Psychological thriller with John Simm, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman and Clair Goose. - I'm looking forward to this, it looks really good. Creator is Paul Abbot (Shameless, Clocking Off, and State of Play) although it doesn't look as if he did the actual writing. Can't wait Smile

Thank you Anonymousbird. I have to say the old man randomly taking off his clothes/trousers is close to home Sad Although my dad never has the outbursts of violence, but I know some people do.

DH and I are totally hooked, can't wait to see how it all pans out tomorrow. From the preview it looks as if it's going to be a very packed episode.

Best thing on TV for ages (other than TOWIE of course!!), Olivia Coleman is fab and DH has actually managed to stay away for each episode so that says it all.

(Claire Goose has a very strange nose - has she had somethig done to it?and what programme was the wanky husband in where he was really lovely and his wife died or was dying??)

diddl · 03/05/2011 09:01

I think it´s great.

Although the name Cleaver-can´t help thinking of Hugh Grant in Bridget Jone´s DiaryBlush

So he´s really Tom Cleaver-and the money was paid why?-and his dad isn´t his biological father?

Also, do we know how him mum died?

Wolfgirl · 03/05/2011 09:07

Morning all, I missed the first episode but could not find it on BBC iplayer. Am I missing something \ doing something wrong perhaps, or is it there, and I have to search harder?

thanks in advance Smile

Punkatheart · 03/05/2011 09:37

Anon - please can you pass on to Olivia how absolutely superb she is in this drama. She has created a character in which you can see the disappointment, the frustrations of her life. The relationship with her brother is so plausible. It is an extremely adept and layered performance. I would hope for an award or two to come her way for this...

I could gush all day about her - the drama is so well-written and deliciously addictive.

AnonymousBird · 03/05/2011 09:59

Look out for her in the Thatcher movie - she is cast as Carol Thatcher, Meryl Streep is Maggie. Not sure when it is to be released, later this year I think.

KurriKurri · 03/05/2011 10:27

Wolfgirl episode 1

episode 2

I'll look out for the movie AnonymousBird, I can imagine Olivia being great as Carol Thatcher.

It just gets better Grin Looking forward to tonight.

HarrietJones · 03/05/2011 12:15

Fantastic.

Tell Olivia she has a v big fan base on here!

TragicallyRoyallyHip · 03/05/2011 12:21

I have this recorded, hopefully get to watch it tonight. Looking forward to it as I love John Simm!

gingercat12 · 03/05/2011 12:22

I missed the first episode, but loved the second one.

Another fan of Olivia Colman, although I mainly saw her in comedy like the Rev and Twenty twelve. She is superb.

I also generally watch anything with John Simm in it.

Jim Broadbent is also great.

DH could not believe me when I told him about the cast. How could we miss the adverts for this programme?!

LiliesandVeuve · 03/05/2011 12:39

only seen the first episode, but excellent I thought.
love john Simm, but only knew about it because I heard him on Radio 2 when we were driving last week

corygal · 03/05/2011 13:42

So what's going to happen tonight?

My guesses - well, apart from the educated guess that the denouement will be vigorous and exhausting: -

We know Mr Insta-villain Eyebrows (Metzler) has been Up To No Good at the local mental hospital. Could he have been:

  1. Hiding his pregnant gf/mistress there under a section and quietly selling/giving the baby to Mr and Mrs Jim Broadbent.
  2. Or locking up angry husband of said lady to save allegations of adultery getting out & ruining fine career. Handover ditto for babe Simm.
  3. And/or using patients as guinea pigs for drugs trials... which turn out to be for Alzheimers treatments.

As well as Simm's old schoolfriend doing something unreliable & prob violent, the Dad taking A Turn For the Worse, Dad's Red Herrings - Dementia or Dvine Wisdom? etc., Olivia Maybe Losing the Baby, etc.

I hope it doesn't get too hysterical at the end - even the good dramas do; and that's not mentioning the expected Overdose of Significant Looks from John Simm's Burning Soul.

