This was fabby!

What a load of nutters.

We never stay in B&B's, though. Feels too much like being a paying guest in someone's house.

Novatel, Travelodge, Premier Inn all the way for us.

pipsqueak · 01/11/2011 00:01

OMG at the bloke in cleethorpes with his grandma - he gets an adrenaline rush from checking the tea supplies and scribbling on the sheets - they all seem a bit lacking though

southeastastra · 01/11/2011 09:36

i really didn't see what would be wrong with informing the b and b owner that the loo brush was dirty or whatever, the reviewers seemed to get some sort of kick in keeping it all in until they got home. awful people really, felt sorry for the hoteliers all the way.

watched this too. Utter madness all round. Everything there is to say about the Norfolk bloke has been said but I will just add that a particular gem was the shot of him serving up in the kitchen - the way that langoustine was placed on the edge of the fish fillet looked as if the fish was a life raft and the langoustine was drowning in the sauce - genius film making. And a little bit scary if that was placed in front of you. Particularly if you paid £20 for it.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/11/2011 11:18

It was real water-cooler TV!

The bit I really liked was when the hotelier had to justify his furnishings to the guests!

catwithflowers · 01/11/2011 11:23

Fab tv Grin Some seriously odd people. Agree, the Nan was brilliant Grin

Pagwatch · 01/11/2011 11:30

But it was such a totally symbiotic relationship.
At no point did any of the b&b owners talk about plummeting bookings because of trip advisor yet they would shriek at each other as soon as a review went up.
And the reviewers loved catching out and upsetting the owners even though most normal people would read 'kettle had water in' and think 'ok, nutter. Ignore everything he says'

It was batty. They were soooooooo involved.

The woman from the Norfolk B&B appeared to be making snide remarks all through the lunch that was supposed to get the reviewer on her side - when she said winter was the best time as they get nicer people and then repeated it while looking pointed at the reviewer - what is the betting that the reviewer's original visit was at any time other than winter?

sis · 01/11/2011 11:33

Oh yes, she also said that her husband's heart condition meant that he shouldn't read negative reviews on trip advisor but then proceeded to read them to him!! I felt sorry for their daughter.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/11/2011 11:37

I think there was a severe case of self-delusion amongst all participants. The guests actually took joy in seeking the 'bad' and ensuring that they added to the bunfight - the hoteliers just fanned the fires and were ultra-sensitive to the bizarre behaviour.

There was a serious sense of humour failure amongst them all.

KatieMortician · 01/11/2011 11:44

I didn't know whether to feel pity or just want to say "FFS!" to the St Ives woman when she said she would cyber-attack TripAdvisor if she could... but was unable to countenance putting a curtain on a window (even if we couldn't see any light).

Just seemed such a shame they had lost all perspective and become such victims. There was no acknowledgement at any point that some of the points made were constructive (obviously some were bonkers but not all).

We do have a special kind of customer service in the UK where customers are viewed as an irritant - the Norfolk people were the best example of this. It's perculiar, hilarious and depressing.

catwithflowers · 01/11/2011 12:09

Wonder if any mumsnetters run a B&B or small hotel? Would be interesting to get their take on this. I do think you would have to have a certain 'detachment' to make it work and keep your sanity.

I watched with dd, 14, and we sat open mouthed at the Basil Fawlty owner saying he made Nazi jokes when they had German guests Shock

And I'm sorry, but the seafood he served did look rather disgusting.

StopRainingPlease · 01/11/2011 12:42

And when you're in the middle of eating, do you really want the owner/chef coming over to your table with a rambling story about how he came up with the dish?

lampli · 01/11/2011 14:25

I enjoyed this immensely! Most of the people doing the reviewing were plain bonkers, and didn't seem to understand the difference between a B&B and a 4 star hotel. Surely nobody would expect their sheets to be changed every night in a guest house? And isn't biro-ing all over the bedlinen criminal damage? It's not as though he can deny doing it when it was filmed and broadcast. I loved the way he said it was for the staff to find out about his skin condition. Think how much fun checking in would be if you were subjected to a medical questionnaire before you were given your key.

The slightly eccentric chap in the lake district with all the stuffed creatures was quite appealing in a way, I thought, but I can see how he wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea.

I sympathised with the couple in Norfolk because the moany woman was so, so annoying and po-faced. She was so awful it made them look better. I didn't like the way the wife-waitress kept chatting to them and she was so unsubtle about wanting them to change the review. The husband-chef coming to explain all about the food would put me off too. I prefer to be left in peace.

I was irritated by the man in the burgundy v-neck with nothing underneath and decided his opinion couldn't possibly count.

GetOrfMo1Land · 01/11/2011 14:49

Oh this was genius programme making (for those who missed it, I have just watched it on the Channel 4 website).

What complete nutcases - the seafood in the Norfolk place look absolutely disgusting (and the langoustine drowming in the plate of slop look hilarious georgimama).

I have a soft spot for the daft geezer with his gran and the biro. His was completely batty in quite an endearing way.

The place in the Lakes looks lovely.

GetOrfMo1Land · 01/11/2011 14:50

The couple in Norfolk were ghaslty - why the bloody hell are people like that in the hospitality industry. They shouldn't be let anyweher near normal humans, the rude, aggressive buggers.

KatieMortician · 01/11/2011 14:54

I could watch a whole series on the Norfolk couple. I roared when he said his recent heart surgery was a reason not to be critical of his ghastly establishment.

catwithflowers · 01/11/2011 15:23

katie, I think that's when the Aussie woman decided to leave Grin

Hullygully · 01/11/2011 15:28

Paggy - it was just fabbo.

The owners who got 8 million reviews and decided they were all spiteful and vicious and didn't even once ever ever think, well, maybe thin flat bits of fish drowned in orange gloop is a bit horrid, and yes, the weird weird weird reviewers.

That gay couple, frotting with excitement over the loo brush, and the small thin man whose nan said, "He's enjoying a bit of power for the first time in his life."

Hullygully · 01/11/2011 15:29

Getorf - yy, why are they so nasty when we have worked so hard all our lives?

Er, because your place is a bit shit?

Are you better, btw?

GetOrfMo1Land · 01/11/2011 15:30

Yes, when he said 'I have been in this business for 46 people' (instead of years) and then when people (understandably) sniggered shouted at them and said' 'Iahev just had open heart surgery and am on a lot of drugs'

Did anyone else feel VERY SORRY for the poor Spanish waitress. I bet she sits in the bath at the end of the day and cries and cries. I mean Norfolk ffs. Those ghastly people and she has to live in Norfolk to boot, eating badly cooked langoustine.
