This episode was my favourite one. I loved it. Which ones next?

I loved Manolis's episode - his sheer rage while he was sitting in the bathroom!! Next is Aisha (7/8) while she and Hector are on holiday together...

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 10:10

Rosie is an unlikeable charcater. Egotistical, self obsessed and ultimately a an utter hypocrite.

diddl · 06/12/2011 10:16

So far I don´t really like any of them.

Aisha pissed me off in the Harry episode when she shouted at her husband-something like "I wasn´t talking to you, I was talking to him".

But the court thing-how realistic was it?
I mean yes it might not have happened if Hugo´s parents were looking after him.

But didn´t Harry slap Hugo after he had dropped the bat?
It was in retaliation for Hugo kicking him?

At the end of day, Harry´s boy wasn´t in any danger?

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 10:18

Aisha I dislike too.
Joyless and self righteous.

suburbandream · 06/12/2011 10:20

I've been enjoying the series, but I didn't realise it would be so loooong! I thought there would be four episodes or something. It's very true to the book, and I must agree I don't really like any of the characters. It's not easy watching or reading

witchwithallthetrimmings · 06/12/2011 10:25

I was mesmirised by the book but could not enjoy it (at least til the last chapter which offered some kind of hope). Because i found it so uncomfortable i was to scared to watch it on TV- it just makes things even closer. But then perhaps i was wrong, in the book you are forced in some way to identify with the protaganist in each chapter you can be a bit more neutral on the screen

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 10:30

It's pretty exceptional TV, best thing I've seen for a very long time. But yes, uncomfortable viewing!

yesbutnobut · 06/12/2011 10:47

I think the Aisha episode will be very strong - she's a brilliant actress and there are some hard hitting scenes in that chapter in the book. Can't wait.

katkitya · 06/12/2011 18:39

Yes, Im wondering what Harry has done to her in the past. I dont like her so far and her English accent is still driving me mad!! I just wanted that young girl to tell Hector the truth when he rang her this week!!

I have loved it. The best thing on tv at the moment.

I think someone said earlier that you're not really supposed to like the characters. What I find so attractive about this programme is the fact that every character is flawed. TV drama is at its most intriguing and realistic when the protagonists are not perfect. Of course we all like a bit of escapist stuff, but it follows in the vein of a lot of less weighty drama, like SATC, Sopranos etc, whose characters are also flawed but identifiable with.

There's something interesting about using the first person for each episode, I'm sure this is a literary style with its own name, but no idea what as I'm definitely not literary.

I expect to see a lot more of it to come.

But isn't the acting great though? Manolis and Koula were amazing. I always think great acting is down to great directing, rather than actors on their own.

FairlyDinkum · 06/12/2011 19:38

I agree with that pretendhousewife. Its funny though, I haven't read the book but I can't say that I do dislike all of the characters. I really don't. They are all layered, multi-faceted human beings and we are seeing them exposed at their worst moments, which we all have.

I admit I have seen this series through now and at the end, there is really only one character I actively dislike. I mean dislike in a way that I don't understand what drives them or can emphathise with them in any way. Anyway, I won't reveal who. Perhaps when you guys are finished we can have a round up on who we hated/liked the most and why?

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 06/12/2011 19:42

Harry, is my guess.

pretendhousewife · 06/12/2011 19:54

Hugo? I wouldn't like to spend much time with a breastfeeding overindulged aggressive 3 year-old. Shock

pretendhousewife · 06/12/2011 20:01

Oh yes Katkitya - what did Harry do that Aisha knew about?

I do love these unpredictable characters -how many people do you know and really got on with, then found out they were less than perfect, but still get on with them anyway?

FairlyDinkum · 06/12/2011 21:59

I'll compare my 'least favourite' with your 'least favourite' at the end. I don't want to give anything away!

diddl · 07/12/2011 06:45

"what did Harry do that Aisha knew about?"

Hits his wife?
Is having an affair?

At the moment the only one I like is Hector!

I loathe both of his parents after the Manolis ep!

katkitya · 07/12/2011 10:40

How strange, because I really felt for them Smile

OP posts:
diddl · 07/12/2011 10:58

Any sympathy I had for them re no one else being/seming to be so bothered about family went when Koula called Aisha "the black one" & Manolis grabbed hold of Aisha & said "you will go to Greece"-or something like that.

I can´t bear that we are older therefore we can´t say/do what we want but you have to do as we say attitude.

diddl · 07/12/2011 10:59

Well, I messed that post up-should be "therefore we can..."

HarrySantaatemygoldfish · 07/12/2011 11:11

I agree, I find them unlikeable, thoroughly. As much as Harry but for different reasons.

pretendhousewife · 07/12/2011 11:21

Oh I had a real soft spot for those two - I thought Aisha's refusal to accept the offer of a free trip to Greece rather selfish. Especially considering their age etc.
Koula's a bit dominating but that's fairly acceptable in a traditional Greek family.

diddl · 07/12/2011 11:29

"Koula's a bit dominating but that's fairly acceptable in a traditional Greek family."

But not OK for Aisha to be in her family.

Well, nothing would induce me to go away with my ILs-especially if I already had a trip planned!

anonacfr · 07/12/2011 14:14

Koula's abit dominating?? Heh!
That's not the issue, even though I thought she was thoroughly unreasonable to expect Hector's working wife to show up at the funeral of her husband's godfather whom he hadn't seen for thirty years.

It's the racism that's the killer. Harry the two timing wife beater is fine because he plays the part of the dutiful Greek boy. Rosie was the 'Australian' bitch- just because she dared press charges against Harry.
Koula's DIL through no fault of her own, doesn't have a name in Koula's eyes (literally) just because she happens to be of a different race. Aisha is not stupid and can't not know what Koula thinks of her. Would you really expect her to go away with the family instead of the nice holiday she'd planned with Hector?
Specially since she wasn't asked if the timing was convenient or if she even wanted to go.

As I mentioned in the other thread it was rather chilling that Koula turned all nice with Manolis after she'd heard he'd made Aisha cry.

FairlyDinkum · 07/12/2011 20:03

Where did they find the actress who played Koula I wonder? I checked her out on IMDB and she appears to have no acting experience. Was she someone's grandma? Whatever, she's excellent in the role. The actor who played Manolis is relatively well know though. He's an interesting guy as he grew up in rural Australia in the 50s/60s as the son of Greek immigrants, which was by all accounts 'interesting'. Oh, and he's not as old as he's supposed to be in the Slap. I think he is only 62. I'm sure they are supposed to be older (70s maybe?)
