it really upsets me to see these beautiful animals with no food because the polar ice is melting faster and for longer....

if i were the film crew i would be lugging huge quantities of meat about with me....Sad
i dont know how they manage not to interfere.

Well, several good reasons have just been given by Gordon (and from looking online) as to why they can't be artificially fed -

  • it's illegal (Norwegian govt)
  • polar bears would get habituated to human feeding and it could wreck their natural behaviour and ability to feed naturally
  • it would cause polar bears to associate humans with food and they could then frequent human areas and cause problems and be shot as a result.

Sadly it's not as simple as give poor Lyra and Mickey some meat. I wish it was.

I remember another show a few years ago where the motherland. Her 2 cubs were being hunted by a male. One of the cubs was really weak, the other had to choose between the 2 cubs, sticking with the weak one, which would have involved the male catching them up or leaving it behind, saving the stronger one and herself. It was horrendous, if I even see a whiff of a male bear, I'm off, I can't go through that again!

Vicar, polar bears swim very well, so it wouldn't have been a problem the whale carcass being in the sea I think.

Uppermid · 10/01/2013 22:23

Mother and not motherland!

Tabliope · 10/01/2013 22:24

I know but I still think I'd get something like a seal or part of a whale for them but in a way they didn't see any humans about. If she can just get Mickey another year older their chances might improve.

Tabliope · 10/01/2013 22:25

Just saw you had the same idea Vicar Smile

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/01/2013 22:26

thanks, i realised that selks but i think she is very very weak, she isnt allowing micky to suckle....i just thought they could have pushed the whale carcass a bit nearer....i know its not really possible but its too hard to watch Sad

Uppermid, I remember that too! It was awful. The decision she had to make. Everywhere she went she couldn't shake this male off that was just waiting for his moment. Horrible. Nature is cruel. Oh god, where's Mickey. Oh thank god he was behind his mum.

Tabliope · 10/01/2013 22:28

Well, I'd break the law. Obviously you don't want them depending on humans for food but there's ways of doing it.

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/01/2013 22:28

oh no! do we not find out if micky survives?????

are they just going to leave them? aarrrrrgggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

At least we're leaving them when they're alive - I can sleep tonight thank god. I wonder if there'll be an update in a few years.

Tabliope · 10/01/2013 22:31

He's got lovely curls. A final twist - enough food for the winter. Brilliant.

Tabliope · 10/01/2013 22:32

oh bloody hell - why didn't they go and check Mickey was with her. Annoying.

Selks · 10/01/2013 22:32

Oh clever Lyra, she's travelled and found another whale carcass. Possibly a happy-ish ending I hope.

Is it not on tomorrow; thought it was?

ThatVikRinA22 · 10/01/2013 22:32

i hope that last bit was true.....that her collar sent a final signal from where that whale carcass was.....

OP posts:
Selks · 10/01/2013 22:33

Yeah, hope they didn't make that bit up

Highlander · 10/01/2013 22:36

Wow, that was an amazing series.

Hope they can go back and see if they survive the winter.

Quite difficult viewing; the lack of sea ice and watching the polar bears starving Sad

wintera · 10/01/2013 23:31

This has been a weird show for me as two of the polar bears have the same name as my two children! So its been all the more personal for me. Sorry to say, I had to stop watching when they lost little Luca sob.

crockonboosh · 11/01/2013 00:30

Wonderful programme but heartbreaking too. I couldn't have left beautiful Lyra without food. My heart would rule my head and I would break the law too and left some food for them. Watching Mickey trying to suckle and being rejected by exhausted, weak mum tugged on my heart strings. My heart went out to Lyra and baby when the crew crept up on them and woke them from their sleep. Beautiful creatures.
Was sickened to see the photos of the hunted polar bears. Had to look away from screen. The pics of the cubs tied up to be taken to the zoo after seeing their mums hoisted on board after being slaughtered was too much to cope with. The bear traps upset me too. Human beings can be so wicked.

picketywick · 11/01/2013 12:52

Great polar bear show last night (thursday) The poor bears have a very tough life, Imagine walking 100 miles for food.

lazarusb · 11/01/2013 21:54

Part of me likes to think that as it's illegal they wouldn't do anything on camera but....on the other hand, I'm sure the lovely Gordon and his associates are highly ethical too. You could see his clear affection for them. Stunning programme.

OmgATalkingOnion · 14/01/2013 15:06

Aah there is a thread about this!Smile I loved this programme but some very sad bits. It was awful to see them starving and eating bits of old plasticAngry Sad

I would be useless at making a programme like that - I be doing totally the wrong thing and wanting to give them food.

Ds watched some of it with me. He suddenly said 'How do they know his name's Mickey?' Grin

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 15/01/2013 20:10

I love this programme but I missed what happened to Luca. Don't think I can bear to watch. Sad

Horsemad · 15/01/2013 20:21

They never found out what happened to Luca Sad
