X Factor: Is Misha B Too Black to Win?

An interesting article. I agree with Cat. Do you?

Cat McshaneDocumentary Filmmaker and Journalist

This weekend is the semi-final of the X Factor, and while there's one contestant standing head and shoulders above the others, if I were a betting lady, I'd put money on Misha B being in the bottom two again. Britain, it seems, has a problem voting for the best act, and I'm calling it racist.

Misha B is the blackest contestant the competition has had, and the Britain that votes for X Factor is scared of black culture.

We've gone a bit David Starkey, who managed to write off the biggest civil uprising this country has seen for nearly 30 years, the summer riots, by blaming black culture. "The whites have become black," he croaked out on Newsnight in the aftermath. "A particular sort of violent, destructive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion."

But Misha B seems to be proud of her heritage and acknowledges her musical influences, which are rooted in black culture. Witness her last week taking the ultimate white girl's party anthem Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, sticking a rap in the middle of it and using a choreography that nods to Rihanna's Rude Boy.

But while plenty of people around the UK were cheering Misha B on, they weren't the people picking up the phones, who voted through all-round nice girls Little Mix, inoffensive Liverpudlian Marcus Collins and reinstated teenager Amelia Lily. This left Manchester-born Misha B singing for survival for the third time out of the last four weeks, needing to be saved by the judges again.

As Gary Barlow stated back in mid-November, "Of all the contestants we have on this show, the first person any record producer would sign up is Misha B", and yet there she was in a sing-off with Janet Devlin, someone who had forgotten the words to her first song, and for weeks had the haunted look of someone with a severe stomach complaint.

There have been black female winners of the X Factor. Leona Lewis won over audiences with her incredible voice and shy personality in 2006, while Alexandra Burke pulled off that magical combination of being the act boys fancied and that other women wanted to be friends with in 2008. These were deserved winners, but they didn't upset the apple cart. They wore beautiful dresses, they sang ballads, they played the game and walked away with the prize.

But Misha B is too out there for the X Factor audience to vote for.

She's working class, confident, even cocky, drawing comparisons with Tina Turner, Grace Jones and Missy Elliot, some of the world's most powerful black women.

At a time when black and Asian women are still, and increasingly, bleaching their skin lighter, and celebrities like Beyonce get into trouble for straightening their hair and dyeing it blonde, Misha B, afro styled differently each week, is recognisably black.

Britain doesn't know what to do with her. Men can't look after her and women who would've warmed to her got put off when judges Tulisa and Louis announced she was a bully, which is ironic when you're destroying someone's chance at success live on television.

As Misha B commented this week, "I understand how people think and how as human beings they are heavily influenced by people's comments. Of course it is going to damage my chances of winning the show."

Apart from Burke and Lewis, none of the other (all white, all male) winners since the series started in 2004 have had any comparable success. Instead, runners-up, like One Direction or Olly Murs, have taken their year's spotlight. But will Misha B even make it to the final?

This week, there was an insight into what X Factor bosses think will happen. They replaced Misha B with newly reinstated contestant Amelia Lily at the end of the Marks and Spencer Christmas advert all the finalists appear in. And this Saturday's show is expected to include a sob story about teenage Amelia's severe diabetes, always a vote-winner.

If Sunday does see Misha B leave, the biggest loser will be us, for not being able to reward a truly amazing talent with the prize she deserves, and claim her for ourselves. But it won't be the worst thing in the world for her. It'll prove that hard work and talent is not always the key, and that hell is other people.

But let us be assured, this young lady has a big future, and when she no longer has to rely on appeasing bigots for votes, she can set about changing minds from a place of greater power.

I think Mischa is the most talented, and that is why she has got to the position she is in. But, black or white, X factor viewers don't always just pick the most talented, it's usually the most fanciable or likeable with a reasonable talent that triumphs. And Mischa is not particularly fanciable or likeable, she's rather unattractive really. The real killer for her i think has been the bullying accusation, not her blackness. The fact that she is still in is testament to the publics recognition of her talent.

