Anyone watching? I think Jimmy is on a hiding to nothing trying to get a welfare friendly product to compete with cheap meat.

This may be a very silly question, I apologise for my lack of info on this subject, but if we were to eat more rose veal, would this then increase the demand and help stop the waste of these animals?

difficultpickle · 30/05/2012 19:21

Yes. Eating rose veal means those calves will live to 7-8 months and then be killed for meat rather than being shot and burned when they are 24-48 hours old.

PrinceWilliamaflip · 31/05/2012 20:15

Just wanted to say that not all male calves born in the dairy industry are shot at birth - we raise them for beef and they go off at 30 months for meat - so not all farmers shoot new-born calves.

Also quite a few farmers are now using sexed semen so that they only have female calves born.

Mirage · 31/05/2012 20:39

I wanted to add that not all calves are taken away at birth either. The colostrum rich milk provided after the cow has calved cannot go into the milk to be sold,so there is no sense in removing a calf and having to bottle feed it whilst chucking the milk the cow is producing away.

ppeatfruit · 01/06/2012 13:05

bisjo I refuse to buy anything but organic products (I don't shop in Txxxx if I can help it though 'cos I hate the thought of the heiress).

I admire Jimmy, Jamie and H.F.W.; it's great that there are some people with morals and a public voice who can expose Tesxxs and the people who only care about "cheap' food (even when they could afford to spend more on it). Sad

bronze · 01/06/2012 18:08

It's the same deal with chickens though. You get people buying eggs who don't realise they are getting males killed.
It is why I have more respect for vegans than I do for vegetarians who claim
It's for anti cruelty reasons.
It's really hard to buy rose veal. It would be a great campaign for jimmy to do (get Janet street porter on board) because people will try it if they can get it. At the moment we're in the wrong kind of cycle.

ppeatfruit · 02/06/2012 10:38

IMO as long as the animal has not lived miserably shut away then death is a fact of life. My veggie mum thinks all animals should live for ever! tell the eagle or the lion that!

BigBoPeep · 05/06/2012 20:18

You can stop the calves being shot at birth merely by creating demand for their meat. This does NOT have to be veal (as pretty much the entire media seems to be clinging to right now?) they make very good beef. Most black and white bull calves live to at least 12 months as 'bull beef' thesedays, it hasn't extended to jerseys because they are smaller, but the beef is out there - you just have to look for it. Buy enough of it and it will become freely available.

difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 21:12

Anyone watching tonight? Sausages. Not sure I want to watch to find out the contents of cheap sausages!

OP posts:
difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 21:13

Sad looking pigs Sad

difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 21:24

Offal sausages? Hmm

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 05/06/2012 21:37

'shudders' at what goes in cheap sausages

molepom · 05/06/2012 21:41

What I dont understand is...

Jimmy has gone into Tesco factories, they know what's he's trying to do and what his meat will be made off, invited him to look around with a film crew but then, stop him from filming the meat THEY use...

what the hell are they hiding?

difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 21:47

I reckon Tesco signed up to this programme before their poor results came out thinking they were invincible. Poor results proved they weren't and now they are back tracking. They seem even less interested this week than they were last week.

OP posts:
molepom · 05/06/2012 21:54

Agreed, but that still doesnt really make any sense as to why they reacted the way they did to Jimmy once he was actually INSIDE the factory.

difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 21:58

Tesco must hate this programme. I always buy free range at least and free range organic if I can. I'd rather eat less meat than eat animals treated like that.

OP posts:
difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 22:05

Sausages are on sale here

This programme really makes me angry - Tescos really makes me angry.

You could see they weren't prepared really to go into those meetings with an open mind. Twice Jimmy proved on a taste test that customers preferred his sausages, but they kept changing the goal posts.

The thing that really makes me angry is that they will put sugar, water, rusk and all sorts of shit into their sausages...like those things aren't disgusting, and talk about customer reactions to heart and tongue. They could put all of their marketing power and sway into educational campaigns about rose veal, and offal sausages but they weren't prepared to, in anyway.

And then the people on the panel pissed me off. They chose Jimmy's sausages in a blind test! Yet they get all squeamish when they find out what's in them..Again, what's so fucking healthy about sugar and rusk? How many of those people smoked and drank?? And like Jimmy said - eat dodgy meat off the back of a truck! The majority of people will put ALL sorts of crap into their bodies happily. Yet then turn their nose up a healthy, nutritious, free range, happy-fucking-pig meat. God, it makes me so mad!

Tesco could do this if they wanted but they won't. Like they did with the veal last week - oh no, we don't do veal because our customers won't like it but oh wait, what's this - German veal with worse welfare standards. Fucking hypocrites.

difficultpickle · 05/06/2012 22:10

Well at least they are selling his sausages so that's a positive. I won't be buying them though as I would never shop in Tescos.

OP posts:
bettybat · 05/06/2012 22:12

Bisjo I guess so...

But I'm with you. This Saturday at a farmer's market, I bought two steaks for what would be one in Marks and Spencers, and I learnt what skirt meat it. And it was delicious pan fried!

I love veal and would buy it if a) I could afford it and b) I could get hold of it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/06/2012 09:30

tbh not sure i would want to eat a testicle sausage.............

but also know prob eyes/ears and testicles go in the average sausage/meat pie and i eat them

bettybat · 06/06/2012 09:54

There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating heart, brain, testicles, cheek, ear or anything else cut from the animal. And I'd have thought that ground up and squeezed into a sausage makes it more palatable than an actual tongue laid out on the plate Wink

I just don't get it. People will happily eat things that have been bulked up with water, rusk and sugar - which is gross beyond belief - but will get squeamish about actual bona fide animal parts.

We have become way too removed from what it means to eat meat. We buy nicely packaged, nicely filleted chicken breasts and get grossed out by eating from the bone. It's absurd.

carmenelectra · 08/06/2012 00:28

I have been a veggie for many, many yrs but I do buy and cook meat for family who all eat meat. I watched tonights programme with interest and sadness.

I buy free range meat 98 percent of the time and organice when I can. I will never buy cheap pork again. I very rarely do but this has reinforced my beliefs.

I would sooner buy decent meat occasionally than regualrly get cheap shitam

The meat eaters who nearly vomitted at the thought of offal nEeded to get a grip. You are eating a dead animal.does it matter what bit?
