A tad cruel, or must watch tv? or both?

Which is utter bollocks and anyone who has some physics would understand it a a lie. You are weightless in space (not mass less) because you are in free fall. Even in earth orbit you still have about 90% of the gravity you have on the earth. They are weightless because they are in free fall, and that would be true of any earth orbit, even one low down. They got rid of anyone who understood space and physics to allow them to fake this one.

sorry

MascaraOHara · 09/12/2005 16:19

but that's the whole point MB, they picked people who didn't have a clue so that these 'minor' things wouldn't be a problem.

People who watched sci-fi, Deep Space 9, star trek etc were all rejected.

Anyone with a degree in specific subjects etc..

Basically they hand picked the most gullable people they could find and with the blessing of the contestants families they're going to make complete idiots of them.

zippimistletoes · 09/12/2005 16:22

the weightlessness thing is interesting as I'm sure they could have given them that experience out of the 4 million spent..you can experience it at funfairs can't you?

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 16:22

Yes, I realise that is why they excluded those people., and said that in my post.

TBH you could con a lot of people with that one. After all how many people think that a heavu object falls faster than a slow one? Vast numbers I'd bet, in spite of the national curriculum.

Can you make someone look a fool, unless they collude a little?

MascaraOHara · 09/12/2005 16:24

sorry obviously didn't read your post fully.

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 16:24

Zippimisletoes, to generate it for a reasonable period of time you have to fly a large plane in a parabolic curve, to put people into free fall. Tis is how they train real astronauts and how they filmed parts of Apollo 13.

It is a hell of a faff tho, and you don't stay weightless for very long, only a few minutes. Very expensive and I'd have thought impossible to set up without the contestants 'twigging' the set up.

Plus most people puke the first time! Lots and lots and lots.....not good for TV?

zippimistletoes · 09/12/2005 16:39

here is one of those you mention in case anyone does want to try weightlessness

I guess disney rides are more than 4million lol

crunchie · 09/12/2005 16:43

To my amusment 2 of the cadets are 'Media Students' That says it all doesn't it

And I can take the piss as I am in Media too

zippimistletoes · 09/12/2005 16:44

this is a better link in the US

but if it's so easy to have a flight where you do experience weightlessness and it's not extraordinarily expensive and they haven't promised these space cadets much more then what is the big deal for them anyway?

They seem to have told them they were going into space and then told them they weren't

Blandmum · 09/12/2005 18:01

The thing is they people are being tricked into thinking they are going into space for several days. The parabolic flights only let you experience free fall....weightlessness.....for a very short peiod of time. In a parabolic flight curve you only have about 30 seconds of weightlessness. They may run several parabolic dives, and give you 10 minutes weighlessness in total, but each time you have to stop, gain heingt and then 'drop' again.

These guys are not that switched on, but even they wouldn't be fooled by 30 seconds of weightlessness, stop, climb, 30 seconds etc. Plus they would have to put their mock up 'space capsule' inside the jiet, and that might not be viable.

They are not trying to give them the expeience, they are conning them.

In the disney rides you ar only in free fall for a few seconds, couldn't replicate that for several days on earth.

pupucelovesruDOuLaph · 12/12/2005 21:04

What if WE are the ones taken for a ride.... are they not all actors ????????

pupucelovesruDOuLaph · 12/12/2005 22:00

So what do you reckon?

laughinglil · 13/12/2005 10:13

dont think the launch was believable at all! sorry but think its all a fix. liked it before last night. They are either very thick or we are for believing that they believed they were in space.

MascaraOHara · 13/12/2005 10:34

also liked it before last night. Last night was truly dire. If they don't all know then they deserve to be made fools off.

Was assking DP if they'd thought to get a right hand drive coach and/or russian number plates but didn't see enough of it to check!

LilacBump · 13/12/2005 10:35

i agree, they are all really stupid or we're being fooled.

zippimistletoes · 13/12/2005 11:07

I think the bits I've seen have just been pathetic, no one could find themselves convinced in any respect..I think they are pretending for the sake of the cash

laughinglil · 13/12/2005 11:23

the look on their faces when they went up ..they were like is this it. (the thing didn't even shake ) he said it was smooth as anything. They are either going along with it or really are the thickest people on this planet.
I think we are being fooled though.

popsycalindisguise · 13/12/2005 11:35

i agree - think we are being fooled....

MascaraOHara · 13/12/2005 11:45

The jury's out for me on who is being fooled. I'm not sure if it's us or them.. there are definitely people out there that stupid.

The bit about the moth was laughable and that girl getting her foot stuck.. bizarre.

morocco · 13/12/2005 17:53

have watched bits (hubby is hooked) and they are actors for sure - now |I can watch it with a clear conscience!

katierocket · 13/12/2005 17:54

but if they are actors and the viewers are being fooled what will they do? will they just go, "ah we knew all along, ha" and then the viewers will go "oh right, how crap", switch off and it'll be absolutely rubbish (I mean more rubbish than it is already)

zippimistletoes · 13/12/2005 17:55

but doesn't it have an air of desperate pointlessness..

i suspect it is getting a big fat uhh errrrrrrrr
from most people

and it does remind those who say more ordinary people should go on big brother just how dull and boring some people are

Blandmum · 13/12/2005 17:58

I must confess, it might be that we are the ones getting conned.

That said there are some very gullible people out there and the more time they 'commit' to this the more reason they have to believe.

There are also people with that little scientific understanding. Re the simulator, they can be very believable....I have felt sick in one, and that one didn't even move!
