Midwives (BBC2) - We are expecting not to have any pain...

....We are expecting not to have any pain? How bloody patronising and smug did he sound? And if there is any pain we are just going to have to overcome it. Hmm

At least he said that, if it got too bad, it would be up to her - as long as she actually does steel she can choose drugs if she needs them.

Far too much we going on there for my liking - but I have a headache, and have just made the most crap dinner ever, so it is possible I am in a bit of a grumpy mood.

Glad I'm not the only one who came on MN after to look for a thread on this. He was a very controlling man, plain as day evn with a language barrier. What kind of uninformed, head in the sand idiot thinks scans are harmful to the baby? I really feel sorry for the child, going to have a very restrictive and controlled childhood by the look of things.

Doodledumdums · 03/09/2013 22:56

Argh he was AWFUL. I came looking for this thread too.

How on earth do scans harm babies? And modern medicine saves lives, idiot.

He made me very uneasy. Plus all that belly rubbing was ridiculous, how she had the restraint to not whack him round the head, i'll never know!

ImFineThankYou · 03/09/2013 22:58

I did not like the way he was patting her head. I'd have smashed him for doing that.
Why on gods earth would you refuse antibiotics?! Wtf?

Capitola · 03/09/2013 22:59

All that rubbing her belly in a downward motion - I'd have KILLED him.

What a nob

SconeInSixtySeconds · 04/09/2013 09:34

I just came looking for this thread too! I felt v.uncomfortable watching the Russian woman, I hope she learns enough English to come on here so we can tell her to LTB. :(

I really liked the couple who had their second as an elective cs - probably because it echoed so strongly what I went through. I remember having ds and crying as well :) it was such a relief.

and now I am not broody at all oh no

scarlet5tyger · 04/09/2013 10:40

Did anyone else notice that when the Russian couple's baby was born the dad was either filming it or taking pics of it on an iPhone?? So, no scans, no iron tablets (!), no pain relief but its fine to have a mobile phone next to its head within seconds of the birth...!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/09/2013 10:57

Yes - the no iron tablets, no antibiotics thing is absolutely crazy. Anaemia is not good for the mother, and why wouldn't he want his wife and his baby to be in the best possible health? And whilst I do agree that over-prescription of antibiotics is a bad thing, and some infections do clear up on their own, others don't (and even when they do, it can take longer, and be more debilitating) so why wouldn't you want your nearest and dearest to recover as fast as possible?

Capitola I actually would have broken DH's wrists if he'd come near me like that. A student midwife started rubbing my spine and I nearly decked her!! Poor thing she was only being nice!

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 04/09/2013 14:01

I am just watching this - knew there would be a MN thread.

The Russian dad is annoying me, but to be fair, I don't think baked beans are a Russian thing at all, and there is a concern about scans. My MIL was worried when I mentioned I had scans of my niece. So I think there has been some kind of health scare, maybe?

Better iron-rich foods would be green leafy veg, which is pretty common in trad Russian food.

I grant I think he's a tosser, just that struck me.

Cheekybubbles · 04/09/2013 21:09

Just watching and totally stunned that guy! How dare he decide what pain relief she wants!

At my hospital they made sure to speak to every woman alone to check that there were no problems with the relationship. I wonder if they managed to speak to her... Poor poor woman.

LRDMaguliYaPomochTebeSRaboti · 04/09/2013 21:15

I think they had the translator there, they just didn't show all of those bits? I could be wrong. But there was a bit where the midwife said what was the baby's name - which the husband had said before, and she said 'oh, I don't know' in Russian, and he translated that.

I would be inclined to raise an eyebrow at the vegan no medicine shizzle, but I wasn't convinced he was genuinely being quite as much of a tosser as he came across.

Their baby was gorgeous, too.

LilyAmaryllis · 04/09/2013 22:01

Yes, he was awful. I was really shocked how the midwives just accepted the no iron tablet thing though. Surely they should have had a good job at changing their mind on that one at least. The poor girl looked white as a sheet after her baby was born. As one who needed iron tablets during pregnancy - the way it saps your energy... I really felt for her. How is she going to recover from the birth with no energy?

Goodness me the contrast between poor Gisele with no pain relief and the lady with an epidural...

In this day and age when there are so many options. How did Gisele not crack! I went quite rapidly from gas and air to DH yelling "We'll have it all" (ie all the pain relief options). (Didn't get the epidural though)

PLUS there are such things as TENS machines. Surely there aren't any ways they can affect the baby?

mousyBoo · 05/09/2013 01:01

I agree he seemed strange and I would kick anyone who touches me during a contraction, but bear in mind it's a tv show they will only show those bits that would make a good show! I remember a couple of years ago a local priest was really embarrassed by the way he was presented laughing at gypsies in My big fat gypsy wedding. In reality he was laughing answering a different question than was shown on tv! As for the couple, I've never met them but know of them as friends of friends, they are fine, she is happy and baby is doing well, so don't worry about them!

I agree the husband was a complete arsehole!
Surely if they were so into natural birth experience they would have tried hypno birthing, massage etc, not extreme rubbing of a contacting uterus.
My DP rubbed my back if he rubbed any other part of me during labour I would have smacked him in the mouth! Grin
No scans because they are dangerous and yet you pull out a mobile phone to radiate your baby!
I gotta say I prefer this programme to OBEM seems less staged.

lyndie · 05/09/2013 11:12

I'm glad others though he was odd, I was looking for a thread about this prog!! DH was watching from behind his laptop and didn't really get it. I agree this series is better, it seems calmer and more informative.

Tiredemma · 05/09/2013 11:17

I remember going into delivery suite and saying "ill just have the gas and air"- I had one more contraction and begged for an epidural.

Agree man was a bit odd, and if DP started pushing at my stomach like that in labour I would have him by the throat.

Meglet · 05/09/2013 11:27

I was virtually yelling "LTB!" at the tv. She looked ill with such a limited diet.

Creepy bloke Sad.

I'm watching now in complete disbelief Shock. 'We' will have to manage the pain Hmm, she looked so ill and the conversation with the mw was farcical, 'oh, we don't eat that', is the poor woman living on apricots then?! I haven't got to the antibiotics bit yet but I fear it may give me The Rage. Poor woman Sad. I wonder if they'd let the poor baby have antibiotics if needed? I bet he won't be vaccinated either Sad

I can really relate to the elcs decision couple, I went through the whole previous emcs counselling experience. I went with the cs and it was definitely the right decision for us Smile

Yonionekanobe · 05/09/2013 20:08

It was very, very odd. All I could think is that baby will be binge eating junk food on his way home from school by the time he is 12 and goodness knows what else by his 15th birthday.
