Or am I just an old gimmer with a period drama fetish Wink

Anyone else notice that Edith's beau looks exactly like the guy who jilted her.

I thought the new lady's maid was the one who threw herself at Lord G until the endof the episode. That would be funnier. How could he fire her?

MadBusLady · 23/09/2013 16:11

Can you imagine the Downton AIBUs?

ppeatfruit · 23/09/2013 16:20

Yes Katy the two do look alike and both being a lot older (Edith must go for older chaps) BUT the relationship will end in tears in Germany IMO the bloke is Jewish and if he's a German citizen once the Nazis get to power uh oh Sad

EasyToEatTiger · 23/09/2013 16:22

I got bored. I found it really dull and badly written. I felt sorry for the actors.

alemci · 23/09/2013 16:26

thanks Ria :)

it is quite confusing and I was half watching, half trying to list on ebay.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 16:26

Me too Easy
Mary - is she bored or sad or has crap lines just a crap actor?
Hugh Bonneville - is he pompous or flat or has crap lines just a bad actor?
Elizabeth Mcgovern - I think she's just a bad actor

KatyTheCleaningLady · 23/09/2013 16:33

I can recommend the book To Marry an English Lord if anyone is interested in the era of American heiresses marrying titles. It's full of really fun information, including just why the girls were so attractive to the Brits (beyond their money), why the newly rich had to go to Europe (because the Old Money in the US snubbed them), and what their lives were like after the honeymoon (cold).

EasyToEatTiger · 23/09/2013 16:35

Awful lines all the wayGrin They really were grim and wooden and unwatchable. I don't care what happens next. I really would rather watch news24 or Today in Parliament for better drama and performance. The proverbial drying paint springs to mind.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 16:50

Easy

What happens next will be done and dusted within the space of an episode anyway, like the whole Nanny thing. So there's not build-up, no tension. I couldn't give a toss who the old bloke in the workhouse is. He'll be gone by episode 3 at the latest.

Meh

vivatregina · 23/09/2013 17:03

Yes I thought the whole thing was boring and dead to the point of total snoring oblivion - could barely keep eyes open - it was clunkety clunkety clunk like watching a square wooden wheel. Surely even the Americans would get bored by this load of dross.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 17:05

But wait! The Roaring Twenties are coming! Then there will be the Inexorable Rise of Nazism and Edith will be Caught Up In The Whole Thing!

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 17:05

I will go away soon. The whole thing made me a bit cross Grin

GeorginaWorsley · 23/09/2013 17:06

I refuse to listen to you lot.
I loved it,clunky or not.
So much rubbish reality stuff on tv ,Downton is at least entertaining, for me anyway.
So there.
Grin

squoosh · 23/09/2013 17:06

By the time Nazism comes around the Downton gels will be in their 40's and Lady Violet will be 138.

But still, if Daisy can remain 16 forever I suppose it isn't too much of a leap.

squoosh · 23/09/2013 17:11

Downton has always being missing a big dollop of sex. The love stories are all such limp lettuces.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 17:11

Nah. Hitler started leading in the 20's. She'll meet him, possibly be charmed, realise that he's a bastard, be in mild peril, possibly do a bit of spying, maybe have an affair with a Jewish man, then come home. This will all happen in the space of an hour.

ZZZenagain · 23/09/2013 17:15

if Edith and her newspaper man end up in Germany, wouldn't Edith be in trouble? Isn't her American grandmother or grandfather supposed to be Jewish?

I quite liked it. Mary playing Lady MacBeth or whatever the gaunt, frozen face thing and slow motion speech was. The story with the return of the kissing maid is far-fetched, but then most of it is. She's coming back to make another play for Branson. Didn't it look at the cafe as if her and Rose were grinning at each other and cooking up some plot?

LateBloomer414 · 23/09/2013 17:18

Do we not think Nanny West getting the sack opens the door for a more intriguing character to fill in as the inevitably New Hot Nanny?

Moln · 23/09/2013 17:20

is Edith's chap Jewish?

Chubfuddler · 23/09/2013 17:28

Hitler makes his first minor splash into the news in 1923 which is next year in downton. No doubt for reasons yet to be explained Edith will be in a certain Munich beerkeller.

squoosh · 23/09/2013 17:30

'Met this wonderful artist chap in Germany who's making a bit of a noise in politics, bit angry but frightfully charismatic................................'

RedHelenB · 23/09/2013 17:35

Will Branson rediscover his socialist roots at the same time as Edith gets all Nazi - fied though!!??

diddl · 23/09/2013 17:44

It's such bollocks, isn't it?

Lord G just 6months ago saying to Shrimpie-who is going to lose his estate-than goodness for Matthew & his ideas which have saved us.

And now it's-I'll run it all & do what I wantHmm

And O'Brien really wouldn't have left like that-she was a bitch, but I think would have handed in notice!

Plans could have been brought forward & hence a rush for a lady's maid.

And Edith-well, can you blame her for taking up with Gregson-look what happened to Sybil & Mary!

SirChenjin · 23/09/2013 17:47

It is bollocks - but it's great easy-to-watch-on-a-Sunday-night bollocks Grin

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/09/2013 17:49

I am starting to hate Hugh Bonneville and I used to have a bit of a crush before he was on this. And I think we're meant to like, or at least respect him.

It's hard to see such poor writing come from someone who made Gosford Park, which had such subtlety

And I'm no TV snob - love Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, for instance.
