What series should I get obsessed about?!

julietbat · 02/10/2012 13:35

I love love love getting myself immersed in great (usually American) tv series when I'm pottering around the kitchen or enjoying nights in on my own and I've just got to the end of my most recent obsession - Grey's Anatomy! Can anyone suggest a great series that I might not have tried?

The kind of stuff I love is...

West Wing
ER
Good Wife
Desperate Housewives
True Blood
24
Six Feet Under
The Wire
Sopranos
etc...

Thanks Smile

Deadwood.
Much better imho than mad men which looks great but just bored me frankly.

Agree with many other suggestions though. Came on for ideas for dh's xmas pressie. Couple of things we've not seen which I'll check out prices for. Thanks.

Sorry posted too early.

My favourites are:
Sons of anarchy,
Homeland,
True blood,
The killing,
Modern family
Big Bang theory.

BlingBubbles · 02/10/2012 19:15

Oh yes scarlettmummy, revenge is great, when I was on maternity leave I watched 18 episodes in a week.....

Elasticsong · 02/10/2012 19:26

Of course, Deadwood! How could I have missed it from my list? Also, similar but not quite as, um, brilliant, Hell on Wheels.

LauraPashley · 02/10/2012 19:36

Madmen- I loved the 1st 2 series, think it picks up again after a rubbishy bit in the middle
Homeland is just excellent

The Killing and Borgen are absolutely worth sitting down to!

margerykemp · 02/10/2012 19:37

Dallas (the old one)- it goes on forever, has so many twists and turns and has good female characters

Angel- S2-4 are the best

For comedy I watch Roseanne and Only Fools and Horses

Nip/Tuck seems to get forgotten about although I've not seen all of it

melrose place for 90s soap-esque storylines

Ally Mcbeal if you like legal but I prefer Damages

The Girls which is due to start soon on Sky Atlantic is supposed to be good

Charmed- 3 buffys

Due South

North and South

The Tudors

Frazier

Commander-in-Chief- Gina Davis doing the west wing

Gilmore Girls

One Tree Hill, but maybe too teenagery

other comedy- The Big bang theory and how I met your mother

The X-Files

Quantum Leap for retro feel good

Deadwood

This Life- 90s lawyers, not many episodes though

Twin Peaks-but a bit dated now

No Angels fo UK medical comedy

Scrubs for US

Yes, Minister fo political comedy that is still relevant

Fawlty Towers fo laughing out loud

I like all the stuff you've listed and I would definitely recommend Dexter. Boxsets are the lynchpin of mine and DH's marriage! Can't wait for Homeland to return. I also like True Blood and cough The Vampire Diaries (OK, Damon Salvatore). I have just found the first 2 series of Nip/Tuck at a bootsale so will be checking them out soon.

TheRealAmyFarrahFowler · 02/10/2012 19:55

Mad Men.
I'm jealous of people who haven't watched it yet.
Every series is better than the last one.

HiHowAreYou · 03/10/2012 13:31

We're watching Luck atm which I am enjoying in an "I can't understand half of what everybody is saying and when I can, half the time I don't understand it anyway" kind of way.

It reminds me of The Wire, and Deadwood, which I very much liked, but struggled with in that way. Lots of: "What did he say? Rewind it. No. Rewind it again. Did he say .......? What does that mean? Oh forget it."

It might actually be shit, but I can't tell!

justbogoffnow · 03/10/2012 13:42

Homeland
Damages

I felt just the same about Deadwood, HHAY! It had such a good atmosphere but I was often very unsure what was going on. I've been asking DH recently if it would be worth re-watching.

HiHowAreYou · 04/10/2012 09:41

"It becomes apparent later if it is important" is my calming mantra when watching indecipherable television.

Luck is very... mumbled. DH keeps turning it up and up but you just get... loud mumbles. Ha!

EasyFromNowOn · 04/10/2012 09:53

Luck was good, but it suffered from not having a proper ending, as it was renewed for season 2, but then cancelled whilst filming was underway.

HiHowAreYou · 04/10/2012 10:21

I haven't got to the end yet. I knew it'd been cancelled because horses died.
That was annoying about Deadwood too. Shame they didn't make more of them.

cookielove · 04/10/2012 20:20

DEXTER is the best, i watch almost everything listed ^^ up there Grin

TheSurgeonsMate · 04/10/2012 20:30

Dexter is a bit gory. Even knowing that it was about a serial killer, I was kind of surprised at the amount of serial killing in it. Although that aspect does calm down a bit, I think.

cookielove · 04/10/2012 20:37

A bit gory, true but ahhh i adore him and he's not even that good looking

wintera · 04/10/2012 22:19

I'm a total Joss Whedon fanatic so anything to do with him would get my vote, so . . . .

Buffy - best tv series ever. Totally ruined me for normal tele afterwards though.

Angel - very good spin off

Firefly - aww dear dear Firefly, axed by arseholes in its first season but quality tele nonetheless

Sorry if you've already watched these! Then you would already know how great they are!

cocolepew · 05/10/2012 10:32

Dexter
Damages
Big Bang Theory
Modern Family
The Middle

dinkystinky · 05/10/2012 10:48

I really liked Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (by Aaron Sorkin - first writer of West Wing, lots of WW regulars in it)

The Killing is great but v dark (in every sense)

If you want something cheesy and funny (in the manner of Scrubs), Community is excellent

And of course The Big Bang Theory is fun to watch for laughs

YesAnastasia · 05/10/2012 10:58

Oooh, my guilty pleasure is Private Practice. I get really into it, laugh p and quite often sob - but then I get embarrassed if my DH sees it too because it is a bit soap opera/share your feelings. Ace characters though.

I also love The Good Wife so I reckon you'll love PP :)

Another also, I second (or probably 10th) The Killing - the original one. Reeeeally fantastic television.

Boomeringue · 05/10/2012 11:11

A dark comedy to watch is 'Nurse Jackie',with Edie Falco (of Soprano's) in the lead role.
'An American Horror Story',with Jessica Lange.
'Episodes'.

Sons of Anarchy
Revenge
Dexter
Frasier
Mad Men,are all great.

I notice that you and no-one else have mentioned "The Shield" (morally compromised cops in LA) - if you haven't seen it then get stuck in!

Lovewearingjeans · 05/10/2012 16:32

I love The Good Wife and Veep was great.
