X Factor: Is Misha B Too Black to Win?

An interesting article. I agree with Cat. Do you?

Cat McshaneDocumentary Filmmaker and Journalist

This weekend is the semi-final of the X Factor, and while there's one contestant standing head and shoulders above the others, if I were a betting lady, I'd put money on Misha B being in the bottom two again. Britain, it seems, has a problem voting for the best act, and I'm calling it racist.

Misha B is the blackest contestant the competition has had, and the Britain that votes for X Factor is scared of black culture.

We've gone a bit David Starkey, who managed to write off the biggest civil uprising this country has seen for nearly 30 years, the summer riots, by blaming black culture. "The whites have become black," he croaked out on Newsnight in the aftermath. "A particular sort of violent, destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion."

But Misha B seems to be proud of her heritage and acknowledges her musical influences, which are rooted in black culture. Witness her last week taking the ultimate white girl's party anthem Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, sticking a rap in the middle of it and using a choreography that nods to Rihanna's Rude Boy.

But while plenty of people around the UK were cheering Misha B on, they weren't the people picking up the phones, who voted through all-round nice girls Little Mix, inoffensive Liverpudlian Marcus Collins and reinstated teenager Amelia Lily. This left Manchester-born Misha B singing for survival for the third time out of the last four weeks, needing to be saved by the judges again.

As Gary Barlow stated back in mid-November, "Of all the contestants we have on this show, the first person any record producer would sign up is Misha B", and yet there she was in a sing-off with Janet Devlin, someone who had forgotten the words to her first song, and for weeks had the haunted look of someone with a severe stomach complaint.

There have been black female winners of the X Factor. Leona Lewis won over audiences with her incredible voice and shy personality in 2006, while Alexandra Burke pulled off that magical combination of being the act boys fancied and that other women wanted to be friends with in 2008. These were deserved winners, but they didn't upset the apple cart. They wore beautiful dresses, they sang ballads, they played the game and walked away with the prize.

But Misha B is too out there for the X Factor audience to vote for.

She's working class, confident, even cocky, drawing comparisons with Tina Turner, Grace Jones and Missy Elliot, some of the world's most powerful black women.

At a time when black and Asian women are still, and increasingly, bleaching their skin lighter, and celebrities like Beyonce get into trouble for straightening their hair and dyeing it blonde, Misha B, afro styled differently each week, is recognisably black.

Britain doesn't know what to do with her. Men can't look after her and women who would've warmed to her got put off when judges Tulisa and Louis announced she was a bully, which is ironic when you're destroying someone's chance at success live on television.

As Misha B commented this week, "I understand how people think and how as human beings they are heavily influenced by people's comments. Of course it is going to damage my chances of winning the show."

Apart from Burke and Lewis, none of the other (all white, all male) winners since the series started in 2004 have had any comparable success. Instead, runners-up, like One Direction or Olly Murs, have taken their year's spotlight. But will Misha B even make it to the final?

This week, there was an insight into what X Factor bosses think will happen. They replaced Misha B with newly reinstated contestant Amelia Lily at the end of the Marks and Spencer Christmas advert all the finalists appear in. And this Saturday's show is expected to include a sob story about teenage Amelia's severe diabetes, always a vote-winner.

If Sunday does see Misha B leave, the biggest loser will be us, for not being able to reward a truly amazing talent with the prize she deserves, and claim her for ourselves. But it won't be the worst thing in the world for her. It'll prove that hard work and talent is not always the key, and that hell is other people.

But let us be assured, this young lady has a big future, and when she no longer has to rely on appeasing bigots for votes, she can set about changing minds from a place of greater power.

You know I saw this crap over on the DS forum too...

You cannot make an argument to suit yourself. Misha is not progressing in the competition because she is not liked, it is not because she is black. The writer of that article glosses over the fact that 2 of the winners are black. In fact they are the only two winners to have continued success. Lets not forget JLS, Rebecca Fergeson, Zayn in 1D, Marcus...the list is endless...

Misha has not been liked since she started talking in a baby voice, refers to herself in the third person..People would be far better served finding racism where it actually exists then they can make a change rather than making up crap and diluting the instances where racism actually exists.

HairyBeaver · 02/12/2011 06:23

I dont like Misha because shes a knob, not because shes black.

I find her annoyingly cocky and if in her VT she mentions her mum abandoning her one more bloody time Xmas Angry

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 06:25

Agree with SBS.

I only saw the first few episodes invlovling the final tweleve before I moved abroad and I have no idea who is left in or out, but I never really rated MB anyway. I am only aware of her unpopularity as a person because of things I keep seeing on the internet. If she is still rapping halfway through all the songs then frankly, as with Cher Lloyd, most people find that style a bit tedious and one dimensional. Maybe that's why she's in the bottom two again.

There may not have been many black actual winners, but proportionately speaking there is an extremely high number of black/gay contestants who make the final twelve across the history of the programme as a whole (so certainly no prejudice on teh part of the mentors) and a pretty high number who make it quite far through the public votes as well. I see no racism or any in it whatsoever. The simple fact is that most black artists tend to sing in an RnB or other MOBO genre, which is always a niche market compared to bog-standard pop. Not many of the heavy rock types get through either - for the same reasons.

runningwilde · 02/12/2011 06:26

The only reason Misha won't win is because she is not liked as she comes across as a self-important, bitchy and two-faced person who thinks she can manipulate people by acting all twee. Articles like this are so insulting - playing the race card.

AwayinaKayzr · 02/12/2011 06:27

I can't stand her and it's got bugger all to do with her skin colour. She comes across as a horrible, stuck up, self centred bitch person.

