Well that was cheery.

I'm sure I've said this before, in fact I probably say it every week but this is the best written, best acted, best produced drama - moving, real, epic, painful, funny - just fabulous.

Nancy66 · 29/08/2012 20:22

...i didn't come away thinking he was right all along and the stepmum was evil.

I think she was manipulative and insensitive but I still think the poisoning and dog killing was all part of his mental illness

BunnyLebowski · 30/08/2012 11:28

Just watched. I didn't like it Sad.

Looks like they're diminishing in quality as the series proceeds.

Arse.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 11:31

It was good. A bit darker and unresolved. The teenage boy was very, very good.

(But I did say to dh he is to re-marry someone very nice.)

BunnyLebowski · 30/08/2012 11:36

His acting was very good Marsha but his accent was all over the bleeding place. It detracted so much from the performance.

John Bishop might as well have had a woodpecker pecking his head.

Sheridan Smith was hammy and unconvincing. Like a Claire's Accessories version of Kathy Bates in Misery.

So disappointing.

Nancy66 · 30/08/2012 11:41

I've told DP that if he shacks up with someone else within two years of me pegging it I will come back and haunt him.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 11:43

I said someone we know was ok. I know she really likes my dc.

Ah I didn't notice the accent. I was impressed by the eyebrows however.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 11:44

lol at Claire's Accessories version. I don't know who she is. Probably helps!

BunnyLebowski · 30/08/2012 21:45

His eyebrows are amazing. He is a competent watchable actor.

Definitely the best thing in a weak episode.

rocket74 · 30/08/2012 21:54

I thought society had moved on from the same old 'evil stepmother' shit.
I've loved the other two episodes - but having been a SM (well I still am!!) - there seems no alternative in films, books or television still.
Bit tired of it. I guess it was a bit open ended still and she was just tormenting him? Thats what I hope anyway!

BunnyLebowski · 30/08/2012 22:08

I can understand your disdain rocket. The 'wicked' stepmother is a much played-out trope. Quite lazy if you ask me.

I thought this series might rise above such clichés.

But Jimmy McGovern is a old-fashioned mature writer and maybe that's reflected in his new work.

edam · 30/08/2012 22:54

If we are going to abandon all stories that have been done before, we'd have no books, no film, no TV, no nothing. Should Shakespeare not have bothered with Anthony and Cleopatra because it was an existing story? Should dramatists avoid lovers being parted because it's been done before?

MurielTheActor · 31/08/2012 09:39

I think what Jimmy McGovern did was rather smart. He took the 'much played-out trope' and bent it out of shape. Leaving us with the varying possibilities that she was evil and he was mad, or she wasn't and he was, or she was and he wasn't or neither of them were played into the central idea behind the series, which I assume is to look at how hard it is to judge a criminal act when there are so many stories involved.
There's a clue in the name Wink

MarshaBrady · 31/08/2012 09:41

I don't mind that he did that because the emphasis was on the boy and the boy was really good. Felt it brought enough of something new the idea.

I really loved the first with Sean Bean the most, need to watch the second one properly.

They are very good dramas, been a while since I've seen something like that on tv.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 04/09/2012 12:19

Just to prep you the nice young boy is back on tonight. With Anna Maxwell Martin.

adeucalione · 04/09/2012 12:30

Yes seems that tonight's is a follow on from last week. Looking forward to it.

MarshaBrady · 04/09/2012 12:33

Excellent, thanks

ClaraDeLaNoche · 04/09/2012 21:15

WTAF. I had hoped he would get treatment, be released, reunited with John Bishop and successfully oust Sheridan.

im hooked on this weeks but missed the start so dont really know whats going on, i came on here to get an update!

Lottapianos · 04/09/2012 21:44

OMG I feel physically sick. What a horrible scene Sad

ClaraDeLaNoche · 04/09/2012 21:47

Just awful. I always wish there was a warning for things like this.

OP posts:
colleysmill · 04/09/2012 21:48

I honestly don't think I can watch these anymore. It really seems to make me feel unsettled and a bit like the emotion and joy of life has been sucked out of me.

Lottapianos · 04/09/2012 21:51

Me too Clara Sad I almost switched it off but just felt compelled to keep watching. I feel heartbroken for any rape survivors watching. There was an equally horrendous rape scene in the last series.

I hope she murders both of them Angry

RagingDull · 04/09/2012 21:57

bloody hell.....i love jimmy mcgovern but this is grim. ive missed all the others.

im so glad she got off. she deserved to get off.

Lottapianos · 04/09/2012 22:00

That was so bloody horrible. Awful wooden acting from John Bishop which was quite unsettling in its own way.

RagingDull, the first one in the series with Sean Bean was amazing, I've been thinking about it ever since. I've never rated him as an actor but he was fab in this. Ditto the second episode with Olivia Colman in but also very very grim.
