libertybodice · 29/01/2012 21:15

oh what an incredibly moving episode

cutteduppear · 29/01/2012 21:15

Yes I saw the dad taking the baby in to see the midwives at the end, very sweet - but what did he say to mum upon seeing baby for the first time?

Annunziata · 29/01/2012 21:16

Something along the lines of that he didn't know much about babies but this was the most beautiful baby he'd ever seen. And then asked what his name was, and the mother said he could name him, so he picked Edward, because it was a good family name.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 29/01/2012 21:17

I need a glass of wine after that .
Was trying to have a tee total eve.

PinkyCheesy · 29/01/2012 21:31

I reckon Ted knew he wasnt able to have children so as soon as he suspected wife was pg knew it wasn't his. But she loved him by then so he wanted to make the best of it Smile lovely man anyway

Brilliant series
Also recommend the Monica Dickens books 'one pair of hands', 'one pair of feet' and 'my turn to make the tea'

cutteduppear · 29/01/2012 21:36

Funnily enough, I've been present at two births when the baby came out unexpectedly mixed race. The first time the mum didn't expect it either, the second time, the mum knew and I didn't!

With the time when the mum didn't know, it took about an hour for the baby to really colour up properly before we could be sure that her dad wasn't who we'd thought it was. Baby was very purple at first, as they all are.

All ended happily anyway, as the real dad was thrilled and was very proud of his daughter!

ThePsychicSatsuma · 29/01/2012 21:38

saw it for the first time tonight - it's lovely! poor old Joe. Wish I had it in me to be a nurse/ carer.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 29/01/2012 21:39

Gosh, what a sob-fest it was tonight. Joe's story was heartbreaking.

I love watching this cos my mum would have been 15 in 1957, living not that far from Poplar, and the story of the women on the programme was very much her mother's story (my mum used to joke that every time my grandad came home on leave my grandmother got pregnant again). I'm also so enthralled by how much the NHS changed ordinary men and women's lives - I hope David Cameron is watching!

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 29/01/2012 21:46

Thepsychic it has it's rewards.
But it can be very emotionally draining .
I really take people into my heart when I nurse them ( and iv never been able to distance myself .)
I wish I had got out into the community years ago , because I can't now due to budget cuts ( no jobs ) , and I can't carry on being ward based Sad as it's so intense .

HarriettJones · 29/01/2012 21:50

I didn't cry at all tonight. I was surprised.

TerraNotSoFirma · 29/01/2012 21:57

I Have just finished the book, Did not realise there was a tv show until turned to the back cover and saw Miranda (agree, perfect casting)

Has Mrs Jenkins been featured yet? How many episodes have I missed?

pranma · 29/01/2012 22:10

It is so evocative-I was 13 in 1957 and living in a NE pit village not East end of London but the clothes and the general feel of the time is so true to life.

ThePinkPussycat · 29/01/2012 22:19

What utter sentimental tosh! I absolutely loved it Grin

(latecomer to the series and to tonight's programme)

jollyoldstnickschick · 29/01/2012 22:21

When I had ds2 by emcs as I came round from the anaesthetic the obstetrician said to me Mrs xxxxxx I presume both your children have the same parentage??
'OH GOD IS MY BABY BLACK??' i yelled ........the obs looked at dh with real worry (dh is a 6'2 well built ex para who is white) .......dh said he was sorely tempted to look shocked but explained that I didnt know who my father was and one 'suspect' was a mixed race bloke and it had played on my mind thanks to my evil nanna that I was going to have a black baby.

** the question of parentage came about because there was a large weight and length difference that had neccesitated the first cs.

CakeMixture · 29/01/2012 22:26

Who the heck is James? - I dont remember him featuring in Jennifer Worths books (I have read 2 of them)
I know its picky but I hate when TV and films deviate from the perfectly good origonal story!!!!!

Its a while since I read them though so my memory could be faulty!!!

susiedaisy · 29/01/2012 22:55

Isn't James the chap she marries ?
