Children's programmes you watched that you think it's a shame your children don't get to watch

Children's TV just doesn't seem to be as good (possible that this is because I'm not a child anymore but I mostly think it's because it simply isn't!)

I was thinking through this today the BBC seemed to have loads of children's dramas on that were just amazing and I can't think of any today. I for one loved (to name a few) Box of Delights, Moondial and The December Rose.

Programmes I think it a shame they don't do anymore would include Gruey, Jim'll Fix It, Really Wild Show and Why Don't You.

(In reality my question in the subject is just a long winded way of asking what programmes you likes as a child)

The old Heidi series was brilliant.

onimolap · 07/02/2011 17:28

Oh, and Catweazel - I used to be terrified!

nickelbabe · 07/02/2011 17:28

I've just googled him and he went to work on Beadle's about (and other such twaddle) but is now a theatrical agent.

Bucharest · 07/02/2011 17:29

Heidi is still very much prime time here in Italy, as is Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna.

Anyone remember Timeslip?

onimolap · 07/02/2011 17:29

Needanewname: Hong Kong Phooey is out on DVD - got it recently for DCs. Also have some Dangermouse - on VHS, so not sure if it's currently available. I love watching them!

NormanTheForeman · 07/02/2011 17:31

Ah, I had no idea what he was doing now.

Does anyone also remember a series that was on arounfd the same time as the Tomorrow People and Ace of Wands. It had a girl in it called Frederica (part of a group of kids), and in one episode she had to pretend to faint, to distract someone (I think it was in an office somewhere) so that one of her friends coulddo something without being noticed. Sorry can't remember any more about it than that!

coldtits · 07/02/2011 17:31

Mike And Angelo

And Simon and the Witch

NormanTheForeman · 07/02/2011 17:31

I remember Timeslip - I still have the book!

coldtits · 07/02/2011 17:33

And maid marian was comic genius.

stovies · 07/02/2011 17:44

Needanewname · 07/02/2011 17:53

THanks for that onimolap - will get onto amazon right now!!!!

DDs love Penelope Pitstop, though it does mean DH keeps repeating his Hooded Claw impersonation!

Stilla · 07/02/2011 18:06

Maid marion was brilliant .

AnyoneForPimms · 07/02/2011 18:55

I used to love black beauty but record breakers was brilliant . Roy castle was a legend.

PureBloodMuggle · 07/02/2011 19:03

I think early years stuff was more gentle, and folksy when I was young - Bod, Flumps, Bagpuss, Ivor the Engine - it was very simple but with intriguing bits and modern stuff seems bright and gimmicky by comparison.

I also loved:

Rentaghost
Dangermouse
Count Duckula
Trap Door
Marmalade Atkins
Johnny Briggs

and lots of dramas like Chocky, the Baker Street Boys and all sorts of things.

Modern stuff doesn't seem as good but that's probably the nostalgia talking, though I did see an excellent comedy programme that had Marcus Brigstocke in and I thought, we would have loved that as kids.

conkersdropped · 07/02/2011 19:14

Grange Hill
Record Breakers
Chalky's Children
Moon dial

doonhamer · 07/02/2011 19:17

Crackerjack I loved it

doonhamer · 07/02/2011 19:19

Got too excited and posted too quickly.

Rentaghost
Hong Kong phooey
Bagpuss
Ivor the Engine

The Wombles (I love Bernard Cribbins)

I will shamelessly admit that I've bought Super Ted for my two to watch and they love it. I suspect Amazon will have a few more visits from me yet as they get older for things such as Thundercats, Bananaman etc Smile

I loved Grange Hill.

They still do a Jackanory don't they? Confused

Floella Benjamin was only saying the other day she thought childrens tv was in crisis. However I do think CBeebies have some good stuff here and there.

Teaandcakeplease · 07/02/2011 19:24

"The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe series" I have this original series on video. Love it, brings back such great memories.

tothesea · 07/02/2011 19:31

The programme with the talking rubber fish was probably the 'Singing ringing tree', freaked me out as a child. I have seen it as an adult and the effects are pretty funny now but it still has a very eerie air to it and brought back very strong memories
There always seemed to be lots of Czech/Eastern European stuff - all really dark and brooding - I loved it!. The little mole was Krizck or something, you can see it on Youtube.
Another Tomorrow people fan, I was seven too but I liked Kai and the one who was in flintlock! I loved the books as well

Bucharest · 07/02/2011 20:08

Oh, will have to google singing ringing tree, bloody scary fish.

Pogles wood scared me as well. And something that lived in Rupert's Wood. Heggarty? Haggerty? Some little cackling sprite thing.

KickButtowski · 07/02/2011 20:19

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN - best prog I ever watched.
