Did anyone watch it? I thought it was very interesting and it certainly rang a lot of bells for me as a university educated child of working class parents / grandparents. I think it is a very thought provoking programme. Looking forward to next week...

I really fancy a trip up to London to see the tapestries now. I'd love to go when it was really quiet and I could spend ages poring over them. I wonder if they'd let me stroke them Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/06/2012 17:11

just watched the 2nd one on 4 od -he is amazingly good.

101handbags · 18/06/2012 09:53

gypsyfloss - thank you so much for mentioning they are on display in London. I just looked it up and they are on display (for free) about 5 minutes walk from my office, I can't believe my luck. I agree they are just fabulous. I love this show. Can't wait fot the upper classes.

gypsyfloss · 18/06/2012 14:11

Envy 101handbags for being able to visit them easily. I hope you have a wonderful time :)

101handbags · 18/06/2012 15:42

Thank you! I am going to wait until I've seen the third programme before I go.

hotsauce · 18/06/2012 18:38

I watched this last week. I live in Kent and honestly the women from King's Hill are completely deluded. They live on a big, ugly housing estate. It has no character at all, feels completely false and has always reminded me of Toy Town.

When is it on again?

gypsyfloss · 19/06/2012 09:47

101handbags Have convinced Dh that we should go and see them, unfortunately it's a matter of getting the time. I'd prefer to go during the week as I reckon it could be very hectic on a Sat and I really do want time to stare at them. They're only there till the 11th Aug though :(

hotsauce This Thursday I think .

redmayneslips · 19/06/2012 23:04

Fantastic series, I really enjoyed it, sad it's over now. Wouldn't it be great to see more programmes like this? Why so few good arts programmes? He is FAB! I would LOVE to see the actual tapestries (but sadly not in UK)

I also love Grayson and I'm looking forward to watching g this series when I have time. I refer to myself as "mixed class" which I think des rubes the phenomenon of being middle class from working class parents etc

springydaffs · 19/06/2012 23:56

I have hugely enjoyed this. Don't you just love him? How he can get away with dressing the way he does and have people accept him is a total art.

I'm also an arts graduate from a (very) working class background, so I appreciate his take on class taste. I felt sorry for the woman who bought the show home and everything in it. I think she was embarrassed but I don't think she needed to be.

Tonight's programme was very different imo. The tapestries were very aggressive and I think his antipathy towards the upper classes came through - I felt uncomfortable about the toffs going to look at it when they were being sneered at. Or maybe I'm projecting...

Davros · 20/06/2012 08:06

I will definitely go to see the tapestries. I went to see the walthamstow tapestry (with lots of other thi gs) and the xhibition he curated at the British museum AND I have a GP silk scarf. Do I get the prize for. I gets GP fan on MN?!!

Davros · 20/06/2012 08:07

Eric! Biggest GP fan. Stupid phone

PanicMode · 20/06/2012 08:10

I thought last night's programme was the least successful to be honest - I really enjoyed the other ones, but I thought he was floundering a bit last night. The final tapestry wasn't really upper class taste - although it did follow his Hogarth line I suppose.

I didn't think it was particularly aggressive - more dismissive or even pitying (?) of the 'noblesse oblige' element of why upper class taste is as it is....which I think is a big part of these families trying to hold onto the family estates.

I think I fall between last week and this week - I live in TW but didn't really connect with the design elements of the houses, although I did see myself in the NCT group -with all of the angst about feeding/pesticides etc! However, my parents' life is more like last night's programme, and my house certainly reflects the passing things down and making do (with old curtains and clothes - nothing wrong with them!). I went to private school - had the whole ponies, house parties and upper class ritual associated with all of that, but my children are being educated by the state (first ones in the family for a very long time - shock, horror), albeit in a 'naice' town and so will have a far more middle class upbringing......

Such an interesting series though - I really hope he does more programmes.

gypsyfloss · 20/06/2012 08:55

I felt quite sorry for Rollo having his head on the stag being savaged although I thought he stood up for himself by commenting that the stag will often rise up. I was also a bit appalled by the ex Bill actress changing her house so much but then her comment about never being able to paint their own front door brought me up short.

I felt that GP wasn't as unbiased in his depictions this time but that didn't spoil what has been a brilliant series. I feel like I've been educated & can't wait to see them.

BeehavingBaby · 20/06/2012 17:53

Lovely but nearly had to stab myself in the ears to avoid that Rosetta Stone advert. Hope for your sake it was just a 4od phenomenon.

gypsyfloss · 20/06/2012 18:31

I don't get any ads when I watch it on the iPad . Weird.

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/06/2012 18:33

the joy of the iPad !

gypsyfloss · 20/06/2012 18:41

Is it an iPad thing then? I love it even more now :)
