Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

OP posts:

Anyone else noticed that Bates's leg seems to have miraculously healed? He seemed mighty light on his feet when walking round the prison yard and threatening his cellmate.
(When I say "anyone else noticed...", I really mean that I haven't bothered to read the previous 701 posts on this thread)

diddl · 01/10/2012 18:55

notheroldie-I loathe Mary too.

Silly stuck up cow-"well, I´m going to be Countess Grantham & I rather think that the Countess should live at Downton Abbey"

I love Edith.

She deserves to be happy.

I hope that M&M are thoroughly miserable together & he bores her to death with how he bailed out Downton with Lavvy´s dad´s MC money!

HazeltheMcWitch · 01/10/2012 19:04

Loving this thread, love that Julian Fellowes has lifted the rat poison plot line from A. Christie, and LOVE the shark analogy.

Right, I reckon that Strallen is indeed impotent, and that is why he could not marry Lady Edith. He will confess this to her, and she will say it does not matter, and they will indeed 'do a Lofty and Michelle (Eastenders)' and elope. Poor Edith though, to not become a mother.

Oh, but hang on there a tick. Ethel, you want rid of your baby? But who on earth can look after it? I just don't know.

Righto. Ethel and Strallen. Win win.

I think that Sybil will somehow die in childbirth & Ethel will bring up the baby.

We call the dowager "Countess Catsbum" for obvious reasons. She's our favourite character!

diddl · 01/10/2012 19:40

I think that the Dowager was quite funny at first.

Thinks she´s just nasty now.

Eliza22 · 01/10/2012 19:45

I've switched off. I watched the first episode and just thought it was going round and round in circles. The storyline was dismal.

Shame really..... I loved the first two series.

Glad some of you still loving it though!

MamaMary · 01/10/2012 19:49

The storylines are abysmal, yes...it's like a rubbishy soap but not quite as bad as Neighbours which I used to watch! I just enjoy the sumptiousness of the period costume and setting. I'm always a sucker for period stuff!

losingtrust · 01/10/2012 19:53

Mary is so dull, Matthew is dull. Why do a lot of the stories centre around the two most boring characters. Even their voices are dull. I am afraid I have really gone off it and think they should kill those two off and let Ethel meet a scoundrel who shocks the society or she could meet a woman. I am afraid it is not even a rubbishy soap at the moment. Emmerdale for me at the moment. Although Thomas could be just as sexy as Cain.

cora bloody well grates on me
ediths my favourite

losingtrust · 01/10/2012 19:59

Sorry meant Edith not Ethel. She really needs to have a bit of a dumped sleep around like a normal woman. Shame Thomas gay in the programme that would have been a good storyline. Perhaps she will get off with his mom.

ErikNorseman · 01/10/2012 19:59

Edith
Not Ethel.
Just sayin

tribpot · 01/10/2012 20:10

No-one, I fear, has noted the return of Sybil's fright wig. Pickle's probably done a runner to find a decent hairdresser for her.

Chubfuddler · 01/10/2012 20:11

Oh I can't talk about what a mess poor Sybil looks. When I think how lovely she looked in those hareem pants with creepy peeping Tom looking through the window. Poor girl.

Bue · 01/10/2012 20:12

And another thing about the Crawley anti-Strallanism - was Mary's journo fiance all that much younger? Confused He was at least 25 years older than her! And an odious non-gentleman to boot.

I love Edith so much. If she can't have Strallan then I hope she goes off and becomes a fabulously liberated young woman. Suffrage!

Am predicting Matthew/Mary barren storyline next. You heard it here first.

MamaMary · 01/10/2012 20:13

Reckon he runs off to fight in the War of Independence and leaves Sybil in a right old pickle and she comes home and he dies. And no, I hadn't noticed her wig. I thought she was looking lovely...

bossboggle · 01/10/2012 20:15

I LOVE Downton!! It is my time to relax!!!! Totally enjoyed the scene where the oven broke down and they decided to have a cold food buffet - anywhere in the house!! The look on the Dowager's face was quite exquisite!! A brilliant programme all round!!

GeorginaWorsley · 01/10/2012 20:16

Mary could be infertile due to catching something from the Turk that dies in her bed.Grin

Chubfuddler · 01/10/2012 20:16

I don't get the Strallen antipathy because they were all for it in 1914. What's changed? Nothing except her prospects have got even worse.

I think it's mid 1920. It's annoyed me, it just seems like a glaring plot error.

ppeatfruit · 01/10/2012 21:08

I reckon that Downton Place (esp. the front view) was a painting a bit difficult to move into then!! Lucky the money was accepted by Mathew. Yup the baddie newspaperman is deffo involved in Vera's death. I like Bates too.
