SUNDAY 29 JANUARY

Drama

Lewis

9:00pm - 11:00pm

ITV1 London

VIDEO Plus+: 9252
Subtitled, Widescreen, Audio-described

Dramatised by Stephen Churchett

It was never going to be an easy act to follow. The ghost of John Thaw looms large over this handsome Inspector Morse sequel. But between them, Kevin Whately as Lewis, now promoted to inspector, and a shrewd new sidekick in the shape of Laurence Fox, pick up his torch and run with it. It helps that they've got a good script, the kind of precision-tooled whodunnit that reminds you how maddening it is when Midsomer Murders or Taggart take up 90 minutes of your time for a payoff that doesn't quite add up. Here, a student is shot dead at a sleep laboratory and the story behind her killing has elaborate parallels with a certain Shakespeare play. Whately's weary everyman act works as well as ever and Fox looks like he could single-handedly make up the charisma deficit left by Thaw. Let's hope this one-off leads to a series.

i will be watching..got to remind myself that its not morse though, took me ages to get used to taggart, without taggart!

when lewis is leaving the airport at the begining look out for Morse red jaguar car that nearly runs him over, then it shows a woman driving it. It was going to be a man but he looked a bit too much like John Thaw so they changed it for a woman wearing dark glasses.

Do I dare watch this? I loved Morse and it's weird that he won't be there.

MarsOnLife · 29/01/2006 19:03

I loved Morse too, but I'm gonna give this a go.

Thanks RTKM

Mmm, quite enjoyed this, except for the over-acting mother. "Not my booooy, my beautiful boooy". I liked Hathaway. "I was too frivolous for the priesthood"

saltire · 30/01/2006 14:03

I enjoyed. I actually thought it was a whole series, not just one episode.

Cadbury · 30/01/2006 14:05

Enjoyed it. Will watch again if they gove it a series.

Anteater · 30/01/2006 14:08

Got the vote over the virgin queen, would watch a series.

Katemum · 30/01/2006 14:24

Do you know if it is repeated? My s*dding sky plus failed again.

Mercy · 30/01/2006 15:14

I missed it too, damn - I LOVE Morse. Did it have all the same characters? Was it really any good?

hana · 30/01/2006 15:24

yes, was pretty good
same formula as a morse
lots of morse references - someone driving the same car, the Endevour scholarship, the crossword puzzles etc etc
I think itv will do more but initially is a one off
