Psychological thriller with John Simm, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman and Clair Goose. - I'm looking forward to this, it looks really good. Creator is Paul Abbot (Shameless, Clocking Off, and State of Play) although it doesn't look as if he did the actual writing. Can't wait Smile

As a kind of therapy for the end of series limbo we will all be hit with later tonight Grin, I thought I'd mention that another thriller is starting on thursday which looks as if it might be good, called 'The Shadow Line'.
It has the added bonus of metaphorical nicotine patch Christopher Eccleston (for those of us who will be suffering from chippy northern actor withdrawal symptoms Grin)

Oh golly, saw the trailer for that Kurri, it's a definite in this house!!!

We aren't going out much at the moment, so these really good TV series are keeping us from going crazy staying in!!!!!

NoWayNoHow · 03/05/2011 17:34

I did not know about "The Shadow Line" kurri thank you for helping me add something to my already bulging Sky+ harddrive!!

I'm loving this too and looking forward to tonight. I'm also a big Olivia fan, having a total girl-crush on her from Rev Grin Fabulous!

Deaddei · 03/05/2011 18:56

I missed the first one but loved last nights.
It reminds me of the Red RIding trilogy.

SingOut · 03/05/2011 19:42

Yes, good point - there is something vaguely Red Riding-ish about Exile. Though obviously this is better Grin. Looking forward to see how things play out/tie up tonight.

foxinsocks · 03/05/2011 19:56

Olivia Colman was absolutely fabulous in 2012 and Rev. Loved her in those. Think she is brilliant in this too.

But it's Jim Broadbent who shines out for me. Isn't he wonderful. And I agree - not enough about this awful disease in modern TV dramas especially when it's something that touches so many of our lives. The whole cast is great tbh. I'm really enjoying it and I'm normally someone who falls asleep in 9 o clock dramas!

toastandmarmiterocks · 03/05/2011 20:41

I can't wait, I'm totally gripped although I do agree the start was a bit slow. Of course there are some very important real issues being dealt with and I applaud the makers of the programme for doing this however I have been dreaming of John Simm all day! I never used to fancy him but he is "aging" very nicely and seems to have bulked out a little bit?? Or do i just fancy the bad boy image?! Sorry to lower the tone...

corygal · 03/05/2011 20:51

i guess drama and dementia don't mix - odd, because at first you'd think that the disease's gripping random behavours and utterances, not to mention its Oscar-worthy scene-stealing qualities in real life would give some writers a massive help. Pants off in the baked beans aisle anyone? That really is shocking - one of the few things left to shock us.

Leer at your OAP daughter and slap and kick like a raging toddler when she rejects you? Leave her shaking with pain and fright locked into her own shed... while you watch Cash in the Attic and pee the couch blissfully oblivious? Beats the Gallaghers into a cocked hat, Mr Abbott. And all before elevenses on Senile St.

We do need a dementia drama. Why isn't there one? Maybe people feel it would be tasteless for a show to make dramatic use of the psychiatric cabaret sufferers put on day and night. Maybe the idea that there's no easy destination - whether /person/disease/govt. - to the blame for the horror is hard to write round. But I can't see that necessarily has to be the case.

Especially when dementia patients aren't the only ones who suffer from the disease. Not representing dementia seems a lot more tasteless somehow - and ignoring the plight of carers is almost impossible to defend.

Ooh, I feel miles better for that rant. Only 11 minutes to go - hope you're ready for your close-up, Mr Simm. Wish Mr Abbott and the sciptwriters had been a bit readier for theirs....

HattiFattner · 03/05/2011 20:54

i am enjoying this series - I find the characters very meaty and with plenty of depth, and a decent pace and a good amount of suspense. Bravo BBC !

However, the continuity errors are distracting - one minute the old boy is running through the snow. Next minute, John SImmis getting into his car in spring sunshine. Then its snowing again outside the caravan. Then its not when he is out at the pub - sloppy.

sherbetpips · 03/05/2011 21:02

Don't dare to watch it, my dad is starting to show the first signs of dementia, don't want to see what's coming, head in the sand I know x

bobkate · 03/05/2011 21:29

Does anyone know if this will be repeated at any point. Stupid sky plus was set to record 2 things already so I've missed the first half and was really looking forward to seeing the last episode. I know I can get it on iplayer but if it's repeated on normal telly, I'd much rather watch it on the telly. So cross I've missed it.

CarrieOakey · 03/05/2011 21:39

Bloody hell Sad Shock

bobkate · 03/05/2011 21:43

oh crap, can't risk seeing what's happened on here, will have to watch on iplayer!

Curiousmama · 03/05/2011 22:00

Exactly Sad

moggiek · 03/05/2011 22:02

Extraordinarily moving! That final scene with John Simm and Jim Broadbent was heartbreaking.

squashedfly · 03/05/2011 22:03

Oh it was just so sad. They did it brilliantly.

thebestisyettocome · 03/05/2011 22:04

Absolutely excellent.

I bet Hollywood buy the rights.

BitOfFun · 03/05/2011 22:05

I deliberately haven't read any posts from this evening on this thread, just in case, but I missed tonight's episode. Does anybody know what time it's likely to become available on iplayer?

KurriKurri · 03/05/2011 22:06

That final scene with his dad really got to me, so sad and moving. What a great series - I predict awards.

squashedfly · 03/05/2011 22:08

Bitoffun It's normally within the hour I think. (of it ending).

SpangledPandemonium · 03/05/2011 22:10

I really enjoyed this but one thing is bothering me - why did his father beat him so badly? It seemed an awfully brutal response no matter what the circumstance
