I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I didn't get around to reading the book now.

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 15/01/2012 21:09

caught the second half, sorry.

susiedaisy · 15/01/2012 21:10

The book is great, and the casting for chummy is fabGrin

diddl · 15/01/2012 21:11

Thought it was really good.

Conchita´s baby was so like the actor playing the father.

I guess they assumed it was dead so wouldn´t do anything with it, would they?

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2012 21:14

I just watched hussle and Minty turned up - then watched call the midwife and Minty pops up again!

have read the book, I heard the advert on the radio and heard Mirandas voice and worked out who she would play Grin

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2012 21:15

Yes the book is based on actual happenings Smile

susiedaisy · 15/01/2012 21:18

I think they had a belief that babies born before a certain gestation just wouldn't survive so there was no point in trying to revive them.

ElderberrySyrup · 15/01/2012 21:22

I think it was meant to be her inexperience - although she was told by the doctor she'd done well, she knew she actually had just been lucky.

DozyNosy · 15/01/2012 21:23

I've got it on record. Not sure if I should watch it as I'm 38wk PG and getting a bit nervous about birth etc. I managed to watch OBEM, but the all the births on that generally have a positive outcome, I've got a feeling that's not the case with this.
Should I watch it or is it going to scare me even more?

ElderberrySyrup · 15/01/2012 21:26

I don't think it should be that scary because pregnancies are so well monitored now compared to then, but later in the book there are some very, very sad stories, if you are hormonal anyway you will need a big box of tissues....

In the book Conchita is one of the last chapters, and Jennifer is more experienced

And book clearly describes Cochita expressing bm and feeding from the pipette thingy... and keeping the baby to her breast constantly, feeding every 30mins

Was a bit Hmm at shot of milk float driving off 2 seconds before seeing Conchita feeding the baby

I was a bit disappointed by Conchita. In the book it comes across as a really instinctive process of kangaroo care, but you didn't get that in the programme- and by the end the baby was in the big coach pram.

Although he wasn't warmed up, resuscitated, etc, ironically the fact that the cord wasn't cut because they thought he was dead (placenta comes out with baby, but not intact) may had helped him somewhat. Delayed clamping was unknown then.

dustlandfairytale · 15/01/2012 22:09

Sorry but I thought it was a load of rubbish.

Who wants to see face pulling at the sight and smell of Syphilis when you've just settle down on your sofa on a Sunday night. Have to admit it was quite good acting though. I nearly put my hand over my nose.

BrightnessFalls · 15/01/2012 22:18

The baby did better because it wasnt warmed up, I imagine.

I also could smell everything over the telly. I was boaking Smile

I really enjoyed it, but it was deffo a sanitised version of the book - not as gory at all! I vividly remember the description of Conchitas baby being placed in a bowl, along with lots of blood/gore, and it was only when Jennifer saw a little bubble in the blood that she realised the baby was alive. And yes, Conchita put the baby straight between her breasts and kept him there for 3 months. I think as these are actual true stories and not fiction, they should have been portrayed as such and not so sanitised. But its Sunday night BBC I suppose.

SebastionTheCrab · 15/01/2012 22:39

Have just finished watching on BBC iplayer. I thought it was wonderful and it made me really emotional.
I've still yet to read the book though so I've nothing to compare it with.
Looking forward to next weeks installment.

What had the father been in before? His face is very familiar.
