Any big Downton fans out there who can tell me what happened in the very last episode of series 2 and also the Xmas special? Tryin to get ready for the new series on Sunday but is there anything else I missed? (apart from Lady Mary and Matthew getting together that is)

He definitely loves her. I thought he looked unwell at the altar too. I did wonder for a moment if Edith would go and live in the attic in her wedding dress.

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2012 22:32

Bates cell mate had planted something in his bunk but bares was tipped off before the guards arrived to inspect.

Mollydoggerson · 30/09/2012 22:33

Bates was being set up, he was tipped off, found the incriminating evidence and hid it, but the animosity is now at fever levels with the cell mate. Cue a murder......or a fight.....

Mollydoggerson · 30/09/2012 22:34

Her wedding dress was beautiful, wasn't it?

Maybe Edith will start helping Isobel with the fallen women. Maybe Edith will take on Ethel's little boy.

What about Doctor Boo boo, giving away the helpful hints to Carson.

What is Tom running from?

Chubfuddler · 30/09/2012 22:45

I note with amusement that Tom seems to have been rather tamed - dinner suit, drawing back from strallens conversational steer towards politics, in fact he was sat so quietly and conventionally at the discussion pre picnic I didn't even realise he was there.

Did they pack MacLaine off in the last ep? I don't remember her leaving.

And I can't understand why if they own that house they planned to call Downton place they didn't just sell that.

Mollydoggerson · 30/09/2012 22:45

oh yes, Matthew is so lazy, he couldn't even put the paper down to go out and speak to Mosley, when he thought Mosley needed him.

How lucky he is. That poor young man saved him from death in the war, he inherits a fortune and marries Lady Mary. Lucky guy.

Animation · 30/09/2012 22:53

Aahhh I knew Strallen wasn't right - despite it all moving fast last week!! Is he just feeble and weak - what is the matter with him?

Really felt for Edith there - poor love when she was curled up on her bed with her mum. Sad

SoupDragon · 30/09/2012 22:59

Poor, poor Edith :(

Dozer · 30/09/2012 23:03

Poor Edith.

The highlight of the Lavinia's father's cash/marital dispute storyline was Matthew's blue stripy tie/linen shirt combo.

Mollydoggerson · 30/09/2012 23:10

Strallan looked perfectly jaunty while off on the joyride to Downton place.

Mollydoggerson · 30/09/2012 23:10

Mary has lost so much weight.

CheerfulYank · 30/09/2012 23:11

I hate being an American so much right now; I can't watch ANYTHING EVER.

What in the world is happening?

ggirl · 30/09/2012 23:18

yes lady mary has lost wt
she was stunning in the last series..not so much this series

BustersOfDoom · 30/09/2012 23:18

Wouldn't surprise me if Strallen and Edith do a Michelle and Lofty (Eastenders, years back) in a couple of weeks and sneak off to get married quietly in a registry office somewhere once he's overcome whatever vapours he had at the altar. What a cad though, poor Edith.

hellymelly · 30/09/2012 23:20

I agree Strallen storyline very silly. There were hardly any young men left after WW1, The family would have realised she would end up an old maid and be bloody glad of Strallen. She is ancient to be unmarried for her class in 1920. And he would never have fled at the alter like a teenage girl. All very annoying. Lovely dress too, what a waste.
Are we supposed to think Bates is guilty now? They seem to be putting a different spin on him.

TapirBackRider · 30/09/2012 23:28

I like how the proof that Bates's innocence is hidden in the description of Mrs Bates - that whole "halo around her in the rain" thing was used in an Agatha Christie story of a poisoning, and was proof that the person was poisoned/had poisoned themselves before the 'guilty' party could have done it.

JustSpiro · 30/09/2012 23:32

How old are Edith et al supposed to be?

BustersOfDoom · 30/09/2012 23:33

Ooooh Tapir I remember that one! The old lady was poisoned with phosphorous if I remember correctly and she glowed before she died! Can't wait for next week.....

TapirBackRider · 30/09/2012 23:35

Busters Also the fingernails thing!

Mrs Hughes has cancer - and is now hiding it from everyone (judging by her reaction at the end)

Next week is going to be very interesting!

newplan · 30/09/2012 23:36

I reckon it will be proven that Vera was planning to poison Bates and the pies got mixed up Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/09/2012 23:37

He wouldn't have jilted her at the altar like that. Absolutely not.

I do want Bates to be proven innocent. I believe in him.
