Eastenders Baby Death Storyline

Once again, no one can live happily ever after Sad

Ronnie's baby James, dies and she puts his body in Kat and Alfies son's crib, and steals their baby boy, Tommy.

Why oh why oh why do scriptwriters insist on portraying bereaved parents - mothers especially - as mad and deranged??? Maybe it's because they can't begin to imagine how awful the death of a child is, but really, whilst we are mad with grief, it is our own child that we want back, not someone else's stolen child. When are scriptwriters ever going to understand that?

Still, it'll be a riveting watch, no doubt.

can i come back here please, ive only been back on 5 mins and I have a headache!

Mouseface · 07/01/2011 22:28

Stay here lissie

I can't stand the other thread anymore. Smile

Fooffy - I felt the same when I read it, talking from a script maybe??

tulpe · 07/01/2011 22:30

Have not read this thread in great detail but wanted to add my name to the list of those distressed by the nonsense of the baby snatching element of this storyline.

Having said that, I did watch tonight episode. I don't want to go in to my own story but the 8th anniversary of my baby girl's death was 5 days ago. I have been swallowing down my grief for days. Watching Jessie Wallace portray the numb shock and then knee buckling grief was actually very cathartic for me. I sobbed and sobbed. It was a very real and accurate portrayal of a mothers grief. I hope that as EE are continuing with this regardless, that at least small elements of the story may help others.

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 22:30

did anyone see this? her agent said that her resignation was unrelated, but thats not the impression i get.

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 07/01/2011 22:34

YY stay away from the other thread.

I honestly think the whole resignation thing is to falsely assuage the complaining people.

If she had really had such doubts and turmoil last November, you can guarantee it would have been leaked an in one of those soap mags (and therefore tabloids)a lot earlier.

Big coincidence, and funnily enough the "door" is being left open.

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 22:37

theman, i never really got the impression that she was happy about it. she didnt gush about how groundbreakin it was in any interviews. just kept saying "i hope we dont upset too many people" apparently EE wanted it to run for at least 2y and she quit when she got the script and couldnt be talked down.

complaints at 8,400

Mouseface · 07/01/2011 22:39

TheMan - I said yesterday (not showing off) that they released the story of SW leaving as a pacifier.

Nothing more, nothing less.

She quit in November last year but is bound to a six month notice period.

ditto the quick wrap up.

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 07/01/2011 22:46

Oooh get you two Grin

Yes you were both completely right! 8400! Didn't someone say you x that by ten?

By that admission, I think on this occasion they have completely underestimated the offence and need to step up their game to make things right (or rather less offensive).

Mouseface · 07/01/2011 22:52

TheMan - promise you'll stick around after this, I think we are all very like minded. Grin

I am a huge fan of short and sweet, to the point, no waffle etc....

Not seen you on MN before, but then again, I usually stay where I feel safe. Smile

Sorry, not being a bitch.

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 22:54

theman, totally agree. I really think that when it was first suggested they got really excited thinking about the "grittiness" and potential for awards.

then when complaints started they went... "oh fuck"

I'd imagine kirkwood is making sure his contract is watertight and union membership is paid up right now.

PotPourri · 07/01/2011 22:55

So how many complaints did big brother get with the jade goody thing get (someone refered to this on the what happens next thread?)

BTW, that one is my first thread I've started that has hit the hot topics list - hmmmmmm, not exactly one to treasure - ah well

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 22:58

40000

confuddledDOTcom · 07/01/2011 22:59

Yes, that was me. The BBC go by the theory that only 10% of people complain so will multiply the complaints.

I'm assuming that's the people who say they'll complain and never do (like me usually Blush) rather than the people who don't like it but aren't going to bother.

Mouseface · 07/01/2011 23:03

Seriously, where do we go from here??

What else can we do?

We're not watching it, we are complaining, how do we take this forward?

EvilTwins · 07/01/2011 23:08

Ofcom got 64,996 complaints about Big Brother. Channel 4 did not pull the programme.

EvilTwins · 07/01/2011 23:09

Going by confuddled's theory, that's a hell of a lot of complaints (Big Brother, that is)

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 23:10

mouseface, i really dont know. they have said that they will wrap it up early, and we have no proof to the contrary.

what i do know, is that I have learnt so much these last few days and spoken to some of the bravest, most wonderful people, i feel very priviliged to be in the same corner as you all x

Mouseface · 07/01/2011 23:16

Do you know what? Me too lissie

Humbled by the shared stories on here, even though we lost three gorgeous boys before we met them, I am humbled by the strength of the people on here who fight day after day to get their point across.

MN is a wonderful place to be. Smile

Off to bed, to recharge, ready for another day tomorrow.

Showered of course! Wink

Take care ladies and gents, be gentle with your souls xx

OracleInaCoracle · 07/01/2011 23:17

absolutely, sleep well sweet x

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 07/01/2011 23:19

Mouse, thank you Smile I have been around in many guises for a few years. Perhaps I'll stick in this one for a while?

I am short and to the point (I think that's why I move on usually!) Sometimes it doesn't translate too well. Where do you usually appear? Why are you being a bitch?

I don't honestly think things will change. I believe that "normal" people are too stuck in their safety zones and that EE allow them this and indeed bank on this.

That's why the whole storyline is so "entertaining", the majority of the public don't feel that the topic applies to them and hate bereaved mothers making them feel "guilty" for enjoying the storyline.

TheManWhoSoldtheWorld · 07/01/2011 23:22

Oh, sorry, to continue my point, the storyline will be spun out until May when Sam Womack leaves.

PotPourri · 07/01/2011 23:29

hear hear lissielou - this process has been a big learning experience for me. And has also shown me once again the value of Mumsnet

gregssausageroll · 08/01/2011 08:17

Reports on digital spy this morning say it the most complained about soap ever - the previous being Danielle's death which attracted 7,000 complaints.

Press are continuing to state that Eastenders are trying to portray cot death and raise awareness. They simply don't get it.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 08/01/2011 08:27

What's this about?

Last night BBC chiefs reeling from the furious backlash asked campaign group Mumsnet to help with storylines.
