creepy, not in any way like a desirable bloke that would have women queuing up.

'I wanted to know where he'd been in the year after he left Simone - he looked pretty haggard.'
Me too!

BumPotato · 01/04/2014 13:54

None of the stuff I know about was included. Boo.

Nice touch with the lovely, happy photo of Claire at the end.

Lottapianos · 01/04/2014 13:56

BOF, I've just read your link - what a deeply chilling story. Felicity was so lucky that her parents were as on the ball as they were.

Groovee · 01/04/2014 17:16

Felt a wee bit sad that it didn't delve in as deep. They could have extended it to more episodes.

guineapiglet · 01/04/2014 17:17

it could have been so much better as was a deeply compelling tragic sequence of events and the last 20 mins were really rushed... where did he go and how did they finally nail him? Simone and Felicity clearly had very narrow escapes and it was a moving touch to credit Claire at the end...why are these deeply involved dramas so hurried?

Carioca44 · 01/04/2014 19:21

Wow - what utter rubbish. Shearsmith has been universally lauded for this performance - utterly plausible and perfect on the role. The events are very accurate - of course they are truncated for drama. But I can tell you - because I know, it is a very good depiction of the events. It may be hard to stomach, but these women were strong women, duped over years of deceit. Ludicrous to say it was hammy acting etc. Quite childish comments too.

Also - it is not the case that Webster was a beautiful looking lothario - (that would be even more unbelievable) he was kind and gentlemanly. Don't reduce it to obvious melodrama. Webster was far more insidious than that.

wintera · 01/04/2014 20:12

By far the best thing they did was put a pic of the real Claire at the end. I was actually very moved by that.

Carioca44 · 01/04/2014 20:40

It was very sensitively done. Such a depressing story. So many lives hurt by this monster.

ParkingFred · 01/04/2014 20:44

I thought it was very, very well done. Have never come across Reece Shearsmith before, but I thought he played the part very convincingly.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 01/04/2014 21:08

I haven't watched the final episode but think Reece played it very well. So used to seeing him in half horror / half comic roles this was a real change.

hollyisalovelyname · 01/04/2014 21:23

I thought Malcolm came across as very creepy. Not the type of man who could dupe women easily. Therefore I stand by my comment that it was bad casting.

Carioca44 · 01/04/2014 21:56

Easy to see him as creepy when you know from the start he is a murderer. I don't think he was creepy in the scenes when he is being caring and sensitive to the wives. In fact the scenes with Simone and the IVF were heart breaking. Yes - of course he is horrible when he's just drugged them. So I think you are incorrect. And every review of his portrayal had said it was BAFTA worthy. I agree.

Cocolepew · 01/04/2014 22:39

He came across as pathetic and needy, like a petulant child. I still can't see why anyone, would fall for him (in the series not RL)

BumPotato · 01/04/2014 22:49

Someone I know had a relationship with a con artist. He was a fat, ugly blurt with little in the way of personality. He duped some of his victims (mainly independently wealthy women of a certain age) out of hundreds of thousands of pounds. He was eventually jailed. If you met him, and I did, you would never think he'd get one girlfriend, ever, never mind 7 or 8 who all handed vast sums over to him. If he played himself in a film of his life, you'd not find him believeable.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 08:11

Well there you go.

2rebecca · 02/04/2014 08:55

I saw the caring and sensitive as controlling. I think some women enjoy being fussed over and I'm not one of them. I'm curious about his college job. He was a lecturer but what happened to that when he preetended to have chemo? He won't have had sick lines so did he just pack it in?
I presume once he had a police record it was harder for him to get prestigious jobs so that would be why he looked a mess a year later.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/04/2014 08:58

BAFTA worthy? It was yet another example of how Itv can't do dramas. They mess it up every single time either by stringing the story out over 2 or 3 nights unnecessarily or totally mis casting actors. It's got to the point where if I see it's on Itv my heart sinks. This should have been excellent, it had a great cast and a fantastic, interesting story but Malcolm was ridiculous in it.

Rant overGrin

Lottapianos · 02/04/2014 09:05

Totally agree about ITV dramas Dame. The only decent thing I've seen on ITV was Appropriate Adult, which was one of the most disturbing programs I've ever seen, and brillliantly done.

I'm a big Reece Shearsmith fan but really thought he was awful in this, not helped by a dreadful cheesy script.

Carioca44 · 02/04/2014 09:27

“Reece Shearsmith gives a superbly horrible performance as Webster, managing to make this dull little spendthrift seem both ordinary and creepy, while Sheridan Smith does a typically accomplished job of playing the wife who can’t figure out why she always feels so awful. It was – and this is meant as a compliment- a considerable relief when the episode ended.”

The Guardian G2, 17th March – Julia Raeside
“Shearsmith is so good at psychopathy, giving the character a truly sinister stillness, portraying him as a controlling, stone-cold automaton…If someone had made this up, it would be judged far-fetched and unlikely to have gone on so long (13 years). Absolutely stranger than fiction.”

The Guardian Guide, 29th March

Just in the interest of balance.

BumPotato · 02/04/2014 09:39

Are you Reece's mum Carioca?

BumPotato · 02/04/2014 09:39

Only joking Grin

He managed to creep me out, playing Malcolm.
