Eyes down for a full house on Monday.

Hopefully we can combine both threads.

In advance, why don't we each post ONE theory, then we can all gloat afterwards about how clever we are Grin

There's also loads of questions I'd LIKE to have answers to but don't really NEED answers to. Much like real life I suppose.

I loved it and can't wait for it to return Smile

ohforfoxsake · 23/04/2013 06:38

Danny and Joe were in the hut with the lights on. Mark, Danny's dad, had parked his car outside the hut to go off with Hotel Lady.

Now, if I were Joe, and I was keeping a meeting secret, I'd probably wonder why the car was there and that it might not be a terribly good idea...

tiredemma · 23/04/2013 06:55

OC-OUTSTANDING acting last night.

amazing.

MortaIWombat · 23/04/2013 06:58

I wondered why Mark didn't recognise the car of his son's best friend's dad/neighbour/dinner party guest. Hmm
And then get suspicious abut why it as parked on a clifftop late at night. Mark would surely have been on the look-out and nervous about who might see him with hotel woman.... And when his son turned up dead, he's surely mention the car he saw up there that night, even if it meant blowing his affair open.

MrsSalvoMontalbano · 23/04/2013 07:21

I still think it was fab. We'd guessed the murderer but we are a bunch of educated mumsnetters, bordering on obsessive with the case, presumably not everyone was?

Yellow completely agree. I never normally watch dramas, this has been gripping and made all the more enjoyable by the fantastic threads on here! Likeotheres, I was fidgety yesterday, like it affected me personally...
I liked (and was very surprised) by the way the denouement did not happen right at the end, which again differentiated it from the usual 'whodunnits' - utterly magnificent acting from OC and DT especially, but the whole cast amazing (the boys - what actors!).
Also, made me love my DH more, because despite never having seen it, or any tv for years, he cuddled up with me while I watched and cried, poured me wine, didn't ask 'who's he' etc... Grin
Cried again at the beacons, goose-pimples....

hollyisalovelyname · 23/04/2013 07:29

Gilly, what extra scene?

ohforfoxsake · 23/04/2013 07:32

Holly it was in itv's Facebook/twitter but also a link on it to here further up. They told us about it during the credits.

AND the row with the 'post man'. What was that all about?

Surely this is going to all be revealed in the next one?

diddl · 23/04/2013 07:53

I enjoyed it overall.

Iusually record & watch today, but was hooked last night.

I don't think that the Will Mellor character was physic-lucky guess re the killer being known to the family imo.

And DT & the pendant-I reckon he'd done some snooping whilst installing stuff.

AuntieMaggie · 23/04/2013 07:58

I am disappointed with last nights episode after being promised twists until the end!

It was ok but I felt it was a bit rushed with the reveal and was disappointed with it being Joe given Mayday but thought Ellie's reaction was fantastic.

The car was Mark's car, they'd gone off in hers and she returned him to his. You saw him get in it.

bottleofbeer · 23/04/2013 08:38

No, I definitely think Will Mellor was supposed to be a genuine psychic. The smile and nod between him and Beth as the funeral cars drove off was, I reckon, them trying to tell us he was the real deal. A small twist but a twist all the same because he could just as easily have been in the frame for it all but no, he just was who he said he was. That was my take anyway. I liked that, a hint of the paranormal without making it all very woo.

MadBusLady · 23/04/2013 08:40

Morning all. I've only just watched it. I had to go to bed last night with fluey shivers. Sad I was so looking forward to the live thread!

Beautifully acted, I am floods of tears here but yes, also a teensy bit disappointed. Not so much that it was Joe, but that it was the old child abuse thing again. Kind of hoping that season 2 might flesh out the story a little. Did Tom really not know? And yes, the bloody postman! Grin

MadBusLady · 23/04/2013 08:44

The extra scene was a bit pants... However maybe ollie telling the journo lady that he was not going to take the other job and would stay at the echo in Broadchurch was a clue towards the next series...

