Accidentally filled up the last thread without realising.

Have the day off today so can sit and watch the tennis scores update.

We still have Tennis Tennis too.

Mama1980 · 10/01/2014 09:52

Thanks for that. Grin Thanks
Not a great draw for rafa though!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/01/2014 10:05

Terrible draw for Rafa. Tomic in the 1st round will be tough. Then potentially has Hewitt in round 4 and Potato in the quarters.

Raahh · 10/01/2014 15:30

Bloody hell! terrible draw for Rafa.

But I have faith-and Tomic can be his own worst enemy, even if he is on home turf. I'm not convinced even the Aussies like himGrin

I think the tournament is Djoko's to lose, though, this year. I can't see Murray really being in the right shape to cause him problems, and if Murray does win, then I will be very Hmm about his very quick recoveryGrin

magimedi · 10/01/2014 22:33

I just don't think that Murray will even make the semis.

El Potato to win!!

JuanPotatoTwo · 11/01/2014 10:27

Oh liking the name change Clay. incidentally, who is Clay Davis? Should i know that?

Yay, our man won! Well, my man then! Don't think Rafa will have much trouble dispatching Tomic if he played like he did today. He looked grumpy as all get out through the prize giving ceremony - barely cracked a smile and said about three words to Pot. The fishbowl-like trophy gave Pot a few manoeuvring difficulties!

Wish Australia wasn't so far ahead of us.

Raahh · 11/01/2014 10:39

yay! Potato!

We need a new thead for Monday Grin

Raahh · 11/01/2014 11:55

mmm-lovely picture of Potato on Facebook.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/01/2014 22:35

Sadly I don't think Andy has a chance. I don't think he's played enough since his op to be physically fit enough. It should give him some time on court to help him get back to fitness though.

Juan Clay Davis is a character from 'The Wire'. Famous or not so famous for catchphrase. (Caution possibly not safe for work or it you have small children around.) No reason you should know him, I just happened to be watching last time I name changed and a surprising number of the other characters were already taken.

Mama1980 · 12/01/2014 08:21

I don't think andy has a chance either, I think it's djokovics' year, he's been playing great and he has the best draw by miles-with the exception of maybe facing wawrinka in the quarters.
Just found the yummy pic of potato Grin
Sure you have all found already but just in case there are Australian open apps for the apple/android good for all scores in one place.

Raahh · 12/01/2014 10:36

I love that Clay Davis clip. I loved 'The Wire'.

I'm getting quite excited about the Aussie open- although I'm unlikely to watch very much. It's nice to have some tennis to focus on. I hope Nadal can annihilate Tomic- or there will be plenty of people ready to write him off. Again.

I have actually started to warm to Djokovic. I am clearly going soft in my old age. Grin

So- in order, I would like to see Nadal win (obvs), but if not -Potato, Federer (so we can see lots of Stefan) or Djok (because he's got becker in his corner. ).

A Fed/Djok match would nearly be a Stefan/Boris 80's rematchGrin

And I always think of the AO as being Edberg's tournament- because it's his serve featured in the logo. Grin

Raahh · 12/01/2014 10:46

I forgot ferrer! i hope he does well.

And Potato is now 3rd in the rankings. Pretty good 12 months he's had!

LetZygonsbeZygons · 12/01/2014 17:49

I thought Clay Davis was either a pun on clay courts and Davis cup Hmm or a pun on Ray Davis of the Kinks! Grin

HQ can we have our ball back please?

and GO ANDY!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/01/2014 22:42

Not long to go now. Schedule here.

Mama1980 · 13/01/2014 10:19

Djokovic safely through, he looked very impressive

Raahh · 13/01/2014 11:25

I'm getting lots of lovely Edberg pictures on my FB news feedGrin. I am very happy for this to continue, so I hope Federer makes the most of what surely must be his last attempt in Australia? (but I've been wrong many times beforeGrin).

Heather and Laura both out though Sad

JuanPotatoTwo · 13/01/2014 14:12

Clay, I don't watch much tv, so don't know what The Wire is. But based on that clip, your man seems like a good'un!

Raah I'm glad you're warming to Djok, I really do think he's a nice bloke (cos, you know, I'm such good friends with him innit!). I bought ds1 his book for Xmas, and since reading it, ds has gone gluten free - and guess what? His really quite severe heartburn (severe enough to warrant prescribed medication, not just Gavescon) has all but disappeared. Did you ever see Edberg live? I did in Wimbledon a couple of times. The first time I remember being totally blown away by the power of his shots - I just hadn't appreciated his strength on tv at all.

So, usual suspects through so far I see. Unfortunately, Gulbis also through. I have total confidence that Nadal will breeze past Tomic . Venus has gone though.