I shall be glued to screen imagining getting vigorous with Simm, however.

KurriKurri · 03/05/2011 13:51

Ooh - interesting theories Corygirl Grin - I am favouring number one I think.

I am looking forward to Simm's significant looks, he's great Grin

stumbled upon this on the website - I love a good psychological thriller! I watched it just before going to bed and was so depressed about the carer aspect I had to watch something else.
DH spent the first 1/2hr trying to work out what car Tom was driving! he was only 1/2 watching the first bit then sat up and took notice when he saw the car. honestly!

corygal · 03/05/2011 14:16

I hope the Daughter (our Olivia) gets some solo screen time in the last episode. Her role seems to include being the Carer for the whole drama as well as looking after Jim Broadbent.

So far she's been allowed to be nowt but a daughter and a sister in her role. She's used as a foil for Soulful Simm and as straight man to Mad Dad's emotional cabaret.

But her plight as a carer would be much more interesting, and no less dramatic or heart-wrenching, if it had got room to breathe a bit in the script. Olivia gives it her best shot - creating a credible whole person from a set of dry prompts to others - which is one hell of an achivement.

Yet the role should have been grown, if Paul Abbott, lauded chronicler of our times etc, is really interested in new types of experiences and lives in modern Britain. Carers are a growing breed, and all that. Their stories are every bit as surprising - and can be as horrifying - as any tv-play cliche.

auntevil · 03/05/2011 14:16

Another one that's really enjoying it. It's good to see alzheimers portrayed in a way that shows all sides fairly.
It did amuse me with Jim Broadbent's character taking his clothes off - my mum used to do that. What is it with the clothes?! Grin I'm also the sister that got left to do the work - with a brother that waltzes in. So, i'm watching it, nodding my head, with a smile on my face. The thriller part is bubbling along nicely too.
I think i'm favouring no. 1 as well.

doings · 03/05/2011 14:20

I'm not sure I'm with you bacon on the half sister thingy but definitely thought that a investigative journo would have jumped at the chance of inside info in the nuthouse. He seemed to just let it pass - case of spinning it out for three episodes I guess.

Not sure about the mystery Cleaver but think that Mez-whatever councillor might be his dad. Reckon he was rogering the poor mentals.

Actual sister says she only meets people in the NHS hence dating dentists - does this have a subtle connection?

It's a good 'un.

Punkatheart · 03/05/2011 14:41

Corygal - some very intelligent observations there. My mother was a carer and even did a research project on it. She has been to the Houses of Parliament and get very passionate on carers' issues.

I can't help thinking about what Tom said about her hair being red. Feel also that she has been keeping an eye on him. Also his ex Susan killed herself by drinking bleach. Lots of little niggly things.

Loving it but please don't let it degenerate into ITV style death and mayhem hysteria...

NoWayNoHow · 03/05/2011 15:23

naturalbaby DH did that too - I kept telling him it was a Lotus, but he didn't believe me cos it had 4 seats Hmm

Absolutely love it, think it's so well acted and understated and plausible. Can't wait to see Timothy west give those Evil Eyebrows a good wiggling, and will be perving over assessing the acting skills of John Simm very closely.

Highlander · 03/05/2011 15:36

It's a shame the dad's dementia isn't portrayed a little better. The awful bits are talked about, but we don't actually see them.

HarrietJones · 03/05/2011 15:59

I think Toms missus is 'dodgy

AnonymousBird · 03/05/2011 16:02

I am so looking forward to tonight's episode....

it was a Lotus, wasn't it?!

Ormirian · 03/05/2011 16:25

Brilliant!

corygal · 03/05/2011 16:30

Looked like a Lotus Excel to me ie an old 'un. My dad had one. As children, we used to have to run along behind it on family outings to the shops in case we got mud on the seats. I was finally allowed entry at the age of 23, I believe.

Not anywhere near as good as the Lotus Esprit. In shag terms (the Esprit is that fun), Excel = Jim Broadbent, Esprit = Simm.
