Starting the thread in antcipation!

OP posts:
LondonMother · 12/01/2014 22:25

No, Moriarty doesn't come back in the books. Dead means dead in Conan Doyle!

Clawdy · 12/01/2014 22:26

It was brilliant. And Moriarty is back, fantastic ending. Can't wait for next series.

Nerfmother · 12/01/2014 22:28

London mother. No need for your snidey little comment really was there? There's enough of that on mumsnet. If me disliking it annoys you perhaps you could just ignore my posts? So far, the threads have been pleasant with room for all comments.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2014 22:29

So do we need to read the books to go "Ooooo I like how they adapted that?" and not think its bollocks?

Valiant1 · 12/01/2014 22:29

classic mofat move, kills them off brings them backSad did the same with the darleaks

Hassled · 12/01/2014 22:33

BOF - I yearn to hold Sherlock Holmes' pipe. So jealous.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 12/01/2014 22:35

BOF!!! GrinGrin

I actually LOL'd.

Good on you for having a clutch of Basil Rathbone's pipe.

Hassled · 12/01/2014 22:35

RedToothBrush - there's a reason the books are still loved and read and adapted for telly. They're just really, really good. My memory is too shit to get all of the references in the TV series but when I do spot one it always makes me smile.

Punkatheart · 12/01/2014 22:37

But dead doesn't mean dead in Doyle. He brought Sherlock back, after all.

I wasn't as keen on this one - it was a little too luvvie, even for me.

The Cumberpatch pipe. Oo-er.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/01/2014 22:38

That was great, really gripping.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 12/01/2014 22:40

Londonmother, in the books it like Sherlock's dead in the Reichenbach Falls, but then Conan-Doyle brought him back for another series. There was such an outcry that he had to, apparently. So even in the books, dead doesn't always mean dead.

It's a modern take based on the Sherlock stories... enjoy it, or don't

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/01/2014 22:43

That was an amazing episode, WOW!! And I am so happy Moriarty is back, I like funny crazy villains much better than face licking/flicking fireplace peeing ones Smile

LondonMother · 12/01/2014 22:44

OK, Punk, dead means dead in Conan Doyle except when it's Sherlock Holmes presumed dead!

The other obvious reference this evening was to The Man With The Twisted Lip when Watson goes to an opium den in Limehouse to track down the addict husband of a family friend.

Nerfmother, it would probably have been better if I hadn't posted that, so apologies.

Punkatheart · 12/01/2014 22:44

In fact, there are numerous clever references to Doyle's work. Things were often not what they seemed. Also, Doyle believed in spiritualism so for him, dead was never dead.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2014 22:44

The trouble i have is that if you haven't read the books, then because it seems to be just too referential; they have completely lost sight of the fact that most people watching aren't fan boys and aren't familiar with the books.

A good adaptation stands alone without the need to have read the book.

A brilliant adaptation would be able to please the fans and those who haven't that background knowledge.

Punkatheart · 12/01/2014 22:45

I was just thinking of the intensity of BC's eyes.

I'm sorry - what was everyone saying?

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/01/2014 22:46

Oh... You know what this means? We now spend the break trying to work out how MORIARTY faked his death! Grin

Nerfmother · 12/01/2014 22:47

Thanks London Mother. Much nicer here than in AIBU Grin
Red I'm sure the first series referenced the books in the way you mean, with a balance?

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/01/2014 22:48

RedToothBrush I haven't read any of the Sherlock novels, and have followed everything. Maybe the odd reference passed me by, but I can't think of anything right now.

Choccyjules · 12/01/2014 22:48

Loved the t shirt gags, very nod to the geeks-y!

Moriaty. Really? Head not blown off then? Sighs...not sure how much more we can accept from the writers tbh.

(Twitter thinks he is 'the other one' ie a third brother)

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 12/01/2014 22:48

Red - I haven't read the books. I heard that snippet about the books on radio4.

It stands alone as a great series for me - it's a billion times cleverer than an awful lot of the dross that's normally on. IMO of course.

Punkatheart · 12/01/2014 22:48

That's why they wouldn't tell us how Sherlock did it. They are linked.

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 12/01/2014 22:50

Benedict Cumberbatch has nothing to do with how much I like it. Of course.

LondonMother · 12/01/2014 22:50

Red, I think Steven Moffat has done exactly that. If you have read all the Sherlock Holmes stories several times, as I have, you get a little bit extra out of it, maybe. But he and Mark Gatiss have done a fantastic job of updating to the 21st century and you don't need any prior knowledge of the books to enjoy the series. In my view, anyway.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2014 22:51

Less is more to me.

I think clever is good, but knowing when enough is enough...
