I can't see another thread for tonight's episode, so here we go.

Pull up a chair!

Romany gypsies and Irish travellers are different. Romany gypsies don't come from Ireland so wouldn't have Irish accents.

Vakant · 25/01/2011 22:00

The overt sexualisation of the children is making me feel sick.

Jimmychasesangels · 25/01/2011 22:00

jenandberry I agree
I grew up in area that had a lot of gypsys and have never seen anything like this, it is normal shock tve.

Normantebbit · 25/01/2011 22:01

It is a problem though. Everytime a council wants to build a traveller site settled populations object and the travellers are forced to move on.

But they don't help themselves either - flytipping, letting horses roam on motorways ...

It's a shame gor them

Sassybeast · 25/01/2011 22:01

But how much of the issue with planning permission is because there is so much fear and prejudice about travellers ? And an automatic objection by NIMBYs to ANY application from travellers to build on the land that they have bought and paid for ?

BitOfFun · 25/01/2011 22:01

DP owns two acres of land on the moon. It didn't cost much though because he can't build on it.

TrillianAstra · 25/01/2011 22:01

The mum said that the little girl felt prettier with makeup on, and she told her that she looked pretty without it (then the little girl said no).

LauraSmurf · 25/01/2011 22:01

RIght now going to watch latest episode of sun, sex and suspicious parents from sky+ bye til next week!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 25/01/2011 22:02

DH is Irish and he says he never saw anything like this growing up, and he lived near a traveller settlement. This must be a recent phenomenon. But those little girls writhing...eugh

countless · 25/01/2011 22:03

oh dear looks like a whole hour of 'grabbin' next week..

Valpollicella · 25/01/2011 22:03

The little girls are so sexual Sad

I'm sorry Jen. I may have misheard. Apologies.

I appreciate that you know first hand this may not be the norm and it can't be comfortable to watch this being played out against your culture, knowing it's an extreme.

LauraSmurf · 25/01/2011 22:03

There are very strict rules for planning permissions. No cultures are listed on planning applications. I have family who work in planning permissions, it is very strict for everyone in certain areas. EG greenbelts

CaveMum · 25/01/2011 22:04

Ladies, I thank you for your company this evening and for making me laugh.

Till next week!

can i ask, do tehy make those neon outfits for teh little girls or is tehre actually somewhere you can buy 'dresses' like that for children.

it felt so wrong to see children dancing liek that Sad

jenandberry · 25/01/2011 22:05

I agree the flytipping etc is wrong. It is wrong to turn up and park on people's land.

But where are these people supposed to go? As Sassy says people have an image of travellers (not helped by programmes like this) and block any attempts to set up regulated sites. People cannot just change their way of life overnight. From experience it is a huge adjustment to go from a caravan to a permanent home.

southeastastra · 25/01/2011 22:06

jeysus bet this whole thread is one big judgeyness wreck

hate tv like this

me23 · 25/01/2011 22:06

yes I know romany gypsies are not from ireland Hmm, somewhere earlier someone commented whether gypsies are offended at the title of the show because they are only showing irish travellers but in this episode info said pat was romany so wanted to clarify if they were romany or not.

rachelkarengreene · 25/01/2011 22:07

Ladies, you are fabulous company - same time next week Smile

prettypurpledaisy · 25/01/2011 22:07

They are dance costumes which you can buy at various places on the internet. Too revealing for little ones at a competition imo but as evening outfits Shock

DanceInTheDark · 25/01/2011 22:08

Dale Farm is on Greenbelt land is it not?

RunningTap · 25/01/2011 22:08

Can't wait for next weeks!

glastocat · 25/01/2011 22:08

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows, I live in Cork and can assure you this does happen.

jenandberry · 25/01/2011 22:08

lol Bitoffun.

I have actually become part of the ratrace in order to live out my traveller dreams. I chose to teach, because I knew it woudl give me a long stretch in the summer when I could go off on my travels.

I wanted the land, the animals and alternative lifestyle but worked out I was not going to get that by following the lead of those around me. So I married well, worked hard to get my career and now manage to blend the two lives well.

pooka · 25/01/2011 22:09

Re: the objection to traveller sites - they are so so often set down in the Green Belt. Prime land, statutorily protected. Travellers sites LOOK hideous. They can completely ruin the appearance of open land that is conceived as a means of preventing urban sprawl.

And then if they get permission for hardstandings, plinths around mobile homes and static caravans, then why shouldn't someone 5 mins away who wants to build 5 houses? It sets a precedent for erosion of the green belt.

There are several sites in my local borough that are designated for travellers. The problem is that they don't necessarily want to live there. They want to live where they choose. Which is understandable, but not at the expense of established planning objectives. The problem with the official sites is that they are imposed rather than evolving, which means that the travellers moving in have no control over the other travellers who make up their community. There can be disturbances, fighting and feuding.

I have sympathy for them. Health and education stats are woeful. But I also have seen first hand the impact of an unlawful settlement on areas of countryside. Not just the mess, but the drip-drip-drip permanent additions - toilet block buildings, tarmac paths and drives. Conservatories on statics (!). All of these things are by their nature "inappropriate development" in planning law.

MickeyMixer · 25/01/2011 22:11

Little on talking about her 'lispick' was adorable!
