Ooh thanks for that interesting historical nugget ppeat

  • I've got quite into history since having the DCs and finding out a bit about our family history - and also I think just from that sense of continuity with the past you get from raising the next generation Smile

I wonder if women's increasing interest in history is one of the main reasons for the "surprise" success of both "Call the Midwife" and "Downton Abbey" etc.
I think there's room for further growth in drama's from a female perspective Smile

< short cuts writing to BBC/ ITV with post on MN in lazy arsed way Grin >

Well Tange As you put 'surprise' in inverted commas you are also aware that everyone loves good, thoughtful well written, acted and directed drama whether historic, or not. I've always wondered why the telly powers - that - be put a sneer in their voices when talking about costume dramas. It's the BAD dramas they should be sneering at and sadly there are far too many of them!! Did you watch the Hour? It was a lost opportunity IMO and Upst. Downst. seems to be lacking something (good writing perhaps?).

But i understand your POV on history it seems to be more of a female thing esp. as we get older! Grin

Methe There's going to be 8 more HOORAY!!! I don't know when though Smile

ppeatfruit · 22/02/2012 13:08

Well I just googled C.T.M. and guess what? Heidi Thomas the writer also wrote Upst. Downst. !!!! But I can't believe she did it on her own 'cos she wrote Cranford too and that was much better than U.D. IMO so there must be a lot of input from others in U.D. IYSWIM!

sphil · 22/02/2012 17:10