SantasBigSack · 02/12/2011 08:17

For me its her voice when she speaks...it really grind my gears. Amelia lily too

blueemerald · 02/12/2011 08:25

As many winners have been non Caucasian as have been women but no one is banging the drum saying x factor viewers/the public (not at all sure these terms are interchangeable as used in the "article") are sexist because it would be nonsense .

vigglewiggle · 02/12/2011 08:27

I think there is a point to be made about the pressure on black celebrities, models, performers to make their appearance more 'white' because of culturally narrow perceptions of beauty.

However I think the article confuses the arguments and in the end makes no point at all. I lost interest at the point where the article tried to claim that Grace Jones, Tina Turner and Missy Elliot are some of the most powerful black women Confused. I think Rosa Parks, Michelle Obama and Baroness Scotland might have had something to say about that!

coldwed · 02/12/2011 08:31

Misha does have a ridiculous voice, I agree. I think she is just so socially awkward and very shy that it comes off as being arrogant. She is the best singer there for me, but this year has been so piss poor in general, it is not hard for her to outshine the rest.

I Like Amelia but by god that girl cannot be 16. She looks like she has lived for 25 years.

MudAndGlitter · 02/12/2011 08:32

I like Marcus. I can't stand Mischa. She comes across as an ego-centric bully and her song choices and outfits are awful. I listen to all types of music but she's not really stretching herself as far as she could go.

Does the racist thing mean little mix have no chance? Since they're not all white either

FreudianSlipper · 02/12/2011 08:36

she will not win becuase she is not middle of the road enough. those that win their style is always middle they are not too soulful, too rocky, too funky just nice and a tad boring but their appeal is to most not to a few

she is very very talented and i really hope she gets a record contract becasue she is so much more talented than many who are in the charts. i think she is great and a breath of fresh air someone who has the confidence to add their style to music.

and really too black Hmm was rydian too white to win xfactor, his colour was never mentioned but his style was very theatrical that is why he didn't win

lesley33 · 02/12/2011 08:41

You know I agree that in general the public are more likely to like someone in teh public eye with lighter black skin than darker black skin.

But i really don't think this is the issue here. X factor has always been a popularity contest more than a singing contest. Misha has been exposed as a bully. That will make her less popular.

And although she has a good voice, I don't think its great or that unique. Personally I rated Janet Devlin much more because her voice was unique. Misha's voice just blends in for me with lots of other good singers voices.

FreudianSlipper · 02/12/2011 08:44

i do get what the article is saying though but i do not think it is just about her being too black or representative of part of black culture its about her not being middle of the road enough. it is sad is this day and age so much pressure is put on asian and black men and women to represent all asian and black people

whitney houston didn't sell anywhere near as many records when she became too black (that is what was said at the time) though it was by far her best music

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 02/12/2011 08:46

I think the journalist has very stereotyped ideas on what it means to be black and working class, tbh.

OriginalPoster · 02/12/2011 08:50

There is no excuse for regurgitating David Starkey's outpourings ever, ever.
He is particularly poisonous despite being educated, so no excuse...

theworldaccordingtome · 02/12/2011 08:55

I just love how because she's black and a bully and arrogant and self important and destroys really good songs we're all not voting for her because she's black and we're racist. Seriously if she was white and a bully and arrogant and self important and murdered good songs we would vote for her though right.... because she's white .....err no, thought not. THIS IS OBSURD!!

Ciske · 02/12/2011 09:02

X Factor's most succesful contestant is mixed race and we're about to get another mixed race winner (go Marcus!). I don't think putting all Misha B's trouble on being black is the answer here. She got to the top 5, so she's not exactly doing shabby, and when it becomes to being disliked in spite of a great voice, white girl Kitty has a much bigger complaint to make.

TroublesomeEx · 02/12/2011 09:03

Where's OP?

Flisspaps · 02/12/2011 09:14

No I don't agree.

I don't like her because she's crap. She's not crap because she's black, she's crap because she's crap.

