Watched it last night. Tis good, but disturbing. Gillian Anderson very good. Jamie Dornan scary. Anyone else see it?

Thought last night was a major let down after an excellent run. I'd have much preferred to see it wrapped up and a new story for the next series which is what? A year away? Too long to wait for the loose ends to be tied up Angry

hollyisalovelyname · 11/06/2013 11:29

I am the OP and started the thread to just have 'water cooler' DISCUSSION on the series. A bit like the Broadchurch thread. Everybody's opinion is valid.

good to know. nothing i like better than a bit of water-cooler chat.

Aitch I found your input really interesting. Fascinated that you watched it as part of your job and ypu seemed to have inside info.

Do we really think Paul was brought up in care homes, though? A massive proportion of him, his identity and character is a lie - why not this? And is it not more likely that his pattern of abuse is more likely replicating DV against the mother by the father seen in the family home? Or perhaps that is how he ended up in care - the father killing the mother?
Perhaps he really WAS Peter at uni etc and Paul is a fake identity so he evades capture?

hollyisalovelyname · 11/06/2013 12:03

Aitch I am on iphone. I can't make out the emocion. I hate the newish emocions on the mumsnet app... But that is a whole other thread!

Just read the review on the Guardian - Lucy Mangan has a funny line about brunette professional women in Scotland rushing out to buy peroxide and guns!

Aitch the getting back with Paul thing I could see, it's more the dumping everything to run to Scotland at short notice that jarred. Her character seems too methodical and tied to her family and job for that. I can explain away how and why she might quit her job or get the time off, but I just don't know that it is entirely consistent with the character...

Re series 2 - he's an addict. He'll kill again.

I do agree that there were both weaknesses and inconsistencies in the series but I doubt any producer / director goes into shooting thinking 'we'll make it über stylish and atmospheric to cover any plot holes / bad scripting'.

They go in truly believing in the product, in it's ability to sustain a series and desperate for the BAFTA nomination! They believe any scripting issues have been dealt with in rehearsal and during re-write after re-write.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 12:46

but i'm not criticising the director, i think whoever it was did an excellent job. i'm criticising viewers who were so distracted by the beautiful long-shots over Belfast that they forgot to think about what the characters were actually doing... Grin (that was a grin, holly. Wink) (that was a wink).

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 12:48

yeah you're right about dumping everything, teej. although who the hell was that woman, anyway? she was about as well-drawn as one of the cows on her folks' farm. the only flash of personality was in the opening scenes in the bar, where she actually looked like a great gal. never to be seen again...

wintera · 11/06/2013 13:25

I agree with Aitch, the wife's reaction didn't surprise me that much either. It should have done, but I find myself constantly amazed in real life about what goes on in marriages and what women will put up with so I could totally see that happening. Very sad really if you think about it.

As for doubts that GA seems to have men at her feet, I could definitely see that too. In my experience in real life again some men and women just have the 'it' factor. They might not be the best looking people, with the best bodies but there's something about them that just makes them sexy and attractive. They just have 'it'! Ithink GA is definitely one of those people .

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:27

she is, but she's an actress. would she be a policewoman? i guess that's the question. but then we have, after watching her for five hours, zero clue as to what her motivation is either.

lurcherlover · 11/06/2013 13:36

The wife is trapped now, isn't she? She's lied to the police. If that comes out, she'll be done for perjury. So leaving him isn't as simple as it seems. I did think her having sex with him was a bit far-fetched though.

Aitch, I have no problem with you bemoaning the programme and pointing out its faults, but I object to being insulted and told that I should "take a long hard look at myself" or words to that effect, just because I had the temerity to enjoy it. Absolutely no need for that.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:40

ah but you see that's not what i said.

wintera · 11/06/2013 13:40

Well the most glamorous woman I ever knew worked in an IT dept so I'd say GA could be a copper in real life yes lol.

MrsBertMacklin · 11/06/2013 13:40

Is it true by the way, that she would risk losing her job if he was put on the sex offender's register? Is this a procedural thing, or was he implying that the scandal that would hit the family would result in this happening?

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:43

"when in fact imo anyone who thought this was anything more than a piece of stylishly-shot exploitative nonsense should be taking a long hard look at themselves."

see? quite a few people have said that it was enjoyable rubbish, or similar. i have no problem with that (other than they are letting the BBC away with murder). if, however, you think it was a quality product, though, with a great script and well-drawn characters etc etc, you do seriously need to think about sharpening your critical faculties.

lurcherlover · 11/06/2013 13:47

You said "anyone who thought this was more than a piece of stylishly shot, exploitative nonsense should take a long hard look at themselves", Aitch.

Well, I did think it was more than that. I didn't think it was nonsense, and I thought the script was clever. Sure, it had its faults, but on the whole I thought it was well done. Tell me how your comment doesn't belittle and insult viewers like me? Absolutely fine to criticise the programme but sneering like that isn't on.

lurcherlover · 11/06/2013 13:49

I'm quite happy with my critical faculties, thanks. Hmm

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:54

good for you, lurcher. you think i'm sneering, i reckon you're under-thinking. perhaps we're both right? this is the stuff of discussion boards all over the internet - if we all agreed it would be very boring indeed.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 11/06/2013 13:55

so, to go back to the discussion. how was the script clever?

wigglesrock · 11/06/2013 13:57

Aitch.. I enjoyed it, it passed an hour for me, it was better than lots of the stuff that's on tv.

I wasn't watching it with a workhead on. Did it keep me occupied for an hour, yup. I found bits of it very sad, bits funny.

I'm not one for watching tv and pulling at it, if that makes me a lazy viewer than I'm fine with that.

I know for example that when I would do something with my friends like go for dinner and they would be enjoying it, I wouldn't be piping up with "oh but do you see the way the server is dishing out the food .. not very professional etc"

Most people watch tv to relax, if you don't that's up to you.
