FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

Entertainment

QI

10:00pm - 10:30pm

BBC2 London & South East

VIDEO Plus+: 33374
Subtitled, Widescreen

1/12

The initials in the title stand for Quite Interesting (the whole thrust of this comedic quiz show is that it's better to be amusing than academic), but it could also stand for Quirkily Idiosyncratic. Or Quick-witted Incomparability. Without doubt it's the funniest panel show on TV. The urbane and lovable Stephen Fry is the QI-meister, whose endearing tendency to call his guests "dear" is offset by his astonishing wit and clever wordplay, while the panellists this week are Alan Davies, Bill Bailey, Rich Hall and Rob Brydon, all of whom will have you in paroxysms of laughter. The questions are astoundingly obscure, but then their purpose is really to set up a joke rather than to be seriously answered.

pesme, I do enjoy it, but I also know what you mean. I do find Stephen Fry especially wears his learning very HEAVILY. And all the silly buzzer sounds are a bit upper-Removishly juvenile.
I always watch it though in the hope of being able to blow kisses at the gorgeous Bill Bailey or Andy Hamilton.
Chief shocker last night was being forced to accept that the monstrous gurning Rory McGrath is really very clever indeed

pesme · 15/10/2005 11:38

thanks marina, was starting to think was just a humourless freak. i think it was the buzzer thing that really got to me last night. i really like all these people individually. stephen fry was a genius in the eighties and ninties but now has become the sort of person he used to take the p*ss out off.

yoyo · 15/10/2005 11:38

MartianBishop (you are HMB aren't you?). That made me laugh so much - I am about to email it to all the chemists I know! I sounded sad for being a QI fan but laughing aloud at the PT really makes me an official saddo.

Marina - Rory is rather a clever cloggs isn't he? How do people retain all this info?

Marina · 15/10/2005 14:10

Possibly by having no room in their heads for functional relationships with other humans, or indeed any scrap of humility, yoyo!
I think Jeeves and Wooster compared to the recent Twinings tea ads sums up my "then and now" feelings about Mr Fry pesme!

Prufrock · 15/10/2005 14:23

I was very suspicious of Rory last night- especialy given that he was found to be bribing one of the production assistants on "They think it's all over" to give him the answers.

I do love it - it is one of the few programs taht can make me laugh out loud, but know what you mean Marina about it sometimes veering rather terribly into the sort of self conciously clever humourousness beloved of sixth formers the world over.

Marina · 15/10/2005 14:25

Prufrock! I just knew the man was a bounder.

Prufrock · 15/10/2005 22:37

Marina - in anunbelievable co-incidence, dh found himself alone in a carriage with Mr McGrath on the train back from football today. (dh was v. happy as chelsea had won 5-1, RM not so happy as Arsenal suppporter)

He actually point blank asked him whether he had cheated - apparently RM was amused and denied it, saying he was just lucky to getquestions on a couple of subjects which he happened to know lots about. In next weeks (or last nights if you watch on BBC4) he comes 2nd

JoolsToo · 16/10/2005 13:31

I don't care if he does cheat - who's he cheating?

It's funny that's all

Love it! Only just discovered it though. Am hoping DH has got me the DVD game for Christmas - have dropped enough hints!

Some of the things we think we know to be true but aren't are shocking though, aren't they? Alan Davies cracks me up - he tends to say what I was thinking when his long-held beliefs are shattered. Bless
