Aw, Lydia was incredible. I just read on the website that she called her baby girl Evelyn. Such a gorgeous name, and what a cool mama she was!

Cleofartra · 18/01/2011 10:23

Loved this weeks programme. That African couple - the mum was just so gorgeous. Actually they were all lovely. All of them. Even the dad with the phone. And the midwives. And the cleaners. Oh, and the babies!

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Smile

i expect this has been already said but haven't had chance to read whole thread, but how annoying was Maxwell and his running commentary of the trace machine, "going down, going down, down, down, down still going down" pass me a wet fish i need to slap him!

higgle · 18/01/2011 10:53

I had DS1 in hospital in a birth pool and just took all my clothes off because that seemed the natural thing to do - hope I didn't embarass anyone but the brochure for the hospital showed people without clothes in the pool, so I just assumed that was how you did it.

LittleDonkin · 18/01/2011 11:01

I would have loved a labour like Lydia's! I really wanted to have a water birth but my DD decided she couldnt wait for her first poop so I had to be strapped to a monitor and a huge pad stuffed between my legs so the midwife could monitor my fluid which meant I couldn't even walk around!

Worst of all they put me in the room with the birthing pool staring at me! Angry

littleoak · 18/01/2011 11:14

What a great programme. I wonder whether there is actually one baby born every minute!!

I want Lydia's birth too but never have enough time!!
This is my labour ward for number 4, will be strange going in and maybe recognising the midwife from the TV rather than having seen her in RL!! I want the lovely, softly spoken, slightly older lady with glasses, her voice makes you feel wonderfully calm!

happycamper1 · 18/01/2011 12:31

Me too Little Donkin. I wanted water birth. Got the room with the pool but had meconium. Was still able to move around with telementary monitoring.

HelenLG · 18/01/2011 13:27

What labour ward is it film in? I only ask because the last couple, the lady with the pink nightie looked really familar, but I'm so sure that it's not the ward I was on...

eaglewings · 18/01/2011 13:35

I kept my top on when having a water birth so that I could show the photos to people after of the first hour with my baby.

I had a Tshirt on when I had Ds and the water made it see through. I bikini top, well actually a very lovey bfing top was much better with DD, photos better.

TBH when in the water what was wearing was not an issue, I was oblivious

Carikube · 18/01/2011 13:41

Just to echo what others have said, this is the labour ward they're filming in...I had DD1 there after a failed attempt to deliver at the MLU in the New Forest and then had DD2 on the MW-led unit upstairs where I was on all fours having been encouraged to move around and get in to a position that worked. I ended up in theatre due to retained placenta, having a GA and blood transfusion and I can only say how fantastic everyone was there both times round - they always kept me fully informed of my choices etc and never did anything without my permission first...

ManicMother7777 · 18/01/2011 15:14

I must also stick up for the PAH - I had two very good experiences there.

kuckingfunt · 18/01/2011 17:04

Just caught up with this. Thought it was a really good episode. I loved Lydia's birth, it was quite calm and it was good to show such a good experience of a water birth.

FanjolinaJolie · 18/01/2011 17:15

Lovely births, calm and chilled mummies and beautiful babies...what more could you ask for?!

Can't wait until next week.

MilaMae · 18/01/2011 19:07

All births are lovely calm, chilled mummy or not.

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/01/2011 19:12

I don't know, I wouldn't describe ds's birth as lovely by a long shot! Some births are horrible, traumatic and disempowering.

hugglymugly · 18/01/2011 19:27

I enjoyed this episode more than the previous one.

But there was one moment where I had to pause and rewind. I have closed-captioning enabled, which is often useful for documentaries like this. The camera was focussed on the whiteboard in the nurses' room, showing the name of Tendayi Kuzive, while the midwife was briefing another midwife. But closed-captioning translated her name as "ten-day conceivee". There have been other occasions when closed-captioning gets things wrong, but that was extraordinary.

MilaMae · 18/01/2011 20:10

Some women have traumatic births but would still describe it as lovely. Not sure viewers should be deciding wether a birth is lovely or not.

Little bit Hmm at the vitriol leveled at the screaming mum last week but the oooos and ahhhs this week just because this weeks mums weren't loud or shit scared basically.

Since when did we all have to give birth cool and calm with little noise in order to have a lovely birth?

It's just a show,we're not there and more importantly we're not the ones pushing out something the size of a melon. If a mum wants to scream like a banshee she can as far as I'm concerned-it's her birth, she's the one in agony and it doesn't make it any less lovely when the baby pops out.

Clunge · 18/01/2011 20:35

I had a horrid time with DD2. I hemorrhaged several times, she was born with the cord round her neck and not breathing. I would describe it as anything but lovely. Horrendous just about does it.

The screaming banshee was a bloody drama queen of that there is no doubt. I can not for the life of me see how her screaming like that would have made her contractions anymore bearable.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 18/01/2011 20:49

Why one earth would screaming be good for anyone? At one point she was trying to climb off the bed (in between screaming, and terrifying the young girl in the next room). If you're screaming hysterically and uncontrollably, you're not in control of your breathing or your body - surely that must make it harder for you and the midwife who's trying to support you. Last weeks screamer seemed pretty determined not to do anything to help herself, and iirc the interview prior to the birth seemed to show someone who was determined to make as make of a drama as possible.

CrawlingInMySkin · 18/01/2011 21:51

I enjoyed both last week and this weeks. But in defence both times I wanted to be on my back I knew all fours was considered better but I felt uncomfortable like that, I gave birth both times on my back no stitches maybe they wanted to lie on their back, the mw encourgaged me onto all fours on DC1 but I didn't like it.

CrawlingInMySkin · 18/01/2011 21:55

Oh and Lydias partner went on the FB page and said baby Evelyn is 4 months old now and how wonderful and amazed he was by Lydia.

Northernlurker · 18/01/2011 22:03

Clearly last week's woman was in pain - aren't we all? From my perspective though I thought she was thrashing about far too much to be in extremis at that point. When you are in deep, deep pain you don't move all that much if at all. I think she made a choice to behave like that and it certainly made the labour more difficult for partner and parents. In the interview afterwards she said she would do it again - it was not an involuntary response. Likewise this week's women all made a choice to labour in a certain way and they made plenty of noise when they needed to.
