Did anyone watch it? I thought it was very interesting and it certainly rang a lot of bells for me as a university educated child of working class parents / grandparents. I think it is a very thought provoking programme. Looking forward to next week...

Just caught this on 4OD... really interesting, and a lot of food for thought.

PanicMode, I'm really curious what your friends who were on there had to say about their representation...? How accurately do you think they were portrayed? I know things often get twisted, was it badly mangled in this case? PM me if you'd rather not air things publically.

I would also be interested in a book about this, esp something that goes into more detail about the lower middle class, which is where I think I fit (those shown on the programme were all upper middle class to my eyes)

I'm also curious where people think pop/tv/sports stars fit in the hierarchy...? Upper classes? Or a class all their own?

He kept asking/implying the question "where does brittish taste come from" but doesn't explicately answer it, except in the implication that each "tribe" makes their own rules to be followed, and has their own trend setters... does this seem to match other's interpretation?

I think so too gypsyfloss. There was some interesting camera lingering (like on the first woman with her garish hair, tan and huge necklace who said 'we don't do bling') that invited viewer to make comment which had been absent in the previous episodes.
But he is a wonderful combination of offering thought provoking ideas and presenting them in a very entertaining manner and of course producing fantastic art that makes you see the world slightly differently.

MrsMuddyPuddles - I think they were happy. The lady who hosted the dinner party was quite relieved because she said they were filming for about 4 hours, and they'd all had quite a lot of wine by the end, so she'd been worried about what they were going to say!! Amanda's house has been discussed in lots of detail in the school playground - but mostly in a 'wow, what a fab house' sort of way. I think both of them had researched the production company before they agreed to go ahead, and neither felt that it had misrepresented them at all.

If you want a fantastic book about class, then Kate Fox's Watching the English is fascinating. (She was in the programme about TW).

Class, in my opinion, is not about money at all, so footballers may have lots of money, but they won't suddenly become middle or upper class just because of their income levels. At my school, there was one (fabulously wealthy) child whose parents were 'in showbusiness'. She didn't have the 'right' accent, and parents were a bit dismissive of the family as being 'not quite our sort, dear'. I'm not sure it would be acknowledged in quite the same way nowadays, but there is definitely a distinction between old and new money, and as Kate Fox said in the programme, there are SO many nuances and judgements that we make about where people 'fit', without even realising that we are doing it, and from a very young age.

Thanks for that, panic Thanks

Second the recommendation about Kate Fox's book. Although I do find myself reading it and checking what I do and say and therefore which group I belong to! I'm not from here so I like to think I can pick and choose my class according to whim:)

I've only just found this thread. I thought it was a fantastic and interesting series too. The upper class people live in my area and I sort of know one and have seen both the others around, very eccentric! I know it wouldn't fit in the structure but when I watched the last one I thought that footballers and show biz people really are the new upper class - the equivelant of the c18 people who were loaded and went shopping for their house contents ont eh grand tour, I would have loved to see GP talking to them.

Just coming back to this thread... have just been up the road to see the tapestries - the Victoria Miro gallery is near my office. They are absolutely brilliant, could spend even more time than we did, so much to see in each one, so many little details that weren't obvious from the show. I can thoroughly recommend it.
