Have never watched this film, so sat down tonight looking forward to watching it, heard it is supposed to be really good.

Is it me or is it really cheesy with some bad acting? And the accents seem to be all over the place.

Can't decide if its good or not !

I thought the point of the film was to be seriously cheesy. Please don't tell me it's not Shock

Am watching it at the moment - Tanya on the beach. The lip synching to Does Your Mother Know is SO bad!

SeaStrand · 09/04/2011 21:37

haha it makes me want to go to the island though. The part where she sings about Sophie growing up gets me every time...I watched it with rolling tears at the cinema.

usualsuspect · 09/04/2011 21:37

That was my favourite bit Grin

usualsuspect · 09/04/2011 21:38

The Does your mother know bit

CointreauVersial · 09/04/2011 21:41

Oh, it's sooooo cheesy! In a cheese-tastic way.

The DDs and I danced round the living room to the title sequence at the end, then I sang "Thank you for the Music" several times, while DH blocked his ears.

DH only comment was "that's two hours of my life I'll never get back....."

ebbandflow · 09/04/2011 21:44

I watched it for the first time with my 6 year old dd she loved it, and I thought it was brilliant in a really cheesy way. I admit it did start really badly though.

hocuspontas · 09/04/2011 21:59

JulieWalter's outfit at the end (Dancing Queen) is OUTRAGEOUS! I LOVE it!

lili2010 · 10/04/2011 06:41

I actually bought it on DVD because somebody told me it was good. It has a great cast too. I thought it was so disappointing and so cringeworthy in places I found it hard to watch. I did try to love it in a 'crap' way too but couldn't even do that!

Bomper · 10/04/2011 10:43

Think you can get away with the 'over-the-topness' on stage but it just doesn't translate to film at all!! HATED all the cackling cronies of 'Donna' - made my toes curl. Not for me I am afraid.

Bomper · 10/04/2011 10:45

Love the Abba music though!!

onEastarEggIGraze · 10/04/2011 10:49

Any parts where there is no music are absolute gash. The only time I've ever sneered at Julie Walters. But yes, Dominic Cooper on the beach is hot

franke I am now snurking at the mental image of Hugh F-W 'doing' some sour dough Wink

sharbie · 10/04/2011 12:43

oooooo lucky you easteregg what was he like at school?

onEastarEggIGraze · 10/04/2011 13:42

He was very cute, cheeky and a sweet boy - was a couple of years below me, so much shorter than he is now Grin

I always enjoy seeing him onscreen because as far as I know he's still a nice guy and it's good to see him doing well, but wasn't prepared for the rush of 'ooooh!' that "Lay All Your Love On Me" engendered Blush

sharbie · 10/04/2011 17:59

he he Smile his personality comes across on screen so well - he reminds me of an old boyfriend who was half him and half andrew lincoln

onEastarEggIGraze · 10/04/2011 18:03

And this guy is an old boyfriend because...? Grin

sharbie · 10/04/2011 18:05

hmmmmmmmmmmm

sharbie · 10/04/2011 18:05
Grin
Bunbaker · 10/04/2011 18:26

I love it because it is so cheesy. I first saw it in a packed cinema three years ago and the atmosphere was fantastic. I don't think it translates very well to TV/DVD, but I still love the film. DD loves it and knows the words to all the songs

Becaroooo · 10/04/2011 18:32

I love Abba AND Meryl Streep so was really looking forward to this, but this film is dreadful....bad acting, bad singing (Colin firth anyone???) and just cringe worthy.

I have heard the stage show is very good.....

BendyBob · 10/04/2011 18:43

It's ghastly in a car crash film type of way. So bad it's good. Piers Brosnan singing ?? Lordy Shock

I cringed in the cinema when laydees of a certain age - ie MY age Blush strated dancing in the aisles.

But the song about your daughter growing up and time slipping by is Sad

bruffin · 10/04/2011 18:56

I love it can't normally stand meryl streep, but something works about this film.
It probably helps i am half greek and the ladies in Dancing Queen look like some of my relatives Grin

itssnotfunny · 10/04/2011 19:02

its fab the best feel good film ever, makes me laugh/ cry/ cringe and sing out loud - what more do you want?

ouryve · 10/04/2011 19:08

It was so awful, we turned it off after 10 minutes, even though there was nothing else on.

sharbie · 10/04/2011 19:33

my dad said he loved it - bizarre

braveandcrazy · 10/04/2011 19:48

Of course the songs are brilliant, but they can't make up for the fact that the film is utter crap, not cheesy crap, just crap crap. The singing is terrible and the story is boring. And this is coming from someone who loves Abba, musicals, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep (in that order).

If you like the way they make the songs into stories, just get yourself a DVD of Abba's videos and indulge yourself in an evening of beautiful singing, songs and storytelling, the video to Winner Takes it All would make anyone cry.
