Mogul, that's lovely, they were both lovely lads so he has done you proud!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/07/2013 13:06

It generally seemed badly designed in a few aspects. If they are going to toruture children like this they need to rethink some of the processes.

gleegeek · 03/07/2013 13:24

Just been watching this! I am so glad Shrinidi won - what a gorgeous gorgeous girlSmile She just exuded a love for learning, she didn't appear to be either big headed about her abilities nor crippled by them. A quiet confidence which should take her far. I can't wait to see her books on the shelves - she has a captivating way with words.

From the little we saw of Ben he seemed another clever but well-rounded wee boy. I loved that he had surrounded himself with his Team Geek friends! I really hope they look out for each other as they move up the school system - we're not great at the emotional support some of these children may need...

Connor was let down by his mum IMO. I wonder how she coped with his not winning? I hope she could put herself to one side and look after her son for a change.

I felt very sorry for Oscar being pitted against Shrinidhi in the debate - I think he should have been in the final tbh. He obviously comes from a long line of mathematicians, he'll do very well as a grown up I think.

All in all an interesting series, a bit difficult to watch at times. And of course we've only seen half of the story...

Moominsarehippos · 03/07/2013 13:35

Aw moggy - those boys are so lucky to have their friendship. They seem like a lovely group of boys - genuinely happy for the long-fringed lad whose name I can't remember.

gleegeek · 03/07/2013 13:36

X-posted Yes moggy lovely boysSmile

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 14:18

Thank you . They are generally good friends. My DS from team geek was texting Ben while it was on. They are great boys and do look after each other. They have been friends for a long time but team geek came about after they took part in a science quiz togeather. It would have been great to have more they filmed them lots and the three of them togeather are so funny at times

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/07/2013 14:23

It was a shame that the focus went so much on to just a few children, but at least moggy you didn't have to sorry so much about being at the mercy of the editor!

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 14:33

Very true. It was edited to what we saw while they were filming. Ie it was hinted that team geek were a liitle upset butwhat they did not show was the two boys telling ben just how well he did and how pleased they were with him. Both boys watched in the audience as did us mums of team geek

Taffeta · 03/07/2013 14:44

What a shame then instead of showing Team Geek, where they could have celebrated the childrens friendships etc they chose instead to vilify certain parents and their children.

Honestly if you rewatch it, nearly all of the language they used in relation to Connors mother was exceptionally negative. "Determined single mum..." etc. Nasty stuff.

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 14:57

Totally agree. We were told that it was going to show how clever children mixed with others. All three of team geek are clever and as my DS said they formed a group as they were unpopluar at school. I wanted to see if other gifted children had come accross the same issues that team geek had.

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 14:59

And your right. Not great langue used for connors mum. I did like it when they said about connor being her investment.

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 15:01

Anyway thank you again for the lovely comments about team geek. They are all still very much good friends

Moominsarehippos · 03/07/2013 15:13

They should have their own show! Its so nice to see kids being funny and kind and smart - not like all the smart-ass backchat on kids tv these days!

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 15:31

Lol my DS would love that. Not sure my oldest DS would though he was rather embrassed by the attention he got. A lot of his friends know he brother.

alreadytaken · 03/07/2013 18:38

As twelveleggedwalk's Dh has pointed out the order in which the children answered determined the winner. That isn't a fair way of doing so but various other things in the competition were no fairer. Moggumum89 do you know how they chose the order in the final?

Team geek were lovely and it was good to see one of the children with friends and not just their parents.

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 19:47

I dont know how they chose the order sadly. They took the children away between rounds. I know that ben was in fact second to answer questions. The winner was well deserved and team geek did congratulate her on her. My ds said she was a nice girl.

moggymum89 · 03/07/2013 19:49

I do think the show missed out on clever children and friendships though. Some of the others seemed so loney yet I am sure they have friends too

invicta · 03/07/2013 20:09

In the quick fire round, surely they would have continued to have more questions, until someone got one wrong.

muggy - loving Team geek

helenislovely · 03/07/2013 20:41

I loved the little girl who sniffed books. I am with her on that one. Also was it just me or were the words she had to spell MUCH harder than the rest?

pussycatwillum · 03/07/2013 20:45

There certainly seemed to be some inconsistencies in the levels of the questions.

curlew · 04/07/2013 08:00

The spellings were very inconsistently difficult. But it didn't matter because they had them all in advance to learn. My averagely bright (for Mumsnet) ds could have learned them all if I had said there was a Blackberry Curve in it it for him if he did!

Moominsarehippos · 04/07/2013 09:08

The maths ones were inconsistent too. Even I could do some of them. I thought the order of roinds didn't work. The debate ought to have come earlier and should have been done I a way so that the parents didn't have the chance to write the speeches.

Maybe score each round and tot the points up at the end rather than a one round sudden death affair.

ouryve · 04/07/2013 22:46

Moggy - team geek are fabulous. DS1 really needs a friendship group like that!

alreadytaken · 05/07/2013 08:45

Some other gifted children probably do have friendship issues, moggymum. The child whose father timetabled their evenings was shown running after other children saying wait for me, friends would normally have waited. Could have been editing again but I did wonder with some of the children what time they had to maintain friendships, most children would sometimes be sharing things with their friends after school.
