Eastenders Baby Death Storyline

Once again, no one can live happily ever after Sad

Ronnie's baby James, dies and she puts his body in Kat and Alfies son's crib, and steals their baby boy, Tommy.

Why oh why oh why do scriptwriters insist on portraying bereaved parents - mothers especially - as mad and deranged??? Maybe it's because they can't begin to imagine how awful the death of a child is, but really, whilst we are mad with grief, it is our own child that we want back, not someone else's stolen child. When are scriptwriters ever going to understand that?

Still, it'll be a riveting watch, no doubt.

morning ladies, off to read thread. hope yesterday didnt bring too many trolls out of the woodwork, being a non-school day and all...

confuddledDOTcom · 09/01/2011 11:33

Tiger again I'm wishing this was Facebook so I could "like" your comment!

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 11:39

Morning all. Smile

The OP in the latest AIBU EE thread seems to have vanished now that the blue touch paper has been lit.

Can I just say 'News Of The World'? Really?

My friend calls it 'Screws Of The World' as in they screw with the truth IYSWIM.

I'm sure it's just a cheap shot at MN and the like but it does make you feel Angry

MsKLo · 09/01/2011 11:43

Hello! I'm here!

MsKLo · 09/01/2011 11:45

Yes mouseface does feel a bit like a cheap shot

Sorry ladies for reading notw Blush

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 11:55

oh christ, same old, same old.

am really tempted to just start a thread in chat stating all the reasons that the story is offensive, so even if people only read the OP at least they have all the arguments.

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 12:30

I thought the same lissie.

Get it all in one OP so that all the points we are trying to make, are in one place.

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 13:00

hows this:

there is a line and sometimes you have to stand up and say "this isnt good enough" would you complain is a restaurant gave you food poisoning? or would you just never go again? of course, the majority of people would complain. they would do so to protect others. and because the restaurant should be held accountable.

soaps make a habit of painting infertile women and bereaved mothers as psychotic, baby stealing harpies. this isnt just about ronnie in EE, its about may the doctor in EE, claires friend in corrie, kevins ex wife in corrie, the scouse woman from hollyoaks and so mant others.

people have difficulty separating soaps from reality. look at all the actors and actresses who are abused and threatened because of their characters storyline. the actor who plays aaron in Emmerdale was beaten up when his character came out, sam womack has been subjected to abuse as "ronnie" while out with her children.

people DO say "it could happen, I saw that thing on tv where...." and they are referring to soaps.

soaps "pride" themselves on realism, thats why they research, and they quote that research when challenged. people think the current storyline has the backing of FSIDS. they backed the cot death story, not the swap. and fwiw, they havent educated one jot about SIDS, just told us that we shouldnt leave a baby alone, just incase....

saying that ronnie has "mental health issues" isnt an argument. so its ok to show someone as a deranged nutter who will swap her dead baby for a live one? doesnt that then open up whole new groups of people who could be offended by the story?

I am lucky enough to never have lost a child, but people are still awkward when I hold new babies. when I was at my lowest ebb, sil had a dd and wouldnt let me hold her or babysit alone. in case i "did something silly" backed up by mils "it happens, look at that woman on corrie". people DO think like this. dont believe us, fine. but there are so many stories like this on these boards.

If you dont think that the story is upsetting and/or do not want to complain/boycott, that is really up to you. we dont want to brainwash anyone. its not a cult. many people have used the "freedom of speech" argument about why the storyline should stand. the kicker with freedom of speech is that it goes both ways. you dont have to be outraged, just accept that we are.

posting to a group of bereaved mothers that they should "GET A GRIP!!!!" (always in capitals) and/or "GET OVER IT!!!!" (again with the capitals Hmm is not helpful.

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:16

Hang on, will read......

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:25

Few typos (says the queen of typosWink) but yes, great.

Have you looked at dee's, Caz's and MrsDeVere's posts? Maybe combine all points made here and maybe link to tarbra's post on the other thread?

Have you read that lissie Sad

Just an idea re combining all points made by others, not trying to tell you what to do Smile

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 13:28

i read it, made me cry.

thats a good idea. Its just so frustrating to have to keep batting away the same arguments as to why we shouldnt feel this way.

deemented · 09/01/2011 13:33

Oh i don't know. It's a good post, but many people aren't going to actually take it in. They see what they want and hear what they want. They don't want to be dissuaded. They want to think they have the highground so they can feel supieror when they tell us 'It's not real you know, it's only a soap'

OP posts:
MsKLo · 09/01/2011 13:36

I think you should email CM with that too x

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 13:36

true dee Sad

btw, how is everyone today?

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:40

Right.

EE omnibus is on. No warning about the programme's content at all. No 'some viewers may find the scenes disturbing'

Nothing.

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:41

I'm not watching it BTW, just wanted to see if they out a warning out. Sad

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 13:42

mouse, so much for responsible broadcasting!

MsKLo · 09/01/2011 13:48

I dont watch anymore either but I have heard Jessie wallace's performance is very accurate?

What a shame they sensationalised this story by baby swapping and didn't concentrate on the proper story

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:48

'put'

Tired now.

lissie - TBH I think it's appalling of them not to warn people, especially as it's aired at 1.35pm.

They just don't give a shit do they?

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 13:50

MsKLo - yes, from what I have read and heard about Jessie Wallace, she has done a fantastic job.

Good on her Smile

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 14:06

anyone else feel like saying "i give up"

Mouseface · 09/01/2011 14:10

Nope, lissie. If anything I think we should ignore those who have differing opinions from us, which is their right, and keep fighting our corner. Smile

Will one of you slap me please? I can't stop wibbling today. I was all happy before and now I'm not.

Bit weepy.

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 14:13
Mouseface · 09/01/2011 14:23

OracleInaCoracle · 09/01/2011 14:25
