katkitya · 18/11/2011 19:28

Its going to go horribly wrong, isnt it?

I guess it was meant to be dreamy to reflect the mind of a 17 year old girl? I missed the last 5 mns (recorded but not watched) but the episode did feel slow.

katkitya · 18/11/2011 23:46

You need to watch the last five minutes. I wanted to feel sorry for her but, I cant.

Certainly didn't grip me like the previous episodes. No tension, which there was lots of last week with Harry. Nothing really moved on. I just felt that if I had missed this episode it wouldn't matter, maybe it will all come together later.

javo · 19/11/2011 11:36

I thought it was slow too - especially after the Harry episode last week, but it does set up future storylines. I was shocked that Connie felt so little about how her actions could affect Aish who is close to her. Even though she is only 17 I would expect her to have a bit more understanding as they have protrayed her as being quite a capable and caring girl. I did know a girl who liked married men and had no conscience about it but she was a very different personality to Connie.

anonacfr · 19/11/2011 11:48

Just watched the end with noise in the background- did she tell her friend that Hector had raped her?????
And what's with her being hypnotised by the Hector-lookalike boy at the party.

It's so odd Connie is such a dreamy character it feels like she's not really there.

redandgreen · 19/11/2011 11:55

LOVED the Connie episode. Was one of the best chapters in the book too. Such a good portrayal of teenagerdom - compartmentalised life, risk taking, trust, compulsion, secrets, sexual awakening, selfishness and all with a butter wouldn't melt innocence. Really excited about the aisha and Richie episodes now. The holiday aisha and Hector have felt so true in the book and the series is sticking so brilliantly to the book.

redandgreen · 19/11/2011 12:05

Would never feel sorry for Connie. By turns envious and wanting to give her a shake.

She has taken the underlying truth that Hector has taken advantage and has treated her as an object and twisted it into the rape allegation. She wants Richie to think badly of Hector but not actually harm Hector or aisha.

Richie is the one for sympathy, he is so on the edge of everything.

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 19/11/2011 12:09

i wasn't enjoying the connie episode. i couldn't place her relevance to the storyline and couldn't understand why there was an episode on her (haven't read the book) but i see now how what she has done is going to (possibly?) have a huge impact on how things pan out, for hector at least.

katkitya · 19/11/2011 22:01

I dont understand how her and her friend are so involved with all of them. Especially the friend, what was he doing sat at the table without Connie. I get that Connie must babysit for them all and has a Saturday job at the vets. Is the boy just her hanger on?

OP posts:
hmc · 19/11/2011 22:03

Dull - and I found the scene in the bath a bit gratuitous and toe curling

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 20/11/2011 01:57

yes katkitya- i couldn't understand why richie? was just there. i began to wonder if he was a nephew or older son of gary and rosie? (is that her name?)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/11/2011 09:04

I haven't worked out how he fits in either.

Moln · 20/11/2011 09:46

In the book there is abit where Richie is at the house before Connie because she was suposed to babysit but got held up at the vet surgery, Connie called Richie to go for her.

Bit wierd though that they had rosie and whatsit still there in the episode, but offered no explanation to his presence before connie's

i think the bit between her and the boy at the party is better in the bookk to., it's not quite as hypnotic nd more like a teenage relatonship with two nice enough teenagers

you also find out about why conniels with hr aunt and more about her parents, but not sure if tht'd be considered a spoiler to say

katkitya · 20/11/2011 10:42

I thoiught Richie must have been a relative as well. I dont know how Connie fits school in!!

How many more now?

JinxAndFluff · 22/11/2011 08:28

Think this week is 5/8...Rosie in court apparently

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/11/2011 18:40

Ah, just looked it up in Wiki. Richie is Connie's gay best friend.

realhousewife · 01/12/2011 14:15

Caught up with the Rosie episode last night. Once again a brilliant portrayal of the reality in some peoples relationships. There seems to be a recurrent theme about boundaries within relationships - i.e. that they are very blurred, it's as if every character crosses and pushes boundaries all the time and that the relationships are very rarely in tune with each other. Which to me seems actually a fairly normal part of the human condition.

We want to be part of a couple, or bring up kids, but we are essentially selfish. In the bad old days, it was acceptable for men to be as selfish as they liked and women simply had to suffer. But now women too have the option to focus on their own egos, and can exhibit the same selfishness.

In many ways Connie is the thread that weaves in and out of these unbalanced relationships - she absorbs this behaviour and as a result has very little sense of self (or appears to). She's drawn into their arguments and gameplans and she lies and cheats in the same way that they do.

And Rosie, what a brilliant character but what a comedown. I sadistically enjoyed that episode, seeing her dubious morals put to the test.

At the end after she lost the case did her husband say to Harry "See, we men rule" or was it "see, women rule"?

clangermum · 02/12/2011 08:27

Yes, lots of boundaries again tonight.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy the Manolis episode - thought he was a peripheral character, but the thing I'm enjoying about the series is you never know where it's going to take you and each episode has been surprising in a way.

Perfect mirroring at the funeral - Hector and Harry start to scuffle, Manolis is outraged at their lack of respect, five minutes later he's doing the same

realhousewife · 02/12/2011 21:22

Really enjoyed last night's episode, brilliant acting from the old folk, amazing characters. Loved the old boy scuffling and reminiscing. And Koula and her infuriatingly moralistic yet hypocritical attitude.

Was I the only one thinking that Hector might not be Manolis son? Koula's old fancyman certainly had similar features - was that deliberate?

The writer must have immense empathy to build these characters to be so true to life.

diddl · 04/12/2011 10:26

I misswed the Rosie one.

Any good?

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 04/12/2011 11:26

Real - yes, I thought that too, although I also thought that Manolis didn't quite say that it was Koula who had been unfaithful, he let Hector put the words in his mouth, maybe it was him that was unfaithful. But then later they hinted that she had had an affair with Thimios (the one who had died). The scenes with the other friend who was dying were very moving, altogether another excellent episode. I would like to know more about Harry's parents.

Diddl - yes, it was very good, you should try and catch it on Iplayer.

diddl · 04/12/2011 21:46

Just watched the Rosie one.

Oh dear-they didn´t come off very well, did they?

Something that I remember from the Harry one though-how she was effing & blinding at Harry whilst holding Hugo!

pretendhousewife · 05/12/2011 22:21

Oooh Mistletoes I'm glad I'm not the only one thought that Hector might be oldplayboywhatsisname's lovechild.