I hate the fact that the judges choose to keep her in over better acts because they're 'looking for an artist who will sell records' - if people aren't voting for her, they're not going to buy her records.

It didn't go unnoticed that the week after she was first in the bottom two she wheeled out the sob story about her estranged parent, and then sang her song in a white dress (angelic) with winglike feathery details around the neck (angelic) surrounded by smoky 'clouds' (heavenly) with lots of lovely white lights (heavenly) in an attempt to make the public think she's nicey-nice instead of the bully that she had previously been reported as being.

It also pisses me right off that in the beginning she had fabulous production compared to the other contestants and had the judges fawning over her saying she was 'already like one of the guest acts, rather than a contestant' - utter bollocks. Perhaps if you'd given them all equally good production in the beginning rather than trying to con the audience into thinking she was better, I might actually think she was better, but she's a pudding that's been over-egged.

HOWEVER - given that the winners in these reality talent shows don't generally fare as well as those who come in third or second place, then perhaps I'll start voting for her to win...JLS, 1D, Olly Murs, Jedward Hmm, Stacey Solomon and SuBo (BGT, but same sort of thing) all lost but are doing rather well....Steve Brookstein, Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson - where are they now?

I should make a banner - Marcus to come second (and be much more successful!)

DoesNotGiveAFig · 02/12/2011 09:15

Bollocks. Whole load of tripe.

Misha is just a bit of a Cah, got nowt to do with her colour. Le sigh.

DoesNotGiveAFig · 02/12/2011 09:16

I also believe it's gingerist (even though she isn't a genuine ginge) and irishist that Janet was booted off.

Ciske · 02/12/2011 09:21

Flisspaps - I agree on most of what you said, but 'where is Leona Lewis now' is a bit of an odd comment! She's the one with the massive breakthrough both inside and outside the UK, and has two succesful records out already. She's the only winner that truly lived up to the promise.

Serenitysutton · 02/12/2011 09:24

This is a journalist- I can't believe a poster would write like that.... I think there is a point to this- marcus is mixed race but "White" alex Burke is
black but not BLACK. Misha is black with a capitalB And suspect she appears to agressive for gentil middle england folk. She's very talented, not very likeable in this forum.

Serenitysutton · 02/12/2011 09:26

Sorry write like that and disappear I meant...

theworldaccordingtome · 02/12/2011 09:28

Furthermore, has anyone noticed how every year X Factor desperately try to manipulate the vote. Doesn't matter how many times Misha is in the bottom 2 she will be saved by the judges. Who sings the last line of the song on the M&S advert?? Misha does - with a long lingering shot of her at the end, advert played over and over on Sat and Sun evening. You will notice also that the last song they sing in the final will be the X Factor single which will be selected especially for her. She will be told that she nailed it and the other act will be told they didn't do as good a job - of course they didn't it was a rediculous song choice for them.
I have a £5 bet on Misha to win which I placed the morning after the show broadcasting her first audition - the first rounds hadn't finished yet. So far it's looking likely.

lisad123 · 02/12/2011 09:29

I think she is the most talented one in there BUT she's just not likeable. Tlisa and Louis did her favours by their comments which is very unfair IMO.
Sadly on these shows it's not all about talent Sad

FellatioNelson · 02/12/2011 09:29

It is a journo Serenity - the poster has cut and pasted an article. I do think the OP might be the same journo though!

wwbd · 02/12/2011 09:30

I thought it was yodelist that Janet was voted off.
The X factor is manipulated - if they want her in the bottom 2 she'll be there. The judges are clearly scripted - the bully comment was intentional I reckon. I wonder whether she was overwhelmingly ahead at the start and they wanted to shake things up. I really like her performances at the moment but didn't at the start.

Flisspaps · 02/12/2011 09:30

Ciske - I mentioned Leona as I've not seen her on TV or heard anything new from her for an age. I know she did incredibly well in the beginning but I didn't think she'd been particularly prominent of late :)
