Watching on catch up. Think Connor's mum is a netmumser. Everything she says has a garish blinky alongside it.

Grin She's bloody annoying!

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 22:51

Poor Catherine. :(

Taffeta · 25/06/2013 22:52

"IQ is not a very good indicator of true intelligence, all it represents is symbolic logic and ergo, mathematical skill. The ability to memorise facts and predict sequences does not walk hand in hand with intelligence"

So true.

bico · 25/06/2013 22:53

I know who wins.

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 22:54

They had a list of words in advance, surely anyone can learn how to spell a finite list if they spend enough time practising. I don't really see the big deal in them being able to do it.

DoctorAnge · 25/06/2013 22:55

Catherine's mother found a way to yet again insult her daughter on losing at the final.

" you did so much better than I thought you'd do!"

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 22:55

I can't stand Connor's mum.

Taffeta · 25/06/2013 22:57

Bico, how do you know?

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 23:01

I don't agree with Longyin's dad's approach to childrearing, but I do quite like him. I think he is one of the only parents doing it for the benefit of his child and not for his own vicarious glory. And he and longyin seem to have a nice relationship.

Still18atheart · 25/06/2013 23:03

Do you think any of the parents are mumnetters??

I want Shrinidi to win.

ouryve · 25/06/2013 23:03

Catherine's mum is just awful. I really do hope that this competition has helped her to appreciate this competition for who she is, but -

Catherine gave a glimpse of the AIBU she'll be writing in 8 years' time! She is so aware that she doesn't have the status of Most Favoured Child.

ouryve · 25/06/2013 23:05

ITA, Jinsei - on first look Terrence seems quite dogmatic, but he does actually allow the odd subversively humourous comment from Longyin. That's a kid who isn't entirely uncomfortable with his situation.

bico · 25/06/2013 23:05

I googled Blush

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 23:29

Yes, so true. Poor kid. The mum obviously had both kids IQ tested and decided that DS was cleverer and betterbecause he had a slightly higher score. Hmm

I agree that Longyin seemed happy enough. :) I loved the way little Oscar said "it doesn't matter" when longyin went out. He looked genuinely concerned for him. Quite sweet.

Jinsei · 25/06/2013 23:48

Bico, please pm me with the name - I couldn't find it on google and I don't want to watch if one of the horrible kids won!

salsmum · 26/06/2013 00:03

I'm afraid that I find Hugo quite vomit inducing smug, arrogant etc....I really do think that he has traits of SN. The fact that he knows EVERYTHING about the subjects he's interested in which he seems quite obsessive about can point to Autism/Aspurgeres (sp) although I've worked with children with these conditions I'm not an expert. I really thought the fact that he continually disrupted the other kids when they were trying to memorise the cards really unfair and felt he should have be taken out. I think Rosa felt that he'd really put her off concentrating so much so that she couldn't remember ANY of the cards...the poor girl was in pieces Sad.

Jinsei · 26/06/2013 00:23

sals, if you think that Hugo has some kind of SN, do you think it's really fair to describe him as "vomit-inducing, smug, arrogant" etc? Hmm I didn't like his behaviour either, but he is just a child.

His parents on the other hand...well yes, I did find them quite vomit-inducing, and they were old enough to have known better. Sadly, I don't think they are doing young Hugo any favours by setting him up in the way that they've done. But that's their fault, and not his.

ExcuseTypos · 26/06/2013 00:33

When you saw his dad whispering about all the 'swots' I felt really sad for Hugo. He's been brought up surrounded by spite, arrogance and sneeriness.
It does't matter how intelligent he is, he's going to find life very difficult with the attitudes he's inherited from his parents.

olidusUrsus · 26/06/2013 02:09

I have the feeling that a lot of these kids will fly off the fucking rails be experimenting when they hit 18 and/or gain some freedom.

Lavenderloves · 26/06/2013 07:06

My mum was just like Catherines, my brother was the golden child.

I grew up with all of those comments and she still does it now despite ignoring that I am way more successful and affluent than my DB.

Lavenderloves · 26/06/2013 07:09
  • ignore despite
Moominsarehippos · 26/06/2013 07:19

Interesting though how smart some of these children are even without the 'houhouse' environment that some grow up in. Their interest in learning and natural ability is amazing in some cases - little sponges!

Its a shame that some of the parents are so desperate for their child to win (to what end I wonder) that they can hardly contain themselves. I suspect there have been many sleepless nights pondering new techniques.

Catherines mum will probably tell her 'ok your bright' and leave it at that. Had her little brother got that far, she would have been on the phone to Harvard and booking a plane. Her attitude was odd - male preference over female child perhaps? I suspect Catherine will be left to find her own way and hopefully will have some good teachers who will nurture her intelligent, and good friends/friends families who will make her laugh and feel 'normal' and not second to her brother (who will, if this goes on, grow up to be an 'entitled' chap).

RedHelenB · 26/06/2013 07:32

Oscar is so sweet, but looks so worried always! I've never seen Hugo smile but Shriv & Longyin look happy children. Looking at the size of Hugo's house I think he will be funded to be an eternal student studying his aeroplanes or whatever it is he wants to do - he won't need people skills cos he'll be wrapped in his own cocoon!

And it was awful for Connor to have no time to himself during the day - thought we'd stopped that when child labour was abolished!

Lavenderloves · 26/06/2013 07:45

The big thing for me was that Conners mum didn't hug him. She didn't even say sorry.

InMySpareTime · 26/06/2013 08:08

WooHoo, I got 8/10, 8/10, 7/10, 9/10 on the quiz. How sad is it that it really made my day?Grin 9/10 on the mental maths surprised me, I don't do much maths nowadays. It helped that it was multiple choice, I saved a lot of time by looking at the choices, if they had different last numbers I just added the last digit of each number instead of working out the entire sum.