I just watched in on the ITV player and there isn't anything after the last "Broadchurch will return" screen. Was there a bit I didn't see?

bottleofbeer · 23/04/2013 08:46

It said it at the end of the programme on ITV.

MadBusLady · 23/04/2013 08:48

Ah, just found it on YouTube.

Definitely more to come on Sandbrook and Alec's past, I think.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 23/04/2013 08:52
- extra scene on youtube
MrsClown1 · 23/04/2013 08:54

Amazing programme. I now have new respect for DT - I have never particularly rated him before. Am gutted it is finished.

maybemyrtle · 23/04/2013 08:57

Disappointing ending. Interesting, seemed to end with a bit of the David Lynch (who really knows what goes on behind the white picket fence etc). Especially the slug.

Really enjoyed the obsessive theories though. Grin

Gingerdodger · 23/04/2013 09:14

I found the ending a bit underwhelming to be honest. I think that it kind of didn't go with the whole whodunnit of the previous episodes and actually think we should have spent less time on the whodunnit and more on the impact on the community. Maybe that wouldn't have been as good telly.

Great acting throughout and definitely warrants DT and OC working together jn the future. Other people's lives in the village also be interesting stories too I reckon.

I thought it was going to be full scale paedophile ring and DT would die though so shows how much I know!

Fiderer · 23/04/2013 09:17

I've just watched it too, had to work last night but must admit, the lack of ads is much better.

I had Joe down as one of the main suspects but couldn't figure out why, didn't think any abuse/love story would be the answer. Was still thinking Nige involved too somehow with drugs/poaching.

It was very well acted, Joe made it believable and OC and DT were excellent.

Liked the beacon ending.

Did wonder why Beth didn't ask herself the same question she asked of Ellie, "How could you not know?" Though maybe she did and we weren't shown it. Mark seemed to show more remorse/regret/guilt at having failed Danny but I never got the same sense of that from Beth. One scene with the vicar when she said it was her job to keep him safe, for him to grow up but not much emotion.

DT shave off that foul beard now Grin

SomewhereInTheMiddle · 23/04/2013 09:22

At first DP and I were a bit stunned that the reveal was so early, and were waiting for the twist. Also a bit disappointed that it was child abuse as usual. We were a bit "well is that it?".

But actually, I really like the fact that didn't do the usual format of a dramatic climax... the murderer is revealed... credits roll. The strength of this series for me has always been the acting - I could have picked holes in the plot right from the first episode (Ellie was too close to the case to have been allowed to work on it, in such a small town Beth's reaction on the beach would have spread like wildfire with no need for anyone to tweet, the body would have been found much much earlier in the morning, etc etc) - but that's not really the point of the series, I think the point was to explore the relationships between people and what happens to those relationships when people are touched by tragedy. I think it did that really well, and continued to do that right up until the end. The acting from all the main characters in the final episode was stunning; I was holding my breath when DT had to tell OC it was Joe. I think having the main part of the finale to explore the emotions and repercussions of it being Joe was really brave. Even with some of the plot improbabilities that that entailed.

Oh and yes it didn't clear up a lot of loose ends, but The Killing was guilty of that too (as well as some very improbable plot twists and police procedural anomalies!) - I guess in a real life investigation there are numerous false leads and loose ends. Not everything ties up neatly like in an Agatha Christie book.

Amazing performances all round. Surely going to scoop some awards??

fruitstick · 23/04/2013 09:23

I thought the psychic bit was well done.

Personally, I think they are a load of charlatans but some people, like Beth, do find comfort from them which I suppose is OK, whatever the actual truth.

I will miss Broadchurch and this thread.

diddl · 23/04/2013 09:33

When it was revealed as Joe so soon I thought that he might be covering for Tom-wrongly thinking that it was Tom.

I didn't really like the way they seemed to (imo) make light of the abuse.

"Well I didn't touch him & I really loved him"-err, the hugs were for his own gratification!!

And Ellie saying that he might not have gone on to do worse things??!!
