Jool's Hootenanny......who'll be watching?

Curiousmama · 31/12/2010 12:04

Me and dp love it Smile Last year we were both ill so stayed in to watch it all. This year we're supposed to be going out but may stay in instead and watch Jool's and his gang?

Wonder if the pub landlord will be on this year? He was a right arse last year. And watching him and Lenny Henry fawn over Duffy was so funny. (or have I got the years mixed up there?)

not much of a line up this year tho is it

purepurple · 01/01/2011 09:53

I did enjoy it. I too thought that Alison Moyet sounded awful, loved the Secret Sisters, thought that Rumur had an amazing voice but was an awful song. I thought that Bellowhead were fantastic, Vampire Weekend were passable, loved Plan B, was scared by scary looking Wanda Jackson. I really don't like Kylie on a good day, but thought she was really awful. She really can't sing that well, can she?

Well I was distinctly underwhelmed by the whole thing - Wanda jackson was really terrible, no one sand particularly well and the only ones posessed of much talent were Bellowhead - whose material was pure 1970's folk club- so a bit of a turn off. Celebrity guests really unfunny and Jools looking fat and bored. This is so sad as every previous year I've really loved it - Corrine Bailey Rae and Amy Winehouse were both on before they were really famous. DS1 & 2 went to bed and refuse to watch it next year.

southeastastra · 01/01/2011 12:20

it was dull - we only watched as there was nothing else on after the fireworks - the totp 80s special that was on after was do much better

CybilScissorhands · 01/01/2011 12:22

As soon as Joools gets his bloody boogie woogie piano out I turn off

ALL those songs sound the same

panettoinydog · 01/01/2011 12:37

lol - agree

I find jools so irritating

Poor line-up last night so didn't watch

Jellykat · 01/01/2011 14:42

Yes the totp 80s special was fantastic! Tears for Fears,Wham,Madness- brilliant!

Wondered if Jools and company were dumbed down by lack of alcohol, and new BBC paranoia? The whole programmes' atmosphere was akin to being slapped around the face with a wet fish..

Curiousmama · 02/01/2011 00:11

Ended up going out the the navy club and got to bed at 4am. Watched Hootenanny today on iplayer, was underwhelmed. Liked the robot best. Kylie looks like a waxwork. Moyet poor. Rumer good voice but eeerily Carpenterish. Plan B good. Otherwise yawn, come back pub landlord all is forgiven Grin

I was more entertaining in the club last night Blush Wink

Curiousmama · 02/01/2011 11:04

It's all a blur Confused I know I got into a major rant with someone who wanted to petrol douse all gays and burn them! Shock and another who wanted to kill all muslims. Apart from that was a fun night Wink

Jellykat · 02/01/2011 13:13

Curious..Sometimes there's nothing like a good argument, especially with possible BNP members!..Hope you won, or at the very least sneezed in their pint when they weren't looking.. Wink

Curiousmama · 02/01/2011 13:16

Yes left them speechless Grin It's a village, I'm from a town. They can barely cope with the fact I go into t' club bar Wink

It was good. Bellowhead and Secret Sisters the best. Jools Holland is a boogie-woogie god - would never leave the room for his songs/playing. There have been stronger line-ups but it was still a good evening.

claig · 02/01/2011 15:55

I feel that not enough respect has been given to the 'Queen of Rockabilly', Wanda Jackson, on this thread. She is old now, but we shouldn't forget how she rocked the socks off all the other artists on Hootenanny when she was young.

Nevereatyellowsnow · 02/01/2011 16:25

Thanks for the link Claig, I'd never heard of her before and I can see she was amazing in her day but she was just dire on this year's one. I had a little chuckle at her wondering what the hell she was on!

claig · 02/01/2011 16:58

yes I agree with you. I have just watched her on iplayer. She is dire now. Her voice is no longer what it was. Jack White is paying tribute to her by producing an album for her and she has covered an Amy Winehouse track. But again her voice is not what it was. She was unique, she had a growl in her voice, and some of her early rocking numbers are wild.

To hear that classic growl in her voice, listen to her doing "Rock Your Baby" live

and there is also one of her best tracks, Mean Mean Man
