Remind me never to visit Grassington. Stupid programme, whoever wins will never be properly accepted and don't tell me that none of those racists are seething over someone just being handed a £300k cottage for free.

A curry house!? OMG! Next thing you know, Tesco will be trying to build a superstore on the outskirts of town. It'll be anarchy! This country's going to the dogs.

expatinscotland · 02/04/2011 17:06

This thread's even funnier than the one from a person who wasn't even a Londoner but was all black-affronted that Shock, some people don't like London and even have the brass balls to say so!

usualsuspect · 02/04/2011 17:07

I bet theres a secret poundshop

eumaeus · 02/04/2011 17:07

you missed my reference to the 'racist' aspect of the programme. where it has been suggested that people of colour are seen as weird and wonderful wonders. we have a bangladeshi family right in the middle of the square (owners of the curry house), and many other non-white people.

'I bet theres a secret poundshop'

Or a JobCentre.

eumaeus · 02/04/2011 17:14

haha. no poundshop (but great idea!) and no jobcentre. unemployment (in my experience) in rural communities tends to be lower than that of cities.

eumaeus · 02/04/2011 17:16

talking of cities. the programme also suggests its in the sticks. lol its not, its a small town just outside leeds/bradford. there are hundreds like this up and down britain. the good thing is that this programme is bringing fresh genes into the place. the bad thing is how it's been portrayed by channel4.

Pancakeflipper · 02/04/2011 20:24

Do any of you recall a programme on TV in the 80's ( I think) called The Village (I think). Set in the South (I think). Deffo not Yorkshire.

It was on about 3pmish time.

There was a female called Simmy who seemed ditzy and crap with relationships and there was a local police officer on her bike called Sue. Well she is one of the 'spinners' in this TV programme.

Apologies - you have just wasted about 5 seconds of your life reading this trivial crap.

WereOffToSeeTheWizard · 03/04/2011 10:24

I've heard that the couple who win don't accept the prize as the town is so bigoted and narrowminded.

Fimbo · 03/04/2011 22:45

Jeez sorry Expat, didn't mean to cause all this strife for you!

I loved the idea of this and enjoyed the first couple. Starting to get a bit wearing now, though. Particularly when a bit of racist / homophobic / window-cleaner-ist tripe is prefaced by "A lot of people here might think ..."
