X Factor: Is Misha B Too Black to Win?

An interesting article. I agree with Cat. Do you?

Cat McshaneDocumentary Filmmaker and Journalist

This weekend is the semi-final of the X Factor, and while there's one contestant standing head and shoulders above the others, if I were a betting lady, I'd put money on Misha B being in the bottom two again. Britain, it seems, has a problem voting for the best act, and I'm calling it racist.

Misha B is the blackest contestant the competition has had, and the Britain that votes for X Factor is scared of black culture.

We've gone a bit David Starkey, who managed to write off the biggest civil uprising this country has seen for nearly 30 years, the summer riots, by blaming black culture. "The whites have become black," he croaked out on Newsnight in the aftermath. "A particular sort of violent, destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion."

But Misha B seems to be proud of her heritage and acknowledges her musical influences, which are rooted in black culture. Witness her last week taking the ultimate white girl's party anthem Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, sticking a rap in the middle of it and using a choreography that nods to Rihanna's Rude Boy.

But while plenty of people around the UK were cheering Misha B on, they weren't the people picking up the phones, who voted through all-round nice girls Little Mix, inoffensive Liverpudlian Marcus Collins and reinstated teenager Amelia Lily. This left Manchester-born Misha B singing for survival for the third time out of the last four weeks, needing to be saved by the judges again.

As Gary Barlow stated back in mid-November, "Of all the contestants we have on this show, the first person any record producer would sign up is Misha B", and yet there she was in a sing-off with Janet Devlin, someone who had forgotten the words to her first song, and for weeks had the haunted look of someone with a severe stomach complaint.

There have been black female winners of the X Factor. Leona Lewis won over audiences with her incredible voice and shy personality in 2006, while Alexandra Burke pulled off that magical combination of being the act boys fancied and that other women wanted to be friends with in 2008. These were deserved winners, but they didn't upset the apple cart. They wore beautiful dresses, they sang ballads, they played the game and walked away with the prize.

But Misha B is too out there for the X Factor audience to vote for.

She's working class, confident, even cocky, drawing comparisons with Tina Turner, Grace Jones and Missy Elliot, some of the world's most powerful black women.

At a time when black and Asian women are still, and increasingly, bleaching their skin lighter, and celebrities like Beyonce get into trouble for straightening their hair and dyeing it blonde, Misha B, afro styled differently each week, is recognisably black.

Britain doesn't know what to do with her. Men can't look after her and women who would've warmed to her got put off when judges Tulisa and Louis announced she was a bully, which is ironic when you're destroying someone's chance at success live on television.

As Misha B commented this week, "I understand how people think and how as human beings they are heavily influenced by people's comments. Of course it is going to damage my chances of winning the show."

Apart from Burke and Lewis, none of the other (all white, all male) winners since the series started in 2004 have had any comparable success. Instead, runners-up, like One Direction or Olly Murs, have taken their year's spotlight. But will Misha B even make it to the final?

This week, there was an insight into what X Factor bosses think will happen. They replaced Misha B with newly reinstated contestant Amelia Lily at the end of the Marks and Spencer Christmas advert all the finalists appear in. And this Saturday's show is expected to include a sob story about teenage Amelia's severe diabetes, always a vote-winner.

If Sunday does see Misha B leave, the biggest loser will be us, for not being able to reward a truly amazing talent with the prize she deserves, and claim her for ourselves. But it won't be the worst thing in the world for her. It'll prove that hard work and talent is not always the key, and that hell is other people.

But let us be assured, this young lady has a big future, and when she no longer has to rely on appeasing bigots for votes, she can set about changing minds from a place of greater power.

And frankly, if she's in the top four in spite of having been publicy exposed as a diva and a bully, and being disliked by any many people, then clearly she IS still getting plenty of votes on account of her talent. So the journo's argument just doesn't stand up.

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 07:37

Alexandra Burke.

Leona Lewis.

Marcus Collins.

Not white.

It's not a talent contest, it's a popularity contest. If she has made herself unpopular because of her attitude/bullying, then that is her problem. If that attitude/bullying is part of the "Black culture" to which Cat McShane refers then perhaps it's that that needs addressing! Like I say, I don't know. I haven't seen it. Just a thought!

Lazy, offensive reporting. I haven't "gone a bit David Starkey". She can fuck off.

Who are the "we" to whom she refers? Indian viewers? Bulgarian viewers? Pakistani viewers? Iranian viewers? Polish viewers? Is she tarring us all with the same brush? Does David Starkey speak for all of us or is that just Cat McShane? Or is she just disregarding them altogether because they don't count? That's a bit racist isn't it? Hmm

OP, did you just post this to be controversial and start a whole new race thread?

MenopausalHaze · 02/12/2011 07:39

See thinking about it - the danger with this type of stupid hard-of-thinking article is that it may now become questionable to dislike someone on account of what they do because they are black. Or yellow. Or green. Or the wrong bloody shade of any colour.

No matter that they are smug, arrogant, tease small furry animals, say nasty things to babies - whatever - if they're black then you'd better not say anything because you're a nasty racist! What a heap of steaming half cooked bollocks.

MenopausalHaze · 02/12/2011 07:40

OP, did you just post this to be controversial and start a whole new race thread?

Yes. That.

Damn it for falling for it ffs!

