We have all just watched all of it through, as the younger teenagers had to go to bed before the end! all big fans here, have loved the first two series - we all agreed that it was a big improvement after the wedding episode, and back to brilliance with the writing and characterisation. Loved the bit where Molly slapped him round the face telling him about his 'gifts' - secretly hope they will end up together - SHerlock clearly has it in him after his rumble with Janine - I do love Mrs Hudson who pops up with timely surprises, this weeks being she was once an exotic dancer.

We didnt actually see Moriarty at the end, so wonder if this has something to do with Lars, Troels, CAM - can't wait for the next series, but suspect it will be a long wait...... :(

Davros · 13/01/2014 18:37

Although I have loved all of it, I am with THERhubarb on the fashion to "humanise" everything and focus on relationships. It even happens in science programmes, DH moans about it often, the public is perceived not to be able to enjoy or understand anything unless it's brought (down) to their soap opera level.
And so, Robert oiwney Jr anyone?!

hattymattie · 13/01/2014 18:55

I found this episode similar in production style to the new Dr Who's, lots of frantic dialogue and scene shifting. It adds incoherence and confusion and detracts from the storyline. I much preferred the first two series'.

ItsATIARA · 13/01/2014 19:13

Just watched the last two episodes practically back to back and enjoyed the hell out of them. I took a break in the middle to read The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton and that definitely added to the fun.

Currently very much Team Moffat / Gatiss because a) I was terrified they were going to "fridge" Mary, and they stepped away from that trap and b) the BBC4 doco revealed that they share my love for The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, which is one of my favourite movies ever.

The other thing I noticed from the BBC4 show is that whilst they're prepared to give a grudging name check to the Robert Downey Jr films, we clearly Don't Talk About The New York Series Grin. Silent movies which no longer survive, sure; actual contemporary competition, no.

I don't think Sherlock's character is as far removed from the original books as much as some people suggest. Allowing for the change in society since the Victorian period, they just spell it out a bit more.

In the books Sherlock becomes pretty dependant on Watson too. He wants a portrait of him (don't remember which story, sorry) and he completely relies on him for back up and company; they walked arm in arm a lot, for example. The mushy stuff, especially at the wedding, would not have happened when the books were written but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have been understood or felt. Watson's point is to humanise Holmes!

The self analysis and opening up to his emotions: he will have been through counselling etc through his school years and probably in rehab. The vocabulary is in common usage now. People do talk about their feelings more than they used to, so if you want to set it realistically in the modern day you have to allow for that!

And I think Watson is amazing - by far the best Watson I've seen so far. He's just a man of normal intelligence, not a moron, is a man of action who regularly wades into dangerous situations and who feels his role is often to provide physical back-up with a gun. It's nice to see a Watson allowed to be a rounded character! I particularly liked the bit in Baker Street where he was told he was an adrenaline junkie with an addiction to dangerous people and situations Smile

Must catch up with the BBC4 docu - that's funny about them ignoring Elementary itsATIARA Grin

Not that I can talk - i've been ignoring it too but after the disappointment of this series I think I'm ready to give it a go.

Allthingsprettyreturns · 13/01/2014 20:11

Is anyone's fan of the filmThe Young Sherlock Holmes?

Has it been established what substances he was addicted to etc?

Davros · 13/01/2014 20:30

Yes, I love The Young Sherlock Holmes. Don't know how "authentic" the portrayal is thi

Allthingsprettyreturns · 13/01/2014 20:34

Winter kills, please give Elementary a try. It's quite different from Sherlock, but is quite good in it's own right. It's made by the same people who produced House, so if you watched that at all and liked it, you will likely enjoy Elementary.

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 20:36

Ack. The pendant in me has to point out the autocorrect changed its to it's. Not me.

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 20:37

Double ack! It was right, I misread my sentence back. Sigh...

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 20:38

Fuck, there's two I see now. One right, one wrong. This is what one g&t before dinner does to me... Why can't I edit???

THERhubarb · 13/01/2014 20:44

I can't get Elementary, we don't have satellite.

Unless I am hugely mistaken, I don't think there is anywhere in any story where Holmes asked for a portrait of Watson? Are you getting mixed up with Irene Adler vikinglady?

Victorian gentlemen often did walk arm in arm at times, that was the culture at the time although I don't think it's mentioned more than once in the stories. Yes, Holmes is rather dependent on Watson though I agree, Holmes himself said that Watson often provided his inspiration.

Although don't forget that there was a large period when Watson was not living at Baker Street at all. So Holmes was fairly self sufficient and could get by without Watson just nicely.

It's a strong friendship bond they have and to that extent I appreciate that Gatiss and Moffat have kept true to this.

Shame that they have to spoil the rest by throwing in a bit of soap opera.

winterkills · 13/01/2014 20:45

And you said 'pendant' instead of 'pedant' Grin

I never saw House for some reason even though I really like Hugh Laurie but funnily enough when I watched the clip you posted earlier I thought JLM seemed quite like the snippets of House I had seen.

THERhubarb · 13/01/2014 20:45

AndiMac Grin

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 21:18

I'm rolling my eyes at myself here, have no doubt. You can buy the first series of Elementary on Amazon for £24. That's only a pound per episode.

THERhubarb · 13/01/2014 21:30

I'm not that into it tbh, I'm sure it will be on TV sooner or later.

In the meantime I'll just immerse myself into the books and rediscover the real Sherlock Holmes, even if I have to travel back through the fogs of Victorian England to get it.

I bet they knew where to put their apostrophes ... Grin

AndiMac · 13/01/2014 21:34

Zing!

2rebecca · 13/01/2014 21:37

Watson's supposed to be a doctor though, and most doctors are above average intelligent. I can't see Mr Hobbit getting into medical school. He does smiley and affable well enough, but that's about all he does in my view.

boogiewoogie · 13/01/2014 21:43

I can't believe that they are bringing Moriarty back! I actually groaned. Sounds as if they're running out of ideas.

Charles is creepy as hell. Even in the book Sherlock approved of his murder (although not committed by Sherlock).

Poor John at finding out about Mary's deception.

Custardo · 13/01/2014 21:49

"Don't be absurd. I'm not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one."

is this a reference to another brother? Sherrinford?

oooh could it be moriarty? step too far

are there alexander Dumas references - lady de winter?

does that mean that mary was once married to moriarty?

also there are a lot of french references in this last episode or am i seeing things that aren't there

what about dickens take of two cities - references to resurrection?

and what the fuck does A.G.RA mean

and am i right in thinking that were was not a full stop between R and A?

Custardo · 13/01/2014 21:50

(just watched it in i player)

Custardo · 13/01/2014 21:52

and was there a clair de lune reference in the books?

THERhubarb · 13/01/2014 21:53

Custy, some Holmes fans believe that there is another brother. Sherringford, which was the name Doyle was going to give to Sherlock.

Then of course there is Watson's sister.....