I'm going to steel myself to get up and watch some of the later matches (later in the tournament that is). So frustrating knowing it's all happening and not seeing it. Really glad it's tennis time again!

Raahh · 13/01/2014 16:12

Juan - yes, i am warming to DjokShockGrin That's amazing use about your ds- it's amazing how it is often something quite simple that can cure such a lot of things. I am going to steer clear of ever being pregnant again- that's what caused my heart burnGrin should be easy, i've been sterilised.

Sadly, i didn't see Stefan at Wimbledon- the only year i got to go (94) he'd been knocked out early. But i did see him in 87/88 at the Manchester tournament prior to Wimbledon- when he was young (and i was a besotted teenager) - which was niceGrin

I have absolute belief in Nadal. Tomic, his dad, and the whole circus that surrounds them annoy me.
Hmm about Gulbis, another stroppy one. And Janowic made very heavy work of his win.

I still don't think we are finished with the 'old guard' yet- the supposed up and coming types just aren't making the grade. Apart from Potato- who i keep forgetting is actually pretty young, in comparison to the other top players.

JuanPotatoTwo · 13/01/2014 17:39

I agree with you about the old guard.

I think players like Dimitrov, Tomic, Gulbis, Raonic (boo, hiss!) who were touted as the next best thing, haven't really lived up to the hype. But there are some behind them, so younger again, who might come through. I saw some bloke called Karen (first name) at one of the Asian tournaments last year who looked good (not that I'm an authority or owt), and another one called Medyesenov (or something, sure that's wrong) who also looked good. There's another Canadian one as well whose name I've forgotten who looks good.

And much as I love Pot, and I really really do, I think he has to prove himself sooner rather than later. He's got to show he can consistently beat the likes of Rafa, Djok, Fed, Murray etc, and win another biggie, or he's always going to be hovering just below the top three. I get upset when people say his US Open win was a fluke - I don't think it was a fluke by any means, but I do think he's got to win another big one soon.

Gosh, I wish I could spend my life in tennis land!

Raahh · 13/01/2014 19:09

I'd love to live in Tennis landGrin It would be so great.

I agree Pot needs to prove himself soon. And sadly, he's a bit injury prone. Like they all seem to be these days. Federer, and Djok are exceptions, really- they seem to have escaped injury (though it's catching up with Fed now).

I think you could be right - and the Dimitrovs/Janovic's and Raonics (boo hissGrin) will find them selves leap frogged by the youngsters coming up behind them.

And it's time Tsonga stripped off and ran around the court nekkid showed us what he's made of.

threebats · 14/01/2014 07:06

Morning Ladies,
Is anybody allowed to join your thread - anybody being those of us who pull our heads out of general life for the big tournaments only? Or is this s die-hard, all the tourns, everywhere, every place club?
I was on the Wimbledon one under different name if that helps me get in on this... And the American. I can't watch this one as Sky buggered the American up for me and what was meant to be a pass for tennis turned into a huge bill they carried on charging me for for a good 2 months after it the robbing feckers. Dare risk it again...
Murray is playing, I am listening to the radio for the game. It sucks, it is not like watching it at all.

JuanPotatoTwo · 14/01/2014 08:40

Of course threebats, any and all welcome. As long as they keep hands off Pot, he's MINE :). I usually watch on tennistv.com but it's playing silly buggers at mo net, although that may be just for me.

So Pot, Murray, Tsonga, Raonic (boo hiss) all through.

Mama1980 · 14/01/2014 09:01

Welcome threebats Smile I'm watching the Australian on Eurosport player, if you have a tablet it's £3.99 for a month no minimum subscription so I just pay for Eurosport the months it shows tennis.

Mama1980 · 14/01/2014 10:41

Well that was a bit of a anti climax, feel sorry for tomic but pleased rafa is throughGrin

threebats · 14/01/2014 11:05

Juan Remember you from the other threads - hello Smile I remember Potato is yours fear not - would never, ever tread on your toes... I am Boris Becker's biggest fan, I am the person who wanted and still wants to be in the broom cupboard with him for 3 minutes... Ahh, the high days of Wimbledon and all that excitement.

I was listening on the radio to the win if you can call it listening - was battling ice on roads and peeing my pants for the entire drive. Hate drives on ice. Am off college today so can try to find some coverage somewhere to catch.
Eurosport is a free sports channel? I am off to check on my sky Tv now which means an entire day in the living room if I get it but the cleaning can wait, right?
Thanks for the welcome!

JuanPotatoTwo · 14/01/2014 11:15

Oh threebats, are you my fellow Swansea-ite? Whose daughter had a baby? Whose doing sports massage? Didn't you have a five or something in your old name? Fear not, I'm not a scary stalker, just remember trivia and not the important stuff! I'm supposed to be working today but I'm bored. :)