PositiveAttitude · 02/12/2011 07:41

I wouldn't like her if she was white, colour just doesn't come into it. Someone pulling the "you are all being racist" card like a stroppy toddler will hopefully make LESS people vote for her.

coldwed · 02/12/2011 07:42

Well hardly anyone is going to come in here and say 'you know what, she is too black for me, not my cup of tea'. It is just not going to happen.

People are not reading the article correctly...there is a different reaction towards dark skin blacks and light skin blacks, not forgetting facial features. Look at black people in advertisements - common theme is they are of lighter complexion.

coldwed · 02/12/2011 07:44

The journalist who wrote this article is a white woman (just in case you are wondering)

lubeybaublely · 02/12/2011 07:48

I don't like her voice and how she puts 'HA, HA' in every song. Last time I looked, that was nothing to do with her skin.

Alexandra Burke has a similar dark, and very beautiful black complexion - and she won because she excelled in all the weeks themes, had a great voice and didn't (at the time at least) act like a diva.

Misha is talented, but not in the league of Alexandra - and that's why she won't win.

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 07:48

coldwed - they could do though, it's an anonymous forum. People can say what they like, and frequently do!

slavetofilofax · 02/12/2011 07:49

I didn't read the whole OP, it's too long, and it's rubbish.

Two out of the four last contestants are black! If Misha doesn't win, it won't be because of her skin colour, it will be because not enough people like her the most.

If anything, I'd guess it works the other way. I think many black people who vote will vote for the black contestant to give them support, rather than because they think she is best. Or maybe they will like her best because she is black. Kelly certainly seems to have given her more supoort than her other girls.

The fact that she is still in the show, with another black contestant shows that plenty of people are voting for her. This is just another pathetic rant about people shouting racisim when there is none.

usualsuspect · 02/12/2011 07:49

Shes the best by a mile ,but she won't win

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 02/12/2011 07:49

First post room702? Hmm fwiw, starting your post 'I agree with cat. Do you?' couldn't be more a more obvious way to say 'it's meeeeeeee, read my article' Biscuit

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 07:51

Mischa B's musical/vocal style will appeal to a niche market so she probably won't win.

So did Janet Devlin's and that is why she is now out.

Clearly Mischa's niche market is bigger than everyone who has been voted out before her!

MenopausalHaze · 02/12/2011 07:56

Yes - I think fuckity has it!

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 07:57

Menopausal I think that is a good point. I remember when that absolutely excerable Alexandra woman was eventually removed by the production team on BB. I was amazed she stayed so long frankly, so heinous was her behaviour, but she spent so long mouthing off to people about the fact that she was black and proud and she wouldn't take any shit off anyone that I think it got to the point where people were frightened to say anything against her in case it was take as racist. They would have lost patience with a white person who behaved like that long before.

recall · 02/12/2011 07:57

load of crap !

SantasBigSack · 02/12/2011 07:57

Well Jesus if the journalist is the op then i feel sorry for you having to hawk your idiotic ramblings on a parenting site just to be noticed. A pulitzer winner it is not.-in fact i could let my cat take shit on a piece of paper and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and your article....

usualsuspect · 02/12/2011 07:57

The ones that don't win seem to do better anyway

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 08:00

I agree usual. Winning is a poisoned chalice sometimes, whereas most people who come second do often seem to do just as well or better.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourMincePies · 02/12/2011 08:00

Misha B is my favourite and I want her to win. I don't vote for her though, because although I like to watch the show I never, ever vote.

It makes no difference. The winner is lucky to do well afterwards, more likely to disappear after one album, and the three winners/acts who have been the most successful following the X Factor are Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and JLS, so I don't think the voting public or record buying public are racist about their X Factor choices.

As an X Factor contestant I think she has the best voice, as just a person I think she is beautiful and has a very clear style and I admire her confidence. And if we are talking about her skin, I would love the even skin tone that she has, mine is pale and blotchy at the best of times. Even skin tone of any colour is something I envy very much sometimes.

This weekend Misha was up against Janet Devlin in the bottom two and if Misha is, as the quote in the OP's post says, "the blackest contestant the competition has had" then Janet was definitely the palest and it didn't save her in the end did it? I'm a redhead too (under all the highlights) and have very pale skin - it's never made me dislike someone with darker skin. If Misha wins or loses I would still buy her album (as long as the song choices were good) and good luck to her.

I don't believe the bullying story either but I think it has done damage to her chances, much more so than the colour of her skin.

And when did the X Factor voters ever pick the best voice or biggest talent to win? Almost never. Otherwise we would have had G4 rather than Steve Brockstein (in fact, anyone rather than Steve Brockstein) or Rhydian Roberts instead of Leon Jackson. And we wouldn't have had weeks of Jedward or Wagner either.

coldwed · 02/12/2011 08:00

First post room702?

Last I checked, there is a change of name facility here. I hate all this first post shit.

SantasBigSack · 02/12/2011 08:03

Its always been a personality contest....unfortunately for Misha she lacks one essential thing...a personality.

MenopausalHaze · 02/12/2011 08:05

I hate all this first post shit

Well of course you do. It's a means of calling someone out and I'm sure that makes you twitch a bit!

SantasBigSack · 02/12/2011 08:07

coldwed are you room702?

coldwed · 02/12/2011 08:12

Why would I be? it is just in every thread that a poster has no history, it is dismissed as troll, even in the relationship section.

I wanted to post about a financial matter once but wanted to name change. In the end I could not be bothered as I knew there would be cries of 'first post...troll'.
