LGBTQ tv shows for kids and teens?

I think that children's programmes could be doing a lot more to educate kids about the LGBT community and their rights. Perhaps not even a series dedicated to it, maybe just a gay couple looking to foster in Tracy Beaker or something. There's nothing wrong with it at all, I think it's silly that children are only really taught about it during their teenage years, it's not difficult or upsetting to understand at all. Any thoughts?

My DD is tiny so we haven't got to the kids' tv stage yet, so I am quite surprised that no gay characters are featured. I disagree, however, that children's programmes should tackle issues of LGBT rights- I would rather just see gay characters getting on with the same issues heterosexuals face, ie showing children that homosexuality isn't anything other than normal.

That's a better way of putting it I suppose...

While I do agree with you, I'm sure I remember there was a furore when a programme did something like this (cbbc? not sure) a few years ago. Some parents seem to group it in with sex education and don't feel its appropriate Hmm Have recently discovered this at DD2s school when talk of sex education arose.

I know most of the teen programmes like Hollyoaks, Glee, Gossip Girl etc tackle these issues so I do think its surprising that it hasn't trickled down. Perhaps you should suggest this to the BBC, aren't they very big on equality etc?
