Did anyone watch it? I thought it was very interesting and it certainly rang a lot of bells for me as a university educated child of working class parents / grandparents. I think it is a very thought provoking programme. Looking forward to next week...

I did, thought it was lovely, really nicely done, he is great. I am also first uni graduatrr ever in my mostly army (not officers or anything, so I guess qualifies as working class) family. I am also an art graduate, so it all rings bells for me, I am looking forward to next week too, as it is just down the road from me, I often go to Tunbridge wells to nose around the pretty but totally fucking pointless shops wishing I had the cash to live there, then realising even if I had the cash to live there, I couldn't actually afford to live there, IYSWIM?

Sometimes I wonder if they need to create some other class - like one inbetween working and middle...something like 'bit common but went to uni'..

Still, really liked his tapestries, thought they were beautiful.

Cromwell44 · 05/06/2012 23:29

I just caught the end of it so am now watching on C4+1. I'm finding it quite compulsive and particular admired him calling the middle classes/society's sneering at WC taste. Also he's aware of his WC background but operates in a very middhe class environment of modern art.
I'm from a similar background and education to you OP and it's certainly striking a cord with me.
Can't wait for the middle classes next week :o

redmayneslips · 05/06/2012 23:38

ooh so glad you agreed with me. I thought he dealt with it all very honestly and humbly and openly. So much of what he said / observed made SO much sense to me, right down to identifying my 'snobbish' distancing myself from things like a front room full of 'knick knacks' (my parents have a watered down version but my grandparents had the whole nine yards!)

missmakesstuff, funnily enough I come from a fine arts background too :-)

Have recorded it as i was exhausted and went to bed instead. But I am looking forward to seeing it. We live in TW and I know several people who were filmed for next week's episode so will be fun (?) to watch!

streakybacon · 06/06/2012 07:12

Oh I love Grayson! I saw him give a talk last year and there was so much love for him - he's hugely popular and deservedly so because he's so open and honest and intelligent. He takes the mickey out of the art world and he's loved all the more for not toeinig the line.

Didn't see the programme but it's on series record so we can all watch it together later Grin.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/06/2012 07:19

Have recorded it as it was filmed in Sunderland. Looking forward to watching.

sue52 · 06/06/2012 18:04

It was so interesting to watch. It made me view people with tatoos in a new light. The tapestry was beautiful. Next weeks program is from my neck of the woods and my "class" so I'll be watching and cringing at the same time.

missmakesstuff · 07/06/2012 00:17

Lots of us from Kent then! Will be watching next week, as long as I am not too busy dusting my every so ironic 'nicknacs'!

bellabelly · 07/06/2012 00:21

Another fan of GP here - I found his programme really moving last night because it made me see my grandparents' nick-nacks in a totally different light. Am very near Tunbridge Wells and just worry that next week's MC TW prog will have me cringing at my own snobbery...

bellabelly · 07/06/2012 00:22

PS He is very charismatic, isn't he? I don't normally like to listen to artists banging on about their work but I could listen to GP for hours and hours.

streakybacon · 07/06/2012 07:05

Watched it last night. He is lovely, isn't he? I loved how non-judgemental he was about people's choices, and that he admitted to having learned something from them on a personal level. Not many people have that ability these days, I reckon, and certainly most artists are too full of their own self-importance to share his attitude.

PanicMode · 07/06/2012 08:50

Completely agree with streaky - I was expecting it to be full of artistic nonsense, but he just seemed very interested in everyone as a person, and in a completely non-judgemental way. And although I couldn't have one of those tapestries in my house, I thought they were very clever.

Kveta · 07/06/2012 08:54

ooh, I wanted to see this, will have to look it up on 4OD I think. he always comes across well on TV.

chickensaresafehere · 07/06/2012 15:23

Fantastic tapestry, fascinating programme too.Grayson Perry is greatGrin

KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/06/2012 21:25

Just watched. Blown away by his portrayal of my city. Which is much maligned usually. He was so interested in everyone.

gypsyfloss · 08/06/2012 21:32

Just watched this on 4OD. I thought it was very insightful; especially about the nick-nacks.

We have a running joke with my parents that as soon as they've pegged it , there'll be a skip outside and everything will go straight in, no prisoners. It's made me think about throwing all their dreams and memories away.

Oh bollocks , I'm going to end up re-homing world of Capo di monte figurines and seashell decorated picture frames from the Isle of Wight :)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 08/06/2012 21:50

Lots and lots of dusting!

redmayneslips · 12/06/2012 23:04

Anyone watch it this evening?
Brilliant again (though I was inwardly cringing every time I saw something we have here in the house being scrutinised!)

That's kings hill place was a bit too stepford wives for me though

I think he is SO insightful

Can't wait for next weeks upper classes, I bet their houses are decrepit

OP posts:
plus3 · 12/06/2012 23:05

Loved it - agree about the kingshill's place.

nymets · 12/06/2012 23:05

kings hill was awful, all fur coat an no knickers, bit footballers wives

i think the upper class one will be the best

tapestries are fab aren't they

sue52 · 13/06/2012 09:57

DD has friends who live in Kings Hill. It does look a bit like a set from the film The Trueman Show. It can't be that middle class though as there is an Asda in the middle of it.

Love Grayson Perry and would like to see more of him on T.V.

TheCrackFox · 13/06/2012 10:07

Watched it last night and really enjoyed it. Grayson should be on the TV more as he us such a natural.

King's Hill was very Stepfordy.

flibbertigibbert · 13/06/2012 19:00

Just watched this on Sky plus. Found it really interesting - especially Kings Hill. Agree with the poster who said there should be something between working and middle class - the women in Kings Hill didn't really seem to fit into MC IMO. Didn't really agree with the guy who said he was becoming upper MC because of his income enabling him to buy more - the upper MC people I know aren't too fussed by showy things.

gypsyfloss · 16/06/2012 20:41

Just watching this on catch-up and am loving it again. I've been reading Kate Fox's 'Watching the English' so it was interesting to see her interviewed. The most telling comments for me were the references to the King's Hill lot needing to show that they had earned lots of money and the T/Wells wanting to show that they were replete with culture and taste.

I agree with the comments above that Grayson Perry should do more tv - he is fanastic and informative. I would quite happily read a book of this series.