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 06:30

The other thing you have to remember is that despite the fact that a record company would snap her up as the article says, it isn't the record companies' job to choose - it's the public's! Just because people in the business can see a way to make money out of her doesn't mean the voters at home are voting with the same criteria in mind.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 02/12/2011 06:30

What a load of crap .....

MenopausalHaze · 02/12/2011 06:35

Huge huge load of shite and shame on the OP for even dignifying it with a paste into here!

I quite like Misha and her talent is inarguable but something's not gelling with her and the voting public. I don't suppose it helped that Tulisa exposed her as a cocky loudmouthed bully a few weeks back - nobody likes a bully no matter what their skin colour!

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 06:39

Where did that article come from?

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 02/12/2011 06:46

There have been many great singers who have Ben cut early, even before boot camp. This show is not about singing ability, that is a secondary aim -it s about ratings and entertainment.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 02/12/2011 06:46

Dam auto correct! Been cut not Ben cut!

Bucharest · 02/12/2011 06:48

I don't like her type of music.

She has a very good voice (if you like that sort of yelling and rawping, which I don't)

Have missed last month or so of X fac and willhave hooooge catchup soon.

Who else is still in? Have they got rid of the Janet-the-faerie-queen yet?

Bucharest · 02/12/2011 06:50

lol- was thinking "Now, Ben, I don't remember him at all!"

It's also of course about selling records. What type of own record would Misha do? That would set her apart? The jaggyshaggy whatever it is that that revolting little cah did last year? The shake yer booty Alexandra Birke shite? What?

Chocamochalatte · 02/12/2011 06:51

I second what Away and Running said...

Megatron · 02/12/2011 06:53

What a load of cock.

I don't her to win because I don't think she's that great to be honest, I think her voice is too hard and not for me. I want Marcus to win. Does that make me less racist because his skin is a few shades lighter?

Honestly, I seriously wonder about some of the shite that people write.

LoveBeingFullOfChristmasCheet · 02/12/2011 06:55

Sbs no doubt tge op will come back and say those Ripken are lighter in skin and therefore Britain is no so scared of them Confused

Yes some people bleach their skin but that's because lighter skin is sought after in their cultures and has been for hundreds of years. Look at Bollywood stars they tend have lighter skin. Even in our culture pale skin was seen to highlight wealth not that long ago, how different from now.

I love her style, I think she will have an amazing career but I am not surprised about her being in tge bottom two. It's not unusual for tge best acts to have that happen. If people are really good it can stop people voting because they think why bother loads of people will vote for her. Also she has a very strong character that pits some peopke off voting for her. Her manner, tone, values are familiar to me as I have a friend from her part of tge world. But the fact is she also reminds me of Cher Lloyd and it is for similar reasons that people don't her. Maybe people feel she is too similar to cl so have seen it all before?

This article to me is lazy, it is basically saying is you do not like someone who is black you are racist without exploring what tge reasons could be.

LoveBeingFullOfChristmasCheet · 02/12/2011 06:57

e. I want Marcus to win. Does that make me less racist because his skin is a few shades lighter?

No mega, his whole point is that we are racist against people who are very dark, in otherwords only can cope with those who have lighter skin.

Moominsarescary · 02/12/2011 06:59

It has nothing to do with her colour and everything to do with the aligations of bullying IMO , and is it my imagination or has she suddenly developed a totally different talking voice and sickly sweet smile?

It's that which has put me off her even more than the bullying

lovecat · 02/12/2011 07:02

I find Mischa's voice a bit formulaic, tbh, but my musical taste is very far away from chart R&B, so I doubt I'm her intended audience.

She comes over (and this was before Tulisa's bully comments) as a totally up herself smug cah. That's why no-one likes her, nothing to do with the colour of her skin - I actually think the OP is being rather insulting to Marcus, Leona, Alexandra and all the other black successes of the show by brushing them aside so peremptorily. As for the 'black culture' of sticking a bit of rap in the middle of a song - wasn't that exactly what Cher Clagnut (who was orange white the last time I looked) did last year? Didn't seem to harm her career none...

It makes me laugh that Tulisa and the like are still keeping her in on the grounds of 'who will sell records, who will tour stadiums' - erm... it's the public that aren't voting for her that will potentially buy those cds and concert tickets - doesn't the fact she's been in the bottom 2 three times tell the judges something?

Never realised Amelia Lily had diabetes - doesn't change the fact that she's a dead-eyed shouter, OP has overestimated the value of a 'sob story' there...

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 07:04

arf at 'dead-eyed shouter.' Grin I am getting the feeling I'm really not missing much in this year's finalists. None of the ones I was enjoying before I left the UK are still there.

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 07:04

Oh, apart from Marcus, I liked him IIRC.

Alouisee · 02/12/2011 07:06

Don't watch X Factor then. It's the biggest pile of steaming, manipulative crap I've ever watched. It's cheap to produce and makes a fortune for the tv company.

If vocalists are any good they don't need to put themselves through the gauntlet that is X Factor.

JambalayaWarmMincePie · 02/12/2011 07:08

I dont like her, she makes me feel blurgh inside.

Nothing to do with the colour of her skin, to do with her attitude - that then changed to a stupid faux-shy face and fake baby voice.

Just not for me i'm afraid - but I didnt like Janet either, so obviously I've something against the Irish too..... Hmm

whatstheetiquette · 02/12/2011 07:23

Misha B is far more talented than any of the other contestants.

However, she was publicly (by the judges) called a bully on prime time TV! They called her a bully because they saw her bullying other contestants. For this reason, it doesn't matter what she sings, I wouldn't vote for her.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the colour of her skin or the fact she is female.

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 07:34

The thing about it being a competition where the public chooses, is that it is not just about talent or marketability. If they don't warm to you you've had it, even if you have pipes like Barbara Streisand.
