Yes the 23 goes to morningside Smile

Pamsco..there is a scheme just at the end of gorgie, the route to the shops was past our house, had our bins set of fire, stones, eggs thrown at our windows, the door smashed in etc.

Must point out again I know not everyone from there is like that

I agree. But sticking them on the telly isn't the help they need. I think that's what makes me really uncomfortable - it's like the Victorian freak shows.

Report
expatinscotland · 18/05/2011 09:32

They're adults with a choice (except for that poor little girl, whose mother gave permission for her to be on the show). They chose to go on the show. Why watch it if you feel people are being exploited?

Fanjo do you mean behind the old Summerfield is it Aldi or Lidl now?

I guess when I think of a scheme I think the massive ones with high rises like w. hailes not the individual buildings.

PamSco · 18/05/2011 09:36

expat I don't watch it he does, I zone out now when it's on but I draw the parallel with the freakshow because it has that power to draw your attention. Like a road traffic accident!

PamSco..yes I lived there..there are two high rises just along from there with a path past the houses to aldis (I think its aldis now, I dont go there now)

I usually knit whilst it's on. Sort of one ear on it, eyes on the project.

I used to get the 23 from the Meadows ( Doctors pub on that corner, near the Bedlam).
Gosh, many years ago now!

Are they going to ditch those trams? What a dumb arse idea that always was. We left right as that was kicking off.

I agree with PamSco. I have never watched it, but from the comments I have read on Facebook from people who have, I cannot see how social depravation and poverty makes for television entertainment in anybody's world :(

It's a documentary series.

I watched it last night. Unbelievable. And the girl who walked up and just smacked the girl in the face when she was being interviewed was horrendous.

I am an Edinburgh girl. The number 26 was my route through Corstorphine.

Apparently there is to be a discussion about what it costs to either finish the trams against scrapping the. Huge, bloody waste of money.

Report
expatinscotland · 18/05/2011 11:06

Yeah, she smacked her because she knew that girl couldn't strike back and she had a tag on still.

Glad she eventually moved away. She was too young to be wasting her time with those nedettes.

They should have quit those trams donks ago. It was throwing good money after bad. They already had them and took them out.

The Executive was also very clear and firm they were allocated £550m for it and no more. Now it's 80% gone and they can't increase the council tax.

Overheard this on a bus in Leith a couple of years ago by a charming gang of girlies
"One-two-three/Who are we/We are the mental YLT
With a baseball bat and a snooker cue/we will kick fuck out of you"

Niiice.

It said on the front of The Scottish Sun (so it must be true) that Marvin and Dayna are getting married. Even more shocking was the fact that Marvin is only 31yrs old! Shock He has to be the best advert ever to not take drugs.

That's what depresses me the most - the pride in being a violent moron. When did that become something to proud of??

I'm a right left wing softie but I could make a credible case for bringing stocks - they would work great now. Punishment has to fit today's society and remand, asbos just equal 15 minutes of fame. The stocks, however, coupled with enforced dressing in unfashionable clothes would be a better preventitive.

My friends DH was from Muirhouse, she was from Morningside (about as middle-class as you get Grin). He was a smart cookie, that was clear, but had a self-destructive streak. He fell head over heels for her when she was 17 and he was a few years older. They got married when she was 18 and have gone from strength to strength - he got masses of qualifications and qualified as a social worker and now sits on lots of childrens panels and Child protection hearings.
My friend works in community education so they have similar career choices.
They have been happily married for 22 years and have two children.

I tend to hold them up as an example of how you can succeed whatever your background (she comes from broken home, loving mother, chaotic house, absent father) in a career AND a marriage.

We had a lovely flat in Leith, but if DD1 didn't get into St. Mary's, which was over-subscribed, then it would have been Leith Primary followed by Leith Academy.

So, unable to afford rent in a better catchment area, we left Edinburgh.

'That's what depresses me the most - the pride in being a violent moron. When did that become something to proud of??'

YY. It seems to be a rather worrying trend across this society in general.

Personally, too, I think Buckfast should have the caffeine removed or be banned in general.

We spent a fortune moving to sciennes catchment..then DD was born with severe SN and can't go there..sod's law!

Report
expatinscotland · 18/05/2011 13:36

Sad

We didn't move till DD1 was in nursery school and it became abundantly clear that it was going to be a potential, possibly serious problem, the catchment area.

We are often asked when we are 'moving back' as DH and the girls are from there and all his family are there.

But it's not affordable, unfortunately.

MArvin and dayna were shopping in primark yesterday (sauchiehall street) the friend who saw them said everyone was gabbing away to them and that they looked ok, although dayna was just out of jail supposedly.
I actually sit and laugh at this program, tho it dosent look good for this area we all know there are loads more like them all over the country and its just the people not the place, its what you make of it!
the funniest person has got to be ma cunningham! cant believe the things that woman hits out with! no shame!
and kay is just a disgrace - look after your own kids before taking in any waifs!
iv already seen the next 2 you can find them on you tube, features quite a decent family campaigning for youth clubs n things.
