I notice they left off the very end of Mary's story as well - not that it was any happier than the rest

And sadly she was just one of thousands upon thousands of women whos babies were taken from them over decades

:(

dwpanxt · 22/01/2012 21:01

Hooray ! Roy Hudd as Mr Collet is a fantastic bit of casting.

Im so looking forward to next weeks programme.

lurkingaround · 22/01/2012 21:02

Proper sobbing here.

I meant a woman once who gave her baby up for adoption. Thought of her watching Mary. She was 16 when she got pregnant. Had no option. I asked her did she think of the baby often. She paused and replied "only every day". The pain. Must be horrendous.

Annunziata · 22/01/2012 21:02

What was the end, Lilka?

I think I may have just put both my daughters off having children. Oops.

Grockle · 22/01/2012 21:02

I struggled with Miranda in this. She's just... well, Miranda. It was all wrong! But lovely Sunday evening telly.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 22/01/2012 21:03

Barbaric Sad.

Lilka · 22/01/2012 21:04

Anunziata - In the book, Jenny Worth said she saw Mary on the news years later. She had gone half mad with grief, and kidnapped another woman's baby :( Got caught on the ferry to Ireland and sent to prison - although I think the court were not as harsh as they could of been, they took her loss into account IIRC

Just so horrible

lurkingaround · 22/01/2012 21:05

I think Miranda is well cast.

HarrietJones · 22/01/2012 21:06

Not sure if I can watch this every week. I'm sobbing too much.

Annunziata · 22/01/2012 21:06

That's just awful....that poor, poor girl :(

MissBetsyTrotwood · 22/01/2012 21:10

I think Miranda is well cast too. Vulnerable and comedic. Lovely.

EmmaBemma · 22/01/2012 21:11

LOVED this. was the first time i've seen it. my eyes are puffy slits from all the crying - the breech delivery was emotional enough, but then when Mary's baby was taken away, I just lost it. Touched a raw nerve for me, my mum had a baby girl adopted when she was 17 (only 5 years before having me with my dad). In her case there was a positive resolution - my sister traced her three years ago and they are in regular contact still, but it still breaks my heart to think of what she went through. Poor Mary.

EmmaBemma · 22/01/2012 21:13

I should say, in my mum's case adoption was voluntary, though she did feel that she had no other choice at the time.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 22/01/2012 21:14

Oh EmmaBemma now you've set me off again.

TartyMcFarty · 22/01/2012 21:14

I can't cope with Birdsong after that. Only so much trauma I can take tonight - tired and emotional.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 22/01/2012 21:16

I was in the very unfortunate position of being with a girl who had her baby removed by SS just after giving birth.
Aside from all the reasons why they removed the baby, I found it absolutely devastating.
She was discharged from the ward with leaking breasts, a swollen tummy and all the other symptoms of just having given birth . Except she was without her baby.
My DH is a police officer. He had to physically remove a baby from her mother ( by court order ) ,again just after delivery. He has witnessed some truly awful things in his career, but the only time he has had a sleepless tearful night ,was the night he came home from doing that. Sad
Poor , poor Mary .

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 22/01/2012 21:18

Tarty I can't concentrate on Birdsong either.
I'm very preoccupied now . With a heavy heart .

Raahh · 22/01/2012 21:22

oh NannySad

TunipTheVegemal · 22/01/2012 21:28
Sad
Moln · 22/01/2012 21:55

evidently cold heart here - didn't cry, not even close

did feel very sad for Mary though (i'm not that cold hearted), though when I heard the term 'catholic mother and baby home' it did fill my heart with fear for mary.

So, it's all based on actual characters then? Didn't realise that. I'm loving it btw

bigeyes · 22/01/2012 22:39

Oh nanny that'll be on my mind for days now, do you mean currently? That makes me feel all kinds of things....

I've found this compelling, the more I read on here too, the more I'm thinking I want to work with women and families in some sort of support/caring profession.

Oblomov · 22/01/2012 22:48

Loving it. Its all warm and fluffy and feel good factor. Just what sunday night tv should be. FAB. Virgil.
