Just started, like a really disturbing MN thread.

OP posts:
ProfYaffle · 19/03/2014 14:08

I agree re Reece Shearsmith, he's good at whiny and downright weird but not good as a supposedly charming yet menacing character. I noticed we only ever saw him being erudite and funny in the distance with other wedding guests, no actual evidence of it for the viewer.

And his hair was a few decades too young for his face.

fussychica · 19/03/2014 16:14

Didn't really like the way this was done, particularly wizzing back & forth to New Zealand. Where was he getting his drug supply once he left nursing (and isn't all that carefully monitored anyway?) Didn't like the casting or the way the story was told. Won't bother with the other two episodes.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 20/03/2014 09:32

Well he obviously did manage to continue getting the drugs, because it is a true story.

Cocolepew · 20/03/2014 12:46

I presumed the drugs were prescribed to him.

BumPotato · 20/03/2014 16:46

I watched. I'm from the area and spoke to someone who was heavily involved in the case. Some of the background to this story, the investigation and how it came to be reopened is fascinating stuff, I hope it is covered in the next two episodes.

The acting is ham, I agree, but I'll watch the next two, for the local interest alone.

fussychica · 21/03/2014 09:33

Yes I realise he got hold of the drugs as it's true but it was never explained how he got that many after leaving the NHS (where he appeared to have nicked them). Assumed prescribed but not mentioned.

Drquin · 21/03/2014 09:42

Watching for local interest as much as anything despite lack of local accents

The true story fascinated me - firstly because it was so local, and these things only ever happen SomewhereElse and because it all seemed to be tragically "normal" at first glance.

Bue · 22/03/2014 09:36

I thought this was quite gripping. So eerie that I've been thinking about it on and off all week. Looking forward to the next one.

Agree though that the main character does not have the charm factor. As he is not what you would call conventionally attractive, surely he would have to be charming and magnetic to bag these wives? And I'm not seeing any evidence of that. With the Kiwi one in particular, all I can think is, she is way out of his league! This makes no sense!

BumPotato · 22/03/2014 10:17

The real Malcolm Webster is far uglier...can't speak for how charming he was.

NotQuitePerfect · 24/03/2014 08:41

Can't wait for tonight's episode. Gripping stuff, quite chilling.

angelos02 · 24/03/2014 12:35

I don't think Reece is bad looking in real life. He's had a hell of a make-under. He was always known as the good looking one in the League of Gentlemen. Although that's not saying much!

KurriKurri · 24/03/2014 13:32

I think Reece Shearsmith is attractive, and I am quite enjoying this - I think he is chilling and weird, -looking forward to tonights episode (feel bad saying that as it is based on a true story and obviously very horrific and tragic for the families of those poor women, but I just mean it is gripping.)

Groovee · 24/03/2014 17:10

Finally got a chance to catch up this morning. Quite chilling and had me freaked out in some parts. I saw the coverage of the court case and it chilled me then. Those poor women.

starrynight19 · 24/03/2014 20:38

I liked it last week. Was shocked to see it was a true story. Looking forward to tonights.

Sleepyhoglet · 24/03/2014 21:10

Creepy

BumPotato · 24/03/2014 21:24

Oh hello Kalinda!

AnneEyhtMeyer · 24/03/2014 21:51

Incredible the difference just shaving your head and eyebrows makes.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 24/03/2014 21:52

I can't believe this actually happened. So chilling .

AnneEyhtMeyer · 24/03/2014 21:54

It is amazing, isn't it?

TheGirlFromIpanema · 24/03/2014 22:32

I came on to mention Kalinda too Bum but I'm an hour behind!

BumPotato · 24/03/2014 22:53

I did hear that the then Grampian Police had a lot of bother reopening the case. This was thought to be partially due to the original investigating officers being more senior in the force 10 years after Claire's death. They didn't want to be seen as inept. Certainly the new officers investigating became incredibly unpopular within their own force. Allegedly.

Davros · 24/03/2014 23:49

Does shaving your head look the same as when it's fallen out? I suppose he could say it was just starting to grow back but then he must have been away having "treatment" for some time. There was an article in the RT last week with photos of the real Malcolm and Claire, he was not attractive

AnyFucker · 24/03/2014 23:53

No, shaving does not look the same as chemotherapy-induced hair loss.

BumPotato · 24/03/2014 23:58

I don't suppose MW's peers at the time were thinking he was faking it. It is a reasonably common scam, faking cancer Sad
